Campgrounds and RV parks near Bonham, TX

Water recreation is the main draw. Lake Bonham Recreation Area offers a double-wide launch ramp, an enclosed heated and cooled event center, an open pavilion, a public beach for swimming, a fishing dock, a playground, and lakeside campsites. Anglers target crappie and other panfish, and paddlers can put in at protected coves along the shoreline. A boat permit is required for any watercraft launched on the lake. At Bonham State Park, families can fish the 65-acre lake, borrow tackle at park headquarters, and rent paddle boats, kayaks, or canoes from park staff during posted hours. The lake has a 5-mph speed limit. An 11-mile trail for hiking and mountain biking, a playground, a half basketball court, a boat ramp, a boat dock, and a lighted fishing pier round out on-site activities. In town, the Sam Rayburn House Museum, Fannin County Museum of History, and the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site in nearby Denison give rainy days a plan.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping. March through May brings green prairie and wildflowers, but it also overlaps with North Texas severe-weather season. Severe thunderstorm and tornado watches issued by the National Weather Service routinely include Fannin County and the city of Bonham, so travelers should monitor forecasts and know their rig's safe-shelter plan. Summer is hot and humid, with a July average high around 95 degrees at Bonham State Park. Full-hookup sites with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing so air conditioning can run through the afternoon. Lake use peaks over Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends, and demand at state and city campgrounds spikes accordingly. Fall cools quickly through October and November and is often the best window for hiking and shoulder-season paddling. Winters are mild but variable, with occasional freezes. Prescribed burns are planned in the region between September and April, depending on weather, and smoke may temporarily affect trails, day-use areas, or camping loops. Dry, windy stretches can also trigger county burn bans, so check status before planning a campfire.

Bonham State Park offers a compact loop of 20 campsites ranging from full hookups to tent sites with water and electricity, plus a group camp for larger parties. Restrooms with showers sit across from park headquarters, and a dump station is available. Gates are closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., so arrivals should be timed accordingly. Reservable RV sites accommodate rigs up to about 50 feet. At Lake Bonham Recreation Area, sites sit close to the water and are operated by the City of Bonham. Available hookups typically include electric and water, with sewer at some sites, along with restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Gate access after 10 p.m. is limited to overnight guests with a reservation code. One active advisory: the lake at Bonham State Park has been infested with hydrilla, which can affect swimming, fishing, and boating due to heavy surface vegetation. Park staff are working on control efforts. Confirm current lake conditions with the park before planning water activities.
