Campgrounds and RV parks near Surgoinsville, TN

Cherokee Lake dominates the local outdoor scene. The TVA reservoir has about 28,780 acres of water surface and around 400 miles of shoreline, sitting in Jefferson, Grainger, Hamblen and Hawkins counties in East Tennessee. Anglers target largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye or saugeye, and channel catfish. Boaters should check TVA daily elevation and generation schedules before hitching the trailer. Inland, families can visit Andrew Johnson National Historic Site and Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in Greene County, hike Laurel Run Park near Church Hill for waterfalls, or tour Appalachian Caverns. Bristol Motor Speedway and Dollywood are within day-trip range for a bigger outing. At Baileyton KOA Holiday, on-site features include a driving range, gem-mining sluice, spring-fed ponds, wooded hiking trails, and seasonal planned activities, plus a seasonal pool.

Kingsport and the surrounding area experience a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, cold winters, rainfall spread through the year, summer thunderstorms, and occasional winter snowfall. Late spring through early fall is the core RV season. Mid-April to late May brings wildflowers, dogwoods, and mild days, while October delivers strong autumn color across the Holston and Clinch ridges. Summer is peak booking season for private parks and TVA lake areas. Weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day fill early, and Bristol Motor Speedway race weekends pull heavy RV demand across a wide radius. TVA works to keep reservoirs as full as possible during the summer for recreation while also providing flood control, navigation, water supply, and power generation, then begins the annual drawdown to open winter flood-storage capacity. In a year with normal rainfall, Cherokee Reservoir water levels vary about 30 feet from summer to winter to provide seasonal flood storage, which can expose stump fields and close some private docks and skinny ramps. Many private RV parks stay open year-round, but seasonal amenities such as pools and planned activities close after Labor Day.

Roads into the smaller RV parks around Surgoinsville include narrow county routes and short stretches of gravel. Interstate 81 runs south of town, and several nearby campgrounds sit within a few miles of an exit. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the interstate and along U.S. 11W, but drops in hollows and along the Clinch Mountain ridge. Full hookups are common at private parks such as Baileyton KOA Holiday, which offers big-rig friendly pull-through and back-in sites with 30 and 50 amp electric. Expect basic supplies at on-site stores; for full grocery runs, plan on Rogersville, Greeneville, or Kingsport. Bears are present in the surrounding mountains but not a constant camp concern in the valley. Standard food-storage habits are still worth following, along with checking fire restrictions before lighting a ring.
