Campgrounds near Whiteville, Tennessee
Whiteville sits in Hardeman County in West Tennessee, roughly midway between Memphis and Jackson along US-64. The area is rural and wooded, with the Hatchie River corridor to the north and the rolling terrain of Chester and Hardeman counties to the east. RV travelers use Whiteville as a base for state park recreation, wildlife refuges, and quiet lake camping.
Campground options near town range from full-service private parks to a state park with hookup sites. Serendipity Brownsville's Venue, Resort, and RV Park and Big Buck Camping Resort sit on the private side, while Cherokee Landing Campground and Hidden Acres RV Park offer smaller stays close to the highway. Wrangler Equestrian - Chickasaw State Park caters specifically to travelers hauling horses, though renovations have periodically closed portions of the state park campgrounds.
Chickasaw State Park sits on some of the highest terrain in West Tennessee and includes Lake Placid, Lake Lajoie, and a mix of hardwood forest and lake shoreline. It anchors the region's public-land camping and is the most-reserved option for RV travelers passing through.
Things to do near Whiteville
Chickasaw State Park is the main draw. Visitors can hike, swim, paddle, bird, fish, and ride horseback across 1,280 acres of park surrounded by a larger state forest. Lake Placid allows fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish, and the park stables rent horses for guided trail rides. Paddleboats, paddleboards, and a disc golf course round out on-site activities.
North of Whiteville, Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge protects roughly 11,556 acres of bottomland floodplain along the Hatchie River. The refuge offers a wildlife drive around O'Neal Lake, kayaking on the Hatchie, birding, and year-round fishing.
Day trips reach Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park, Big Hill Pond State Park, and the towns of Bolivar, Henderson, and Jackson.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping in West Tennessee. March through May brings mild days and greening hardwoods, but it is also the region's most active severe-weather stretch. West Tennessee sits inside the area often called Dixie Alley, where tornado activity peaks in spring, so travelers should keep a NOAA weather radio in the rig and monitor forecasts.
Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms common. Highs sit in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit and dew points stay high. Lake swimming, shaded hardwood trails, and full-hookup sites with 30/50-amp service make the heat manageable.
Fall brings cooler nights and lighter crowds, with September the driest month of the year in the region. Winter is the quiet season: many private parks stay open, and Chickasaw State Park operates year-round, though occasional ice storms and cold snaps can affect travel.
How to book campgrounds near Whiteville
Chickasaw State Park uses the Tennessee State Parks reservation system at reserve.tnstateparks.com. Reservations may be made up to one year in advance, and there is a non-refundable $5.00 advanced reservation fee per campsite. Most campsites require a minimum two-night stay. Cancellations two or more days before arrival are refunded minus the reservation fee; cancellations one day out forfeit the first night. Portions of the Chickasaw campgrounds have been closed for renovations in recent seasons, so confirm site availability before booking.
Private parks such as Serendipity Brownsville's Venue, Resort, and RV Park, Big Buck Camping Resort, Cherokee Landing Campground, and Hidden Acres RV Park take direct bookings by phone or through their websites. Book summer weekends and any holiday stay several weeks ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Chickasaw's RV loop is on rolling terrain, so bring leveling blocks. The park has three campgrounds totaling 114 sites: 53 RV sites, 29 tent sites, and 32 wrangler sites. RV sites have water and 20/30/50-amp electrical hookups, and 26 sites offer full hookups with sewer. Some sites accommodate rigs up to 94 feet. A dump station serves the RV campground, and modern bathhouses provide hot showers.
Cell coverage inside Chickasaw is spotty. Reports from campers suggest AT&T reception is often poor, while Verizon and T-Mobile tend to perform better. Tennessee State Parks requires that all campfires use certified heat-treated wood or downed wood collected inside the park; bringing untreated firewood is not allowed. Heat-treated bundles are sold at the park camp store and by vendors in nearby communities.
