Campgrounds near Strawberry Plains, Tennessee
Strawberry Plains sits in Jefferson and Knox counties in East Tennessee, roughly 15 miles east of downtown Knoxville along the I-40 corridor and within a short drive of the Great Smoky Mountains. The area works well as a base for RV travelers: it puts Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Douglas Lake, and Cherokee Lake within easy reach without putting an RV in the heart of tourist traffic.
Lodging options range from full-hookup commercial resorts to public Tennessee Valley Authority sites on the French Broad River. Dumplin Valley RV and Two Rivers Landing RV Resort cover the resort end, with paved pads, landscaped sites, and on-site amenities. Douglas Tailwater Campground is the closest TVA-managed option, sitting on the river just below Douglas Dam. Mountain Lake Ranch Christian Retreat and Riverside RV Park and Resort round out the nearby choices for families and longer stays. Most parks accommodate larger rigs, but site length and hookup type vary, so checking the specific site map before booking matters.
Things to do near Strawberry Plains
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the headline draw, with the Sugarlands and Oconaluftee visitor centers, Cades Cove, and Newfound Gap Road all reachable as day trips. Closer to camp, Douglas Lake offers boating, bass fishing, and swimming, and the tailwater stretch of the French Broad River below Douglas Dam is popular for trout fishing and birdwatching. Seven Islands State Birding Park, located in Kodak just south of Strawberry Plains, has hiking and paddling on the French Broad. Families typically split time between the park and the Pigeon Forge corridor, which includes Dollywood, dinner shows, and go-kart tracks. Sevierville and Knoxville add aquariums, museums, and grocery and supply stops within a short drive.

East Tennessee has four distinct seasons, and the camping calendar reflects that. Spring brings wildflowers in the Smokies and the heaviest rainfall of the year, with March typically the wettest month. It is also the start of the public-campground season: Douglas Tailwater Campground opens around mid-March and closes in mid-November, so winter trips need to target private parks that stay open year-round.
Summer is the busiest stretch. June through August sees daytime highs in the upper 80s, warm river temperatures, and peak demand at Smokies-area campgrounds, especially around July 4th. Reservations for riverfront and full-hookup sites tend to fill weeks or months in advance. Fall is the local favorite: cooler nights, lighter rainfall in September and October, and peak leaf color in mid- to late October across the Smokies. Winters are mild by national standards but include freeze nights, occasional snow, and a much shorter list of open campgrounds.

How to book campgrounds near Strawberry Plains
Booking channels differ by operator. Two Rivers Landing RV Resort takes reservations through its own website and Campspot, with credit-card holds and cancellation windows that tighten as check-in approaches. Dumplin Valley RV, Mountain Lake Ranch Christian Retreat, and Riverside RV Park and Resort generally accept reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Douglas Tailwater Campground is managed for TVA by Vista Recreation, with sites bookable through the Go Camp Tennessee online system; a two-night minimum applies, and the season runs roughly March 15 through November 15. For peak summer weekends and fall color in October, book several months out for riverfront and full-hookup sites. Midweek and shoulder-season trips typically have more flexibility.
What to expect when you arrive
Most Strawberry Plains-area parks have paved or gravel pads, 30/50-amp electric, and water hookups, with sewer at full-hookup resorts and a central dump station at TVA sites. Cell coverage is generally workable on major carriers, though it weakens in the river bottoms and once you enter the national park. Check-in is typically early afternoon, and quiet hours are enforced at most resorts. Sites along the French Broad and Douglas tailwaters can be slightly unlevel, so leveling blocks are useful. Black bears are present throughout the region, so food, trash, and grills should be secured overnight. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall near the water, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.

How much does an RV rental in Strawberry Plains cost?
An RV rental in Strawberry Plains, TN is one of the more affordable ways to experience the Great Smoky Mountains region. Travel trailers typically start around $70-$120 per night, Class C motorhomes average $150-$200 per night, and Class B campervans fall in between. Larger Class A motorhomes can run $185+ nightly during peak season. Many local hosts on RVezy offer multi-night discounts of 10-20% for trips of a week or more, so a longer Smokies trip can lower your nightly rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Strawberry%20Plains,%20TennesseeWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Strawberry Plains, TN?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Strawberry Plains, even for big Class A motorhomes. Tennessee does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use recreational vehicles, so your everyday license works for travel trailers, fifth wheels, campervans, and motorhomes alike. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform when you book. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. That's it, you're cleared to head toward the Smokies.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Strawberry Plains protected if something goes wrong?
