Campgrounds and RV parks near St. Joseph, TN

Shoal Creek is the defining outdoor feature of the area, and paddling is a straightforward day activity. Shoal Creek Canoe Run in nearby Iron City rents canoes and kayaks along Shoal Creek, with a few minor rapids on the upper run but overall Class 1 water. Fishing on the creek turns up small- and large-mouth bass, black perch, and catfish. At David Crockett State Park, families can combine short trails with lake time. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, biking, paddling and birding during their stay. A paved bike path and a small lake keep younger kids busy without a long drive. For a bigger water trip, Joe Wheeler State Park on Wheeler Lake adds boat ramps, a marina, and longer trail systems. The resort features a full-service marina with permanent and overnight docking slips, plus an 18-hole golf course and lakeside cottages.

The camping season in this part of Tennessee runs long, but not every campground is open year-round. At David Crockett State Park, Campground 1 sits along Shoal Creek and is open March 1 through November 3, while Campground 2 is open year-round. RV travelers planning a winter or early-spring trip should target Campground 2 or a private park with heated bathhouses. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows. Daytime highs move into the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is lower than midsummer, and fall color along Shoal Creek peaks in late October. The area averages about 136 days a year of comfortable weather, and the best time to visit is April to May and mid September to October. Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, and it is peak family-camping season, so sites at state parks book out well ahead of holiday weekends. Winter is mild by northern standards but wet. December brings wetter days averaging 158 mm of precipitation, spread over 12 rainy days. Flash flooding on Shoal Creek can affect low-lying sites and boat access after heavy rain.

Expect a mix of state-park camping and small private operations. State-park sites near St. Joseph tend to be paved with water and electric hookups. Campground 2 at David Crockett features paved campsites, each equipped with electric and water hook-ups. Full sewer hookups are more common at the Alabama resort parks. Joe Wheeler has 116 total campsites, 110 with full hookups for water, electricity, and sewer, sites accommodate any size camping unit as well as tents, and bathhouses are located in each campground section. Private options closer to St. Joseph lean rustic. Primitive camping is available at Shoal Creek Canoe Run, with a portable restroom in the campground and bathrooms inside the store, but no showers. Plan for self-contained RV use and dumping elsewhere. Cell service is generally workable but not universal in the creek valleys, and Shoal Creek can rise quickly in storms, so keep an eye on weather when parked near the water.
