Campgrounds and RV parks near Bowie, TX

Lake Amon G. Carter drives most outdoor plans. Anglers target largemouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, and crappie on the lake, which is reached off Texas Highway 59 and FM 1125. Public boat ramps and shoreline day-use areas at Selma Park round out lake access. In town, Bowie hosts Second Monday Trade Days, a long-running open-air market that draws vendors and shoppers each month. Golfers can play Top of the Lake Golf Course near the reservoir, and families often make the drive west to Lake Arrowhead State Park for hiking and swimming. Lake Arrowhead offers swimming, boating, fishing, and several miles of flat multi-use trails through mesquite grassland.

North Texas has a humid subtropical climate with sharp seasonal swings. Summers are hot and humid while winters are cool with little snowfall, and spring is the wettest period, bringing frequent afternoon thunderstorms and a well-known tornado risk across the region. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days and cool nights that suit shoulder-season site availability. Summer brings sustained heat. Afternoon highs regularly push into the mid-90s from June through August, and heat indices can climb higher when humidity spikes. Shaded pads and reliable 50-amp hookups matter in July and August, when running air conditioning through the day is standard. Winter camping is workable but cold and windy. Overnight lows near freezing are common from December through February, and North Texas is prone to occasional ice storms driven by cold fronts. Some smaller parks reduce services in the coldest months, so confirm hookups and office hours before arriving.

Expect small-park hospitality rather than resort-style amenities. Most Bowie-area RV parks are family- or owner-operated, with gravel or grass pads, mature shade trees near the lake, and basic on-site facilities. Typical amenities include full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, shaded sites, wifi of varying reliability, laundry, restrooms, showers, and a dog walk. Cell coverage along US 287 is generally reliable, but it thins on the back roads around the lake. Grocery runs, fuel, and propane are easiest in Bowie itself. Wildlife encounters near the water can include deer, raccoons, and snakes in warmer months, so keep food secured and check under slides before departure.