Every RVezy booking in Strawberry Plains, TN includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Smoky Mountain foothills with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most accidental damage to the vehicle, and you select your coverage level during the booking process (not the host). While this isn't traditional auto insurance, it offers meaningful financial protection if a mishap happens on the road or at the campground. Pair that with around-the-clock roadside help for flat tires, lockouts, or jump-starts, and your Tennessee RV trip is set up for smooth travel. Choose the protection tier that matches your comfort level at checkout.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Strawberry Plains RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every RV rental in Strawberry Plains, TN, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can change plans without stress. Refund amounts after that window depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. The full, current cancellation policy is available on the RVezy website and Help Center before you confirm your booking. If a host cancels on you, RVezy provides a refund or travel credit. Book with confidence, then finalize your Smokies itinerary as your dates get closer.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Strawberry Plains?
Yes, your dog is welcome on plenty of trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see pet-friendly RV rental options in Strawberry Plains, TN, and message the host to confirm any pet fees or rules. The region is great for dogs: Seven Islands State Birding Park (just minutes from Strawberry Plains) has leashed-dog trails along the French Broad River, and nearby Tennessee State Parks welcome leashed pets too. Note that Great Smoky Mountains National Park restricts pets on most trails (only the Gatlinburg Trail and Oconaluftee River Trail allow dogs), so plan dog hikes in Tennessee State Parks or Cherokee National Forest instead. Bring a leash and plenty of water.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Strawberry Plains?
Yes, RV delivery in Strawberry Plains is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig through the foothills. Many local hosts will deliver the motorhome or travel trailer directly to your campsite at places like Anchor Down RV Resort in Dandridge or Panther Creek State Park in Morristown, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. You just show up with your bags. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so a nearby Dandridge or Sevierville drop-off is often cheaper than a Pigeon Forge run. Message hosts directly from their listing to confirm pricing and availability.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Strawberry%20Plains,%20TennesseeHow far can I travel from Strawberry Plains on an RV trip?
From your Strawberry Plains RV trip basecamp, Gatlinburg and the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park are about 35 miles south (around 45 minutes), Pigeon Forge and Dollywood sit roughly 30 miles away, Cherokee, NC (the park's south entrance) is about 75 miles, Asheville, NC is around 110 miles east on I-40, and Nashville is roughly 200 miles west. Each host sets a daily mileage allowance (often 100-150 miles per day) with options to add miles. If you're planning a long RV road trip from Strawberry Plains, filter listings for higher mileage caps or RV rental with unlimited mileage and confirm specifics with the host before booking.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Strawberry Plains, TN?
You have plenty of choices. Top campgrounds near Strawberry Plains include Anchor Down RV Resort in Dandridge (a lakefront resort on Douglas Lake), Panther Creek State Park in Morristown (water/electric hookups and Cherokee Lake views), and Cove Lake State Park a bit farther north. For RV camping in Strawberry Plains that feels closer to the national park, look at Greenbrier Campground or Riverside RV Park and Resort in Sevierville. Lakefront sites at Anchor Down book up many months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve as early as possible.
tnstateparks.com/parks/panther-creekWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Strawberry Plains?
Strawberry Plains is enjoyable nearly year-round, but the sweet spots are April through early June and mid-September through early November. Spring brings wildflower blooms in the Smokies with highs in the 60s-70s degrees F, and fall delivers strong leaf color (peak is usually mid-to-late October) with crisp 50s-70s degrees F days. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid, with highs near the upper 80s and afternoon thunderstorms, but campgrounds are lively. Winter is mild compared to northern states (January highs around 45 degrees F, lows near 29 degrees F) and you'll find lower rates plus quiet trails. Book by February if you want a fall foliage trip, as October weekends sell out fastest.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you're not alone. Many guests are first time renting an RV, and every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that covers driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump process. If driving still feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class B campervan or travel trailer, or book delivery so the RV is parked and set up before you arrive. Around Strawberry Plains, the terrain is rolling foothills with manageable grades on I-40 and Highway 11E, much friendlier than mountain switchbacks. Save your host's number, take it slow on your first pull-out, and you'll feel confident by day two.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007553-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside issue?
Every RVezy booking in Strawberry Plains, TN includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away day or night. Whether it's a flat tire on I-40, a dead battery at a campground, or a lockout at the trailhead, dispatch will coordinate the right service. Your host is also reachable for quick troubleshooting (often a five-minute fix), and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Save both numbers in your phone at pickup. For non-emergencies like a finicky water pump, a quick video call with your host usually solves it on the spot.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Strawberry Plains?
