Camping near Spurgeon, Tennessee
Spurgeon is a census-designated place in northeast Tennessee, straddling Sullivan and Washington counties at roughly 1,414 feet of elevation. It sits inside the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol combined statistical area, commonly known as the Tri-Cities region, which puts RV travelers within a short drive of Boone Lake, South Holston Lake, and the foothills of the southern Appalachians.
The closest full-service public campground is Warriors' Path State Park, located along the shores of Patrick Henry Reservoir on the Holston River in Kingsport, with a Main Campground, Moody Bluff Campground, and Cedar Ridge Hammock Campground. Private options in the surrounding Tri-Cities corridor include Bristol / Kingsport KOA Holiday, Rocky Top Campground and RV Park, Appalachian Caverns Campground, and Lakeview RV Resort. Together they cover the range from state-park hookup loops to full-amenity resort sites with pools and cabins.
Spurgeon works well as a base for RV renters heading to Bristol Motor Speedway events, hiking day trips into the Cherokee National Forest, or lake-focused family stays. Interstate 26 and Interstate 81 both pass within a short drive, keeping arrivals and grocery runs straightforward.
Things to do near Spurgeon
Warriors' Path State Park offers boating, fishing, hiking, birding, golfing, mountain biking, paddling, and disc golf, plus lake swimming and a seasonal pool. Appalachian Caverns Campground offers guided cave tours on-site, a popular rainy-day option for families traveling with kids.
Day trips reach Bristol Motor Speedway, downtown Kingsport's Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium, and the historic district in Jonesborough. Anglers target smallmouth and largemouth bass on Boone Lake, South Holston Lake, and the tailwaters of the South Holston River, which is a nationally known trout fishery.
For hiking, the Cherokee National Forest and Roan Mountain State Park are both within roughly an hour's drive, offering ridge-line views, waterfalls, and summer rhododendron blooms.

The region has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cold winters, with rainfall fairly spread throughout the year, summer thunderstorms and heavy downpours, and occasional snowfall in the colder months. Shoulder seasons tend to be the sweet spot for RV travel: April to mid-June and September to October deliver mild temperatures and lower humidity.
Summer is peak season. Family sites at Warriors' Path State Park and the Bristol / Kingsport KOA Holiday fill quickly around Independence Day, Bristol Motor Speedway race weekends, and school breaks, so booking several weeks out is prudent. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August, and humidity climbs noticeably from July into August.
Fall brings hardwood color across the Appalachians, typically peaking mid to late October at higher elevations and slightly later around the Tri-Cities. Winter camping is possible but limited: camping is available year-round at Warriors' Path across three campgrounds: Main, Moody Bluff, and Cedar Ridge Hammock, while some private parks operate with reduced services and freeze-related water shutoffs are possible during cold snaps.
How to book campgrounds near Spurgeon
Warriors' Path State Park is operated by Tennessee State Parks and takes reservations through the official Tennessee State Parks reservation system, either online or by phone. Available nights can be viewed up to 12 months ahead, and popular weekends, especially those tied to Bristol race dates, book out early.
Bristol / Kingsport KOA Holiday can be booked directly through the KOA website or app, which handles site selection, pull-throughs, and cabin add-ons. Rocky Top Campground and RV Park, Appalachian Caverns Campground, and Lakeview RV Resort each take reservations through their own websites or by phone.
For race weekends at Bristol Motor Speedway, plan to reserve many months ahead. Minimum-stay requirements and non-refundable deposits are common during high-demand dates, so review each park's cancellation policy before confirming.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in the area range from wooded state-park pads with water and electric to full-hookup resort sites with 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, and cable. The Main Campground at Warriors' Path features sites for tents and RVs with water and electric hookups, while Moody Bluff Campground offers deluxe sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups, including pull-through options for larger RVs.
Cell service is generally reliable across the Tri-Cities corridor on all major U.S. carriers, though signal thins on backroads toward the Cherokee National Forest. Grocery, propane, and RV supply stops are easy to reach in Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol.
Black bears are present in the wider region, so food, trash, and pet food should be stored inside the RV overnight. Summer nights bring mosquitoes near the lakes, and ticks are active from spring through fall, so pack repellent and check pets after hikes.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Spurgeon,TennesseeWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Spurgeon, Tennessee?

Tennessee does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. To book on RVezy, the approved driver generally needs to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a grace-period window after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund of the rental amount. After that, your refund depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. You'll see the exact cancellation terms applied to your booking before you pay, and the RVezy support team is available to help if plans change. Pro tip: book early for popular weekends like the Appalachian Fair in late August, when Tri-Cities inventory tightens fast.

Yes, RV delivery in Spurgeon is offered by many local hosts, and it's a game-changer for a first time renting an RV. Popular delivery destinations include TVA's Observation Knob Park on Boone Lake (a short drive away), Rocky Top Campground in Blountville, and Cherokee Adventures near the Nolichucky River. Filter listings by Delivery to see hosts offering this option. Pro tip: delivery within 25 miles is often a flat fee, with per-mile pricing beyond that.

