Campgrounds near Crane, Texas
Crane sits in the Permian Basin of West Texas, roughly 40 miles south of Odessa and within a short drive of Interstate 20. The area is oil-country terrain: flat, arid, and open, with services concentrated in the small towns strung along US-385 and I-20. RV travelers passing through the region or working in the oilfield use Crane as a base, with additional options in nearby Monahans, Odessa, and Midland.
Closest to town, Gracelyn RV Park and Pleasant Parks RV Estates offer full-hookup sites geared to long-stay and workforce guests. Gettin' Hitched and Mesquite Oasis RV Park and Corporate Housing round out the in-town choices, blending overnight sites with corporate housing amenities.
About an hour north, Monahans Sandhills State Park is a 3,840-acre state park in Ward and Winkler counties managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The park is noted for sand dunes up to 70 feet high and stays open year-round, making it a popular stop between Dallas and Big Bend.
Things to do near Crane
Monahans Sandhills State Park is the main outdoor draw. Visitors rent sand discs at park headquarters, available daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to slide and tumble down the dunes. Hikers can wander freely across the open sand, and an equestrian area is set aside for horseback riding. The dune field constantly reshapes with the wind, so the landscape looks different from one visit to the next.
In town, Crane's local sights include a memorial to Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and a two-thirds-scale Stonehenge replica. Odessa and Midland, both within driving distance, offer indoor stops for hot days: the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center, and the I-20 Wildlife Preserve. San Angelo State Park works as a longer day trip for wildlife viewing and hiking.

West Texas swings hard between seasons. Summers are long, hot, and mostly clear, with average daily highs in the mid-90s from June through August and triple digits common. Shade is scarce in the region's open terrain, so RVers should confirm their rig's air conditioning is up to the load and plan outdoor time for early morning or evening.
Spring and fall are the more comfortable travel windows. Daytime temperatures moderate, humidity stays low, and wildflowers can appear across the sandhills after rain. Spring brings the strongest storm and severe-weather risk, generally from April into June, so keep an eye on NWS Midland/Odessa forecasts.
Winters are short and dry but not warm. Average January and December lows sit near freezing, and mean minimum temperatures can drop into the upper teens, and light snow is possible. September through November tend to be the busiest months at Monahans Sandhills, and the park recommends reservations for both camping and day use.
How to book
Private parks around Crane, including Gracelyn RV Park, Pleasant Parks RV Estates, Gettin' Hitched, and Mesquite Oasis RV Park and Corporate Housing, are typically booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Because these parks host oilfield workers on rotating schedules, weekly and monthly stays fill first, and short-notice overnight availability can be tight.
Monahans Sandhills State Park uses the Texas State Parks reservation system, and campsite reservations can be made up to 5 months in advance. A daily entrance fee of $4 per person 13 and older applies in addition to the campsite fee. The gate locks at 10 p.m. nightly and no after-hours access is available, so plan an arrival window and call the park if delayed.
What to expect
Expect a working-country setting rather than a scenic resort. Crane and its neighbors are small oilfield towns, so parks skew toward pull-through, full-hookup sites on caliche or gravel pads with strong power service, laundry, and reliable cell coverage. Shade trees are limited, and wind is a year-round factor.
At Monahans Sandhills State Park, sites feature covered picnic tables, grills, water, and electric hookups, plus access to a dump station. Some sites share a shade shelter, which matters because the dunes offer no natural cover. The campground accommodates RVs up to 45 feet.
Come prepared for blowing sand, bright sun, and swings between hot afternoons and cool nights. Stock extra water, sun protection, and awning tie-downs.
