Benbrook camping overview
Benbrook sits about ten miles southwest of downtown Fort Worth, on the shore of Benbrook Lake where the Clear Fork of the Trinity River is impounded. The lake and its surrounding parks are owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, and function as the primary outdoor draw for RV travelers in this part of North Texas.
RV travelers have two broad choices in the area. Federal campgrounds on Benbrook Lake, specifically Holiday Park and Bear Creek Campground, offer sites with electric and water hookups and are booked through the national Recreation.gov system. Private RV parks in the surrounding Benbrook and Fort Worth area, such as Gallagher Acres RV Park, Cowtown RV Park, Lakeview RV Park, and Open Valley RV Park, tend to focus on full hookups, longer-stay flexibility, and easy interstate access.
Many visitors use Benbrook as a base for Fort Worth attractions like the Stockyards and cultural district while still camping on or near the water. Interstate 20 and US Highway 377 provide the main access routes into and out of the area.
Things to do near Benbrook
Benbrook Lake is the center of most recreation. Boat ramps at Bear Creek, Mustang Park, and Rocky Creek Park support fishing, sailing, and boating, and the lake is well known for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. Boat ramps operate from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and swimming is not permitted near any of the ramps.
On land, the Corps park system includes trails used by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, plus wildlife viewing areas around open shorelines, wooded bottoms, and upland prairie. Trail closures happen from time to time, so riders and cyclists should check current status with the Benbrook Lake Project Office before hauling in.
Fort Worth itself is a short drive northeast and adds the Stockyards, Fort Worth Zoo, museums in the cultural district, and Dickies Arena to a trip plan.

North Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate. Spring brings mild temperatures and the region's wettest stretch, with May typically the peak month for thunderstorms, hail, and tornado activity. RV travelers should monitor National Weather Service Fort Worth/Dallas outlooks and have a severe-weather plan before setting up.
Summers are hot, with most days reaching at least 90 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent stretches of triple-digit afternoons in July and August. Lake use peaks from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the Corps' Bear Creek Campground operates on a seasonal schedule from April through September, while Holiday Park stays open year-round.
Fall is generally the most comfortable window for RV camping: warm days, cooler nights, and lower severe-weather risk than spring. Winters are cool rather than harsh, with brief cold snaps possible; snowfall is rare and usually limited to traces or a light dusting. Some day-use facilities keep shorter hours in the off-season.

How to book campsites near Benbrook
Federal sites at Benbrook Lake, at Holiday Park and Bear Creek Campground, are reserved through the national Recreation One Stop system online at Recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777. Bear Creek Campground no longer accepts cash or checks, so a credit or debit card is required for reservations and on-site payments. The Benbrook Lake Project Office at 817-292-2400 handles other questions.
Corps rules cap stays at fourteen days within any thirty-day period across all parks on a given lake. Bear Creek operates from April through September, with park hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Private parks such as Gallagher Acres RV Park, Cowtown RV Park, Lakeview RV Park, and Open Valley RV Park are booked directly with the operator and generally allow longer stays.
What to expect on-site
At the Corps campgrounds on Benbrook Lake, expect electric hookups, potable water, restrooms with showers, and generously spaced sites with lake or wooded views. Holiday Park has 79 RV and trailer sites with electric hookups, and most also have water; Bear Creek has 40 sites with 20/30 amp electric and water, plus a handful of 50 amp sites and a couple with sewer. Large rigs should confirm site dimensions before reserving.
Private options in the immediate Benbrook and Fort Worth area typically lean toward full hookups, pull-through sites, and paved interior roads suited to bigger motorhomes. Amenities vary by park, so verify laundry, Wi-Fi, and pet rules directly with properties such as Cowtown RV Park or Open Valley RV Park.
Campgrounds are restricted to registered campers; picnicking and day use happen in separate parks around the lake.

A refundable security deposit (shown on the listing and typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after dropoff, assuming no damage outside what is covered by your protection plan. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at both pickup and dropoff, take dated photos and video of the RV inside and out, return it with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your host requests it.
