Campgrounds and RV parks near Deport, TX

Day trips from Deport center on Paris and the surrounding lakes. In Paris, the replica Eiffel Tower topped with a red cowboy hat, the historic downtown square, the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, and the Lamar County Historical Museum are the main draws for families. Outdoor recreation is concentrated at Pat Mayse Lake, a Corps of Engineers reservoir of nearly 6,000 acres with about 67 miles of shoreline, roughly 12 miles north of Paris. Anglers target largemouth bass, white crappie, sunfish, striped bass, and channel and flathead catfish. The surrounding Pat Mayse WMA is open for public hunting of whitetail deer, upland game, and waterfowl in season. Closer to town, back roads through Red River and Lamar counties suit slow drives, small-town cafes, and courthouse and cemetery stops for history-minded travelers.

The Deport area has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and generally mild, cool winters. Spring is a busy RV season. March through May brings warming temperatures, wildflowers, and active fishing on Pat Mayse Lake, but also the region's wettest stretch and the peak of severe thunderstorm and tornado risk in North Texas. May is typically the wettest month, and lake levels can rise in spring and affect low waterfront campsites. Summer is hot and humid, with August highs averaging in the mid-90s Fahrenheit. Lake use peaks around holiday weekends, and the Corps campgrounds at Pat Mayse fill quickly for those dates. Water levels can drop during summer droughts, occasionally limiting boat ramp use. Fall brings cooler, drier weather from mid-September through November and is often the most comfortable time to camp. Winter is short and cool, with occasional freezes and only trace snow in most years. Corps campgrounds at Pat Mayse operate year-round, though private RV parks in the area may reduce office hours.

Deport itself is a small town of only a few hundred residents, so travelers should plan on driving to Paris for full grocery runs, propane, RV parts, and medical care. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the main highways but can be spotty on back roads and around parts of Pat Mayse Lake. Private RV parks near Deport tend to be small, quiet, and no-frills, with gravel or concrete pads, hookups, and basic laundry rather than pools or activity programs. Sites can be tight in older parks, so travelers with larger rigs should confirm pull-through length before booking. At Pat Mayse, expect Corps-standard facilities: level pads, water and electric at most developed sites, pit toilets on many loops, and shower buildings at Pat Mayse West and parts of Sanders Cove. Roads are rural and traffic is light, but watch for deer at dawn and dusk.
