Campgrounds and RV parks near Aurora, TX

The LBJ National Grassland is the main outdoor draw in the area. It covers roughly 20,000 acres of prairie and post oak country with multi-use trails shared by hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers. Black Creek Lake within the grassland has a developed recreation area with picnic units, walk-in camp units, a boat ramp, and an accessible fishing bridge, and smaller ponds offer bank fishing. For day trips, Fort Worth is roughly 45 minutes south and offers the Stockyards, Botanic Garden, and the Kimbell Art Museum. Texas Motor Speedway sits between Aurora and Fort Worth and hosts NASCAR and IndyCar weekends. Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Bridgeport provide boat ramps, swim beaches, and shoreline day-use areas within a short drive.

North Texas has a long RV season, but spring and fall are the most comfortable windows. March through May brings mild temperatures and wildflowers, but it is also the peak severe-weather season, with thunderstorms, hail, and tornado risk across the Wise County area. Travelers should monitor National Weather Service Fort Worth forecasts and know where their park's shelter or sturdy building is located. Summer is hot. Most summer days reach at least 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and triple-digit afternoons are common in July and August. Full hookups with functioning air conditioning become essential, and shaded sites fill first. Late-summer heat also drives up burn-ban activity in Wise County, which restricts campfires on public and often private land. Fall through early winter is the quieter shoulder season. October and November bring cooler nights, lower humidity, and better hiking conditions on LBJ Grassland trails. Winter camping is generally viable with occasional freeze events, and most private RV parks in the area operate year-round.

Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, mixed oak and mesquite cover, and long sightlines typical of the Cross Timbers region. Most private RV parks in the Aurora area offer full hookups, gravel or concrete pads, and pull-through sites suited to larger rigs. Amenities vary: some properties are amenity-light long-stay parks, while others include laundry, showers, and dog runs. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable along the 287 and 114 corridors. Roads leading to LBJ Grassland trailheads include unpaved Forest Service routes that can become muddy after rain. Drinking water is limited in the grassland, so RV travelers should arrive with full fresh tanks. Bring insect repellent from spring through fall, and pack layers for winter nights that can drop below freezing.
