Campgrounds and RV parks near Anson, TX

Anson is best known for the Texas Cowboys' Christmas Ball, held each December, and for the Jones County Courthouse on the town square. Day trips run south to Abilene for the Frontier Texas! museum, the Grace Museum, and the zoo, or east to Lake Fort Phantom Hill for fishing and paddling. At Abilene State Park, visitors can fish, hike, bike, boat or picnic at Lake Abilene, and a one-mile nature trail plus an ADA-compliant half-mile trail are available in the main park area. A historic water tower and observation deck built by the CCC using rust-colored sandstone overlook the large swimming pool, though pool availability varies by season and recent notices have kept it closed for renovations. Buffalo Gap Historic Village, just outside the park entrance, adds a walkable set of frontier-era buildings that pairs well with a state-park day.

The Anson area has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot, winters are cold, and the area receives moderate precipitation, with a strong pattern of wetter summers often bringing heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms; winters see occasional snowfall. Spring and fall are the most comfortable RV windows, though spring storms and hail are common across the region. At Abilene State Park, the July average high is 95 degrees, the January average low is 31 degrees, first freeze occurs mid-November, and last freeze occurs mid-March. Shade matters in summer; sites under pecan and oak canopy stay noticeably cooler than open pull-throughs. Hunt dates and lake conditions affect access. Park hunt dates restrict access to Lake Abilene overnight during scheduled hunts, though the main park grounds remain open, and low lake levels have at times closed the Lake Abilene boat ramps and paused swimming and fishing there, so travelers should check current status before booking.

Anson itself is a small county-seat town with a courthouse square, a grocery store, and fuel. Most RV services, big-box stores, propane, and RV parts are in Abilene, so travelers should plan resupply stops there before heading to more remote sites. Winds on the Rolling Plains are steady and often strong; awnings and slide-toppers need to be secured. Cell service is generally solid along US 277 and I-20 but can be patchy on ranch roads. Summer heat is intense, and shaded sites at Abilene State Park fill first. At Abilene State Park, sites range from primitive tent spots to water and electric hookups, with some RV sites offering full hookups including water, electricity, and sewer. Group facilities include a hall with kitchen and dining area, plus screened shelters and cabins with basic amenities.