Strawberry Plains is a great launchpad. A classic RV road trip from Strawberry Plains is the Smokies Loop: head south to Gatlinburg, drive Newfound Gap Road over the crest to Cherokee, NC (about 35 miles of mountain views), and return via the Foothills Parkway. Another favorite is the Cherokee Lake/Douglas Lake circuit through Dandridge and Jefferson City for lake-side camping. For longer hauls, Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway are about 2 hours east, Chattanooga is 2.5 hours south, and Nashville is 3 hours west. Cross-country US road trips are possible with your host's approval on mileage.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/newfound-gap-road.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Strawberry Plains RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than you might think. Most motorhomes near Strawberry Plains average 8-12 miles per gallon (MPG), and Class B campervans can reach 16-20 MPG. Tennessee gas prices tend to run below the national average, and you'll find Pilot, Love's, and TA truck stops along I-40 with high-clearance pumps suitable for big rigs. For a typical 4-day Smokies loop covering about 250 miles, plan on roughly $90-$160 in fuel for a Class C, depending on current prices. Fill up in Strawberry Plains or Sevierville before heading into Gatlinburg or the national park, where stations are scarcer and pricier.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Strawberry Plains?
Book early for stress-free options. For Great Smoky Mountains National Park campgrounds (Cades Cove, Elkmont, Smokemont), reservations open six months ahead on Recreation.gov and summer/fall weekends fill within hours. Tennessee State Parks like Panther Creek and Cove Lake can also book up 4-6 months out for prime weekends through the TN State Parks reservation portal. Private resorts like Anchor Down RV Resort can require even longer lead times for lakefront sites. If you're flexible, midweek arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) often have last-minute openings. October fall-color weekends are the hardest dates in the region, so target those by February or March.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like around Strawberry Plains?
Driving here is manageable. Strawberry Plains sits on I-40 about 15 miles east of Knoxville, with wide interstate lanes, gentle grades, and easy RV-friendly access to Sevierville, Gatlinburg, and the Smokies. Watch for two things: rush-hour congestion on I-40 near Knoxville (7-9am and 4-6pm) and steep, winding sections on Newfound Gap Road inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where you'll want low gear on descents. Winter occasionally brings ice on bridges and overpasses, so check TDOT SmartWay before heading out December through February. Otherwise, the rolling Tennessee Valley terrain is one of the friendlier RV driving regions in the Southeast.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat amenities do campgrounds near Strawberry Plains offer?
You'll find what you need close by. Most RV parks near Strawberry Plains, TN offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Anchor Down RV Resort features fire pits and lake access, and Tennessee State Parks like Panther Creek provide water/electric sites plus modern bathhouses. For dump stations and fresh-water fills outside a campground, look for Escapees Raccoon Valley RV Park in Heiskell or the Clinton/Knoxville North KOA. Top off fresh water before heading into the national park, as in-park campgrounds have limited hookups.
tnstateparks.com/parks/panther-creekWhat's included inside an RV rental in Strawberry Plains?
More than you might expect. A typical motorhome rental in Strawberry Plains comes fully equipped: queen or king bed(s), convertible dinette and sofa sleepers, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many rentals include linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and a leveling kit, and some offer generators for off-grid stays plus TV/Wi-Fi hotspots. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar layouts minus the driving cab. Each listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's included, so check the amenities list and message your host for anything specific like a child car seat anchor or extra bedding.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Strawberry%20Plains,%20TennesseeWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Strawberry Plains include generators, bike racks, kayak/SUP carriers, camping kits (chairs, table, grill), linens and towels, propane refills, and pre-stocked groceries. Mileage policies vary by host (commonly 100-150 free miles per day, with extra miles billed at a per-mile rate set by the host), and many hosts offer flat-rate or unlimited mileage upgrades for longer trips. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Strawberry Plains, but delivery to area campgrounds is widely available. Bundle delivery, setup, and a generator if you're heading somewhere without hookups, like a Cherokee National Forest dispersed site.
fs.usda.gov/cherokeeHow do payment and the security deposit work?
It's straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Strawberry Plains, TN through RVezy, you pay the trip cost online through the platform (credit/debit card), never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit hold is placed before your trip starts, the amount varies by RV and is shown clearly on the listing, and it's released back to you after pickup inspection confirms no damage or policy violations. To avoid any deposit issues: do the walkthrough carefully at pickup, photograph the RV inside and out, return it on time with fuel and propane levels matching pickup, and follow the host's pet and smoking rules.
