Campgrounds near Coldspring, Texas
Coldspring sits in the Piney Woods of San Jacinto County, wedged between the Sam Houston National Forest to the west and Lake Livingston to the east. That geography defines RV camping in the area: shaded forest sites, lakefront hookup loops, and small private parks along the FM roads that connect them.
The headline public destination is Lake Livingston State Park, which fronts the reservoir and offers full-hookup loops including Red Oak, Yaupon, and Pin Oak. Sam Houston National Forest surrounds Coldspring on multiple sides and adds developed recreation areas plus dispersed hunter camps for self-contained rigs.
Private parks fill in the gaps for travelers who want reservable hookups without the state-park booking window. New Adventure RV Park and Horse Hotel, LLC and Sam Houston RV Park and Campground both operate near town, while Browders Marina RV Park and Campground serves boaters heading out on the lake.
Things to do around Coldspring
Lake Livingston is the main draw. At roughly 83,000 acres, it supports bass and catfish angling, pontoon and ski boating, and swimming at designated beaches. Browders Marina RV Park and Campground puts trailered boats close to a ramp for early launches.
On land, the Lone Star Hiking Trail runs through Sam Houston National Forest and is the longest continuous foot trail in Texas, with multiple access points near Coldspring. Double Lake Recreation Area adds a swim beach, a small fishing lake, and a paved loop suitable for kids on bikes.
In town, the San Jacinto County Courthouse square is walkable, and Old Town Coldspring hosts local shops. Huntsville, about 40 minutes west, adds grocery runs, fuel, and the Sam Houston statue and museum complex for a rainy-day detour.

Spring and fall are the strongest RV windows. March through May brings mild highs, wildflowers along FM roads, and comfortable nights, though thunderstorm cells move through quickly and can flood low-lying forest roads. Fall, roughly late September into November, cools off and thins the crowds while lake temperatures stay swimmable into October.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs in the 90s and heat indexes higher. Shaded loops like Pin Oak Loop - Lake Livingston State Park and Red Oak/Yaupon Loop - Lake Livingston State Park book out early for weekends and holidays, so plan well ahead. Biting insects peak in this window.
Winter is mild by national standards but wet, with cold fronts pushing through every week or so. Lake Livingston State Park has an ongoing improvement project with completion targeted for September, and some camping areas may be closed during construction, so confirm loop availability before booking.

Great experience for a 1st time RV user. RV performed well. Would recommend to family and friends. We did not camp as this was a hard road trip. For our needs this worked well. Excellent communication and owner was patient as he walked us thru the initial delivery and was available by phone with our minor questions mid trip.

How to book campsites near Coldspring
Lake Livingston State Park uses the Texas State Parks reservation system operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Standard campsites are reservable up to five months in advance, and the park allows site-specific booking, so travelers can pick an individual pad in Red Oak/Yaupon Loop or Pin Oak Loop from an interactive map. Friday or Saturday arrivals often carry a two-night minimum, and a daily per-person entrance fee applies on top of the site charge.
Sam Houston National Forest developed campgrounds are booked through Recreation.gov, while dispersed and hunter camps are first-come, first-served. Private parks such as New Adventure RV Park and Horse Hotel, LLC, Browders Marina RV Park and Campground, and Sam Houston RV Park and Campground take bookings directly by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the campgrounds are paved to the loop entrances, with some gravel or hardpack inside. Sites in the Piney Woods are heavily shaded by loblolly pine and hardwoods, which helps in summer but can complicate satellite reception and solar charging. Cell service is reliable in town and spotty deeper in the national forest.
Alligators live in Lake Livingston and its backwaters, so keep pets leashed near the shoreline and follow posted signs. Snakes, fire ants, mosquitoes, and ticks are all part of the ecosystem; bring repellent and check kids at the end of the day.
Coldspring itself is small. Stock up on groceries, propane, and RV supplies in Livingston, Cleveland, or Huntsville before arrival, and top off fuel when convenient.

Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches sit between $250 and $400 nightly. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-livingston/fees-facilities/campsitesDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Coldspring?
Good news, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Coldspring. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class B license for personal-use RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating over 26,000 pounds, and almost every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy falls comfortably below that threshold. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from out of state? Your home state license is honored on Texas roads. From abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you are set to explore the Piney Woods.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Coldspring RV rental?
Every RV rental in Coldspring booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can roll into Sam Houston National Forest with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you meaningful financial peace of mind (this is protection coverage, not traditional auto insurance). You choose your preferred coverage tier during checkout, with different levels available depending on how much protection feels right for your trip. It is the kind of safety net that lets first-time renters relax and focus on the lake views instead of the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Coldspring RV trip?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that grace period, your refund depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so your plans stay protected. East Texas hurricane season runs June through November, so if a Gulf storm is forecast, message RVezy support early, they are available to walk you through your options. Review the full cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Coldspring RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Coldspring, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see listings ready to welcome your dog. Sam Houston National Forest is one of the most dog-loving destinations in East Texas: leashed pets are allowed at Double Lake Recreation Area, along the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail, and at Lake Livingston State Park campsites (pets just can't enter park buildings). Bring a long lead for lakeside lounging and plenty of water, summer pavement gets hot fast. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm their pet fee and any breed or size guidelines so check-in is smooth.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/things-to-do/pets-in-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Coldspring?
