San Angelo State Park is the anchor activity. The park has more than 50 miles of trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use, and is home to the official Texas State Longhorn herd, a managed bison herd, and a diverse bird population. Interpretive tours cover petroglyphs, Permian-era tracks, longhorns, bison, and stargazing. Water recreation centers on O.C. Fisher Reservoir inside the state park, Lake Nasworthy on the south edge of town, and E.V. Spence Reservoir to the north. O.C. October is often the sweet spot: warm afternoons, cooler nights, and lower storm risk than late spring. Summer runs hot. From Hwy 67, take Arden Rd west to FM 2288, then north to either the South Shore entrance for Red Arroyo or the North Shore entrance for Bald Eagle and North Concho. Entrance gates are open 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and both the South Shore and North Shore Gatehouses are staffed 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, staffing permitting. Terrain is flat to gently rolling mesquite and grassland with limited natural shade. Cell coverage is reliable near San Angelo and thinner around Paint Creek.
