Campgrounds and RV parks near Rutledge, TN

Cherokee Lake is the main draw. Panther Creek State Park offers a swim beach, more than 28 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and a professional-level disc golf course. Cherokee Dam Campground has a large public boat ramp, day-use swim area, and a picnic pavilion adjacent to the sites. Fishing on Cherokee Reservoir produces bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, bream, and rockfish year-round. Paddlers use the calmer coves along the north shore near Rutledge. For a day off the water, Dollywood, Pigeon Forge, and the Gatlinburg entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park are all within about an hour by RV or tow vehicle. Historic downtown Jefferson City and Morristown add small-town dining and grocery stops.

The main camping window runs March 15 through November 15, which matches TVA's operating season for Cherokee Dam Campground. Tennessee State Parks, including Panther Creek, keep their campground open year round, though the camp store operates seasonally from mid-April through mid-October. Spring brings wildflowers, cool nights, and consistent rain, with March typically the wettest month of the year. Summer is the peak booking window, with warm lake temperatures, long daylight, and heavy weekend demand at every lakefront park. Expect high humidity in July and August, along with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Fall is the quieter shoulder season and often the most comfortable for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and lower rainfall than spring. Winter camping is limited: TVA campgrounds close between November 15 and March 15, and non-hookup sites can be tricky when temperatures drop below freezing, though Panther Creek stays open year round for hardier campers.

Public campgrounds in this area are well maintained and family friendly. Cherokee Dam Campground has 44 sites, most with electric and water hookups, a handful of primitive sites, paved entry roads with mostly level gravel pads, picnic table and fire pit at each site, and a bathhouse with warm showers and flush toilets. Panther Creek offers 50 sites with water and 20/30/50-amp electric, eight of them with sewer, two bathhouses, a year-round laundromat, a dump station, and campground Wi-Fi. Private parks tend to be smaller and simpler. Dumplin Valley RV, for example, is a quiet farm-based park geared to travelers passing through on I-40. Bring heat-treated or park-sourced firewood: Tennessee State Parks and TVA both restrict outside firewood to limit invasive pests.