Yes, RV delivery Coldspring is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many hosts will drop the rig directly at Double Lake Recreation Area, Lake Livingston State Park, Rock'n E RV Park, or even a private property along Farm to Market 222, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just filter for Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your campsite number and arrival date. Pro tip: delivery fees in this area typically range from $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location, so booking a host based near Coldspring or Cleveland keeps costs low.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/texas/recarea/?recid=29994How far can I travel from Coldspring on an RV road trip?
A Coldspring RV trip puts you within easy striking distance of some of Texas's best outdoor destinations. Houston sits about 65 miles south (roughly 1.5 hours), Galveston Island and the Gulf beaches are 130 miles south (about 2.5 hours), and Brazos Bend State Park is 110 miles southwest. Heading east, the Big Thicket National Preserve is 90 miles away, and Tyler's rose-country campgrounds are around 150 miles north. Many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others bundle 100 to 150 miles per night with a small overage fee, perfect if you're sticking near Lake Livingston. Always confirm the mileage policy on the listing before booking so your route fits your budget.
txdot.gov/What are the best campgrounds near Coldspring for RVs?
The best campgrounds near Coldspring deliver a true Piney Woods experience right out your RV door. Double Lake Recreation Area inside Sam Houston National Forest offers shaded lakeside sites with water and 50-amp electric for around $30 per night and a beautiful trail circling the 24-acre lake. Lake Livingston State Park (about 25 minutes east) has full-hookup sites in the Red Oak loop with reservations bookable up to 5 months ahead through Texas Parks and Wildlife. Locally, Rock'n E RV Park and Camp Jason RV Resort on FM 222 offer full hookups close to town, while Wolf Creek Park sits right on Lake Livingston with a swim beach. Pro tip: book Red Oak sites the day they open, weekends sell out fast.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-livingstonWhen is the best time to plan RV camping in Coldspring?
The sweet spot for RV camping Coldspring is March through May and late September through November, when highs sit in the comfortable 70s and 80s and humidity backs off. Coldspring has a humid subtropical climate, so July and August routinely hit the mid-90s with heat indexes soaring past 110°F, doable if you book a rig with strong AC, but tougher on outdoor time. Winters are mild (January highs around 59°F, lows in the low 40s), making December through February a quiet, bargain-priced season for fishing and trail time. Hurricane season runs June through November, so check Gulf forecasts before any late-summer booking. Local insider tip: late October at Double Lake is pure magic, pine-scented air and zero mosquitoes.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Coldspring&state=TX&site=HGXI've never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Coldspring?
You'll do great, Coldspring is genuinely one of the friendliest places in Texas to learn. The roads in and out (State Highway 150, Farm to Market 2025, and FM 222) are flat, two-lane country routes with light traffic and clear sightlines through the pine forest, a world apart from Houston's freeways. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, tanks, and the generator, and you can text them anytime during your trip. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely your first time renting an RV, choose a host who offers delivery and setup at Double Lake or Lake Livingston State Park. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in the H-E-B parking lot in Livingston before heading to camp.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if I have a breakdown or flat tire near Coldspring?
You are never on your own, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Coldspring sits along State Highway 150 between Huntsville and Cleveland, both with full-service auto and tire shops within a 30-minute tow. For mechanical questions, message your host directly through the RVezy app, they know their rig better than anyone. If something happens deep in Sam Houston National Forest where cell service drops, drive or walk back toward FM 2025 or Highway 150 to regain signal. Pro tip: snap a photo of the nearest forest road sign at your campsite so dispatch can find you quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Coldspring RV rental across state lines or to Mexico?
Interstate travel is welcome, you can absolutely take your Coldspring RV into Louisiana (Lake Charles is just 2.5 hours east via I-10), Arkansas, Oklahoma, or further on a longer RV road trip from Coldspring. The protection package and roadside assistance follow you across U.S. state lines. Travel into Mexico, however, is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the southern border. If you're dreaming of a coastal swing, popular routes from this area include Coldspring to Galveston (2.5 hrs), Coldspring to New Orleans (5 hrs), and Coldspring to Big Bend National Park (10 hrs). Always confirm any out-of-state trip with your host through the listing message thread.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for a motorhome rental Coldspring is straightforward once you know the rig. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but drop your tow vehicle to 10 to 13 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A coaches get 6 to 9 MPG. Texas gas prices are typically among the lowest in the country, hovering near the national average, and you'll find easy fill-ups at the Exxon and Chevron stations in Coldspring on Highway 150 or larger truck stops in Cleveland (about 25 miles south) and Huntsville (35 miles west). For a 200-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan roughly $80 to $110 in gas. Pro tip: fill up in Cleveland before heading north, prices in tiny Coldspring run slightly higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Coldspring?