tnstateparks.com/parks/warriors-pathWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Spurgeon?
The shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for RV camping in Spurgeon: late April through early June and mid-September through late October. Spring brings mild 65 to 78 degree days with redbuds and dogwoods blooming around Boone Lake, while fall delivers crisp 50 to 70 degree weather and excellent leaf-peeping on the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway, typically peaking in mid to late October. Summers are warm and humid (mid-80s) with afternoon thunderstorms, and winters are mild but variable (30s to 50s), with occasional ice on higher mountain roads. Pro tip: time your trip for the first or second weekend of October, when the Cherokee National Forest hardwoods are usually at peak color and campground reservations are easier than peak summer.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Spurgeon?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Spurgeon is genuinely doable, and the area suits beginners. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, holding tanks, hookups, and driving tips, so you're never figuring it out alone. Class C motorhomes and smaller travel trailers (under 25 feet) are the easiest to handle, and the roads around Spurgeon (State Route 36, I-26, US-11E) are wide and well-maintained. For your very first drive, head to Boone Lake or Warriors' Path State Park, both under 20 miles away. Pro tip: ask your host if delivery is available. Skipping the first drive entirely is the ultimate beginner hack.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, so if you get a flat on I-26, run into battery trouble at Observation Knob Park, or have a slide-out hiccup in the Smokies, one phone call gets help dispatched. The roadside team can coordinate tows, tire changes, jump starts, and lockout service, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Your host is also typically reachable by message for quick how-to questions. Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number in your phone before leaving the host's driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate for faster service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Spurgeon RV rental on a multi-state road trip?
Absolutely, an RV road trip from Spurgeon is one of the best ways to explore the Southeast. You're within easy reach of three states: Virginia (Bristol is about 25 miles north), North Carolina (Asheville is about 65 miles south), and Kentucky (Cumberland Gap is about 90 miles west). Most hosts welcome interstate travel within the U.S., and your booking's protection plan travels with you across U.S. state lines. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, and Canadian trips require host approval in advance. A popular multi-state loop is Spurgeon to Asheville to Great Smoky Mountains to Pigeon Forge (roughly 350 miles round trip). Pro tip: confirm your route with the host through RVezy messaging before booking longer interstate trips.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on my Spurgeon RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's predictable. Gas prices in the Tri-Cities region typically run slightly below the national average, with stations in Kingsport and Johnson City often offering competitive rates. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, and 12 to 18 mpg for campervans or travel trailers (depending on tow vehicle). A 300-mile loop to Asheville and back in a Class C will likely use 25 to 30 gallons. Pro tip: use a fuel-price app and fill up in Gray or Boones Creek before heading into the Smokies, where mountain-town prices climb noticeably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Spurgeon RV trip?
For the best campsites near Spurgeon, plan ahead. Tennessee State Parks (including Warriors' Path) accept bookings up to 12 months in advance through tnstateparks.com, and Cherokee National Forest sites are booked through recreation.gov. TVA recreation areas around Boone Lake fill quickly for prime summer weekends. For shoulder-season trips or weeknights, 2 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually enough. Private parks like Rocky Top Campground are often more flexible and can take same-week bookings. Pro tip: if a holiday weekend is full, set up alerts on recreation.gov. Cancellations open up daily in the two weeks before a trip.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Spurgeon and the Tri-Cities?
Driving conditions around Spurgeon are very RV-friendly. State Route 36, I-26, and I-81 are wide, well-maintained, and handle plenty of RV traffic year-round. The biggest things to watch are the rolling hills (use lower gears on long descents toward Erwin), summer afternoon thunderstorms, and occasional winter ice on higher mountain roads. Avoid narrow forest backroads in the Cherokee National Forest in a larger Class A. Tri-Cities Regional Airport is just a few miles from Spurgeon, so the area is easy to reach. Pro tip: if you're heading to Asheville on I-26 through Sams Gap, check Tennessee's SmartWay traveler information before leaving. The grade can be tricky in high winds.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Spurgeon?

TVA's Observation Knob Park on Boone Lake offers 50/30-amp electric, water, and a dump station, while Warriors' Path State Park in Kingsport has water/electric sites and a centralized dump. Rocky Top Campground in Blountville is one of the few with full hookups (sewer at the site) plus Wi-Fi and a pool. For dump and potable water fills, Pilot and Flying J truck stops along I-81 are reliable options. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter. East Tennessee campgrounds use a mix of pedestals and you'll want both ready.

Expect queen or king beds, a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning, propane furnace, and dinette seating that often converts to extra sleeping. Class C and Class A models include seatbelted travel seats, generators for off-grid power, and many have TVs with HDMI or streaming setups. Cell service can be spotty in Cherokee National Forest, so download shows ahead. Campervan rental Spurgeon listings are smaller and cozier, ideal for couples. Pro tip: check the listing's bed configuration carefully if you're planning a family RV trip Spurgeon with kids who need their own bunks.

Hosts in the Spurgeon area offer add-ons that make your trip easier and more fun. Common options include camping chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour), bike racks, kayak racks, propane refills, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Many hosts also offer pickup or dropoff flexibility near Tri-Cities Regional Airport, which is a short drive from Spurgeon and useful if you're flying in. Mileage policies vary, with most listings including a set number of free miles per night and unlimited mileage packages available for longer Appalachian trips. Pro tip: bundling add-ons at booking is almost always cheaper than adding them at pickup, and it lets the host pre-stage everything before you arrive.
flytricities.com/How do payment and the security deposit work for RV rental in Tennessee?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you rent an RV in Spurgeon, TN through RVezy, you pay the full booking total (rental, fees, taxes, protection) directly through the platform with a credit or debit card. No cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after dropoff as long as the RV comes back in the agreed condition with no excess mileage or generator overage. Pro tip: take a 60-second video walkaround at pickup and another at dropoff. It's the single best habit for protecting your deposit on any RV rental Tennessee trip.
