Campgrounds near Bronte, Texas
Bronte sits in Coke County in west-central Texas, roughly 30 miles north of San Angelo on U.S. Highway 277. The town serves as a small-scale base for RV travelers heading to E.V. Spence Reservoir to the west or the trails and lake at San Angelo State Park to the south. Terrain is open Rolling Plains, mesquite scrub, and cropland, and the region is windy and dry compared with central Texas.
RV options cluster around two anchors. Sites at E.V. Spence Reservoir, including Lake View Park - E.V. Spence Reservoir and Paint Creek Park - E.V. Spence Reservoir, sit within a park system managed by the Colorado River Municipal Water District, which oversees lake access and use fees. Water levels here fluctuate significantly with drought, so ramp usability and shoreline camping can change season to season.
Closer to San Angelo, Red Arroyo - San Angelo State Park offers electric sites on the south shore of O.C. Fisher Lake, while Concho Pearl RV Estates and San Angelo KOA Holiday provide full-hookup private-park stays with laundry and clubhouse amenities.
Things to do near Bronte
E.V. Spence Reservoir is known for open-water fishing and boating when levels permit. Paint Creek Park - E.V. Spence Reservoir and Lake View Park - E.V. Spence Reservoir both provide concrete boat ramps, picnic areas, and restrooms; check current lake levels through CRMWD before towing a boat.
San Angelo State Park, about 30 miles south, offers more than 40 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus ranger-led interpretive programs covering petroglyphs, Permian-era tracks, the resident longhorn and bison herds, and stargazing. The Red Arroyo area on the south shore sits closest to town.
In San Angelo itself, Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, the International Waterlily Collection, and the downtown river walk along the Concho River give families off-park options for a half-day trip.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Texas. Daytime highs are pleasant, wildflowers appear on the Rolling Plains in April, and San Angelo State Park's trail network is at its best. Spring also brings the region's wettest stretch, with May typically the peak rainfall month, plus thunderstorm and tornado risk along the edge of Tornado Alley.
Summer is hot. San Angelo averages highs near the upper 90s in July and August, and shade is scarce at Red Arroyo and the Spence Reservoir parks. Early-morning hikes and lake-based recreation dominate; afternoon storms are possible, though July is typically drier than the surrounding months.
Winters are mild by day but cold at night, with occasional freezes and rare snowfall. Public hunts periodically close the Bald Eagle, North Concho, and Riverbend camping areas at San Angelo State Park from fall into January, and some January hunts also affect Isabel Harte and trails near Red Arroyo, so check the park's alerts before booking those loops.
How to book campgrounds near Bronte
San Angelo State Park sites at Red Arroyo are reserved through the Texas State Parks reservation system operated by ReserveAmerica, either online or by phone at 512-389-8900. A daily park entrance fee applies on top of the site fee, and the maximum stay is 14 nights. Group sites at the Chaparral area require calling Group Reservations at 512-389-8920.
E.V. Spence Reservoir sites, including Lake View Park and Paint Creek Park, fall under the Colorado River Municipal Water District rather than a state agency, so contact CRMWD or the on-site concessionaire for current access rules and fees.
Concho Pearl RV Estates and San Angelo KOA Holiday take reservations directly through the park operator, with nightly, weekly, and monthly rates available. Book several weeks out for spring weekends, San Angelo rodeo dates, and holiday periods.
What to expect
Expect open, exposed sites with limited shade and steady wind. Reviews at Red Arroyo consistently mention gusty conditions, so bring extra tie-downs, awning stakes, and stabilizers. Sites there are well-spaced and level, and most rig sizes fit, though a few pads have a noticeable slope.
Cell coverage is generally usable on major carriers around San Angelo State Park and in town; expect weaker service the closer you get to E.V. Spence Reservoir. The state park's Red Arroyo bathhouse has hot showers but limited capacity, and sticker burs are common in grassy areas, so wear closed shoes and watch pets.
Water levels at Spence Reservoir can shift access, and boat ramps may be unusable during drought. Confirm conditions before arrival if boating is central to the trip.