Booking ahead is the single best move you can make. Lake Livingston State Park accepts reservations up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and weekend full-hookup sites in the Red Oak loop disappear the day they open, especially March through May and October. Double Lake Recreation Area inside Sam Houston National Forest takes reservations through Recreation.gov up to 6 months out. Private parks like Rock'n E and Camp Jason are usually bookable 30 to 60 days ahead with more flexibility. Pro tip: if your dates are locked but the park looks full, set a free cancellation alert through services like Campnab, last-minute openings are common 7 to 14 days out.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234074What are the local driving conditions like around Coldspring?
Driving an RV around Coldspring is refreshingly relaxed. The main routes (State Highway 150, FM 2025, FM 222, and FM 156) are flat two-lane roads through dense Piney Woods, with speed limits of 55 to 65 mph and very little traffic outside of weekday school hours. Watch for occasional logging trucks, white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, and standing water on low-water crossings after heavy rain (East Texas gets about 52 inches annually). Summer afternoon thunderstorms roll in quickly between June and September, so check radar before driving. Avoid taking large rigs down unmarked forest service roads, many have low pine branches and soft shoulders. Pro tip: the State Highway 156 bridge across Lake Livingston offers a stunning sunrise photo stop on your way to Onalaska.
drivetexas.org/What hookups and amenities do Coldspring-area campgrounds offer?
You'll find the full range of campground amenities within 20 minutes of Coldspring. Double Lake Recreation Area offers water and 50-amp electric sites with flush toilets and showers (no on-site dump station, but one is available a few miles away in the forest). Lake Livingston State Park's Red Oak loop has full hookups (water, electric, sewer) plus a dump station, park store, and marina. Private parks like Rock'n E RV Park, Camp Jason RV Resort, and New Adventure RV Park provide full hookups with WiFi, laundry, and bathhouses. To dump tanks and fill fresh water between stops, the Lake Livingston State Park dump station is the most reliable public option. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any state park, forest sites have water spigots but no in-rig fills.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-livingston/fees-facilities/campsites/campsites-full-red-oakWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Coldspring?
Most RVs on the platform come ready to camp from the moment you turn the key. Expect a real bed (or two), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and basic cookware, a wet bath or full bathroom, dinette seating with seatbelts, roof air conditioning (essential for East Texas summers), and a furnace for cool winter nights. Many listings also include a generator for boondocking in Sam Houston National Forest, a TV with DVD or streaming setup, outdoor camp chairs, and a leveling kit. WiFi isn't standard, but Verizon and AT&T hotspots work well around Coldspring. Always check the listing's amenities tab and message the host if you need something specific, like a coffee maker or kids' bunks. Pro tip: ask if linens and kitchen starter packs are included to save packing time.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/texas/recarea/?recid=29994What add-ons and options can I get with my Coldspring RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer a great menu of add-ons to customize your Coldspring trip. Popular options include delivery and setup ($2 to $5 per mile), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour beyond included hours), linen and towel packages ($25 to $75 flat), camping kits with chairs and a grill, bike racks, kayaks (perfect for paddling Double Lake), and pet cleaning fees ($50 to $100). Pickup and dropoff are typically scheduled between 1 to 5 pm and 9 to 11 am respectively, and many hosts offer flexible windows if you message ahead. Mileage policies vary from 100 miles per night included to unlimited mileage, with overages around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a kayak add-on at Lake Livingston State Park is a memory-maker for under $150 extra.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-livingstonHow do payments and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and pre-authorized on your card before pickup to cover incidentals like fuel top-offs, tank dumps, or minor damage not covered by the protection plan. Deposit amounts vary by rig for Coldspring rentals. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you received it, with tanks handled per the host's instructions, the deposit is released back to your card after the trip ends. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and fuel gauge at pickup and dropoff to keep everything smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle summer heat on a Coldspring RV trip?
East Texas summers are hot and humid, but a little planning makes them genuinely fun. From late June through early September, Coldspring highs average 92 to 96°F with heat indexes that can push past 110°F, so prioritize RVs with strong roof AC and book full-hookup sites (like Red Oak at Lake Livingston State Park or Rock'n E RV Park) where you can run AC all day on 50-amp shore power. Plan driving for early morning, hike the Lone Star Trail before 10 am, and spend afternoons swimming at Double Lake or paddling Lake Livingston. Drink water constantly and watch for afternoon thunderstorms. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (March to May, October to November) deliver the same Piney Woods magic at half the sweat, and rental prices are noticeably lower.
