Campgrounds near Tusculum, Tennessee
Tusculum sits in Greene County in East Tennessee, tucked between the Nolichucky River and the Bald Mountains along the North Carolina line. The area serves as a practical base for RV trips into the Cherokee National Forest, the Appalachian Trail corridor, and the northern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains region. Greeneville, the county seat, is minutes away for groceries, propane, and supplies.
Campground options within a short drive range from full-hookup RV resorts to rustic creekside sites. Private options nearby include Lazy Llama Campground, Old Mountain Campground, and White Sands RV Resort. Hemlock Hollow Farm Shoppe and Cabins offers a mix of private cabins and campsites along Upper Paint Creek, with a bathhouse, hot showers, water hookups, and laundry facilities, and it caters heavily to Appalachian Trail hikers.
RVers should note that David Crockett Birthplace State Park has been closed to the public since September 2024 after catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Helene, and the campground has not been rebuilt. Only the Crockett Shoals Overlook Trail has reopened, so confirm status directly with Tennessee State Parks before including it in a trip plan.
Things to do near Tusculum
The Nolichucky River is the region's main draw for paddling and trout fishing, with class III-IV whitewater in the gorge upstream when flows allow. Hiking is easy to reach: the Appalachian Trail crosses the ridgelines just south of Tusculum, and Hemlock Hollow Farm Shoppe and Cabins sits close to the trail on Upper Paint Creek, making it a convenient base for day hikes and slack-packing.
Historic stops fill the rainy-day slots. The town of Greeneville preserves the home and tailor shop of President Andrew Johnson at the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site. When it eventually reopens, the David Crockett Birthplace site in Limestone marks the frontiersman's 1786 birth site.
Cherokee National Forest offers additional trailheads, mountain biking, and scenic drives within a short drive of most local campgrounds.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of East Tennessee. April through early June brings wildflowers, dogwood bloom, and consistent river flows for paddling, with daytime highs comfortable for hiking. Mid-October delivers reliable hardwood color across the Bald Mountains and Cherokee National Forest, and weekend sites at private campgrounds book out well in advance.
Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. July is the wettest month of the year, averaging around 117 millimeters of rain. Sites with electric hookups are worth booking for air conditioning, and shaded loops fill first. The Nolichucky often runs low by late summer, which shifts paddlers to dam-controlled sections upstream.
Winter is the quiet season. Overnight lows drop below freezing on many nights, and some private campgrounds reduce services or close bathhouses. Travelers should also monitor the recovery status of David Crockett Birthplace State Park, which remains closed to the public following Hurricane Helene in September 2024.

How to book campgrounds near Tusculum
Tennessee State Parks use a single online reservation system through reserve.tnstateparks.com. Advanced reservations are available prior to arrival and may be made up to 1 year in advance, with a non-refundable advanced reservation fee per campsite that supports the reservation system. Note that David Crockett Birthplace State Park, the closest state park to Tusculum, remains closed and its campground is not currently taking bookings.
Private campgrounds near Tusculum, including Lazy Llama Campground, Old Mountain Campground, White Sands RV Resort, and Hemlock Hollow Farm Shoppe and Cabins, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and October leaf-peeping weekends fill first, so reserve several weeks out for prime dates.
Tennessee State Parks require that individuals renting overnight accommodations be eighteen years of age or older, and a parent or an adult must accompany anyone under eighteen.
What to expect at Tusculum campgrounds
Sites in this corridor range from paved full-hookup pads at RV resorts to gravel or grass sites with water and electric only, and rustic tent and cabin sites along the creeks. Loops at the private campgrounds tend to be laid out with walking distance to restrooms and showers.
Cell service is generally usable in the valley but drops off in the ridges and hollows of the Bald Mountains. Wi-Fi availability varies by operator, so confirm with the campground if remote work is a factor.
Firewood rules matter here. Tennessee State Parks asks that all campfires be made with heat-treated wood or downed wood collected inside the park near the campsite, and untreated wood should not be brought into the park from outside. Black bears are active in the surrounding Cherokee National Forest, so food, trash, and scented items should be stored inside the RV or a hard-sided vehicle overnight.
