RV camping near DeSoto, Texas
DeSoto sits in southern Dallas County, giving RV travelers quick access to campgrounds on both sides of the metroplex. The closest options are urban and semi-urban RV parks such as Dallas Hi Ho RV Park, Good Luck RV Park, and Northside RV Resort, all within a short drive of downtown Dallas and the I-20 and I-35E corridors.
For a lake setting, Joe Pool Lake sits centrally between Dallas and Fort Worth and is the closest sizable body of water for camping. Loyd Park covers about 791 acres of native Texas landscape on the west shore of Joe Pool Lake, roughly twenty miles northwest of DeSoto, and offers shaded, water-and-electric sites with a limited number of full-hookup pads.
Commercial parks fill the gap for travelers who want full hookups and pool access close to attractions. Traders Village RV Park in Grand Prairie is a common base for families visiting Six Flags Over Texas and the DFW-area sports venues, while the other private parks in DeSoto and nearby suburbs work well for business travel and airport stopovers.
Things to do from a DeSoto base camp
Joe Pool Lake anchors most outdoor plans. Visitors can swim, fish, and boat or paddle, with two four-lane boat ramps and a gravel swimming beach on the eastern shore. The DORBA Trail, named for the volunteers of the Dallas Off Road Biking Association, crisscrosses 1,200 acres and is open to bikers and hikers.
At Loyd Park-Joe Pool Lake, wooded multi-use trails run through the park along with a swim beach, boat ramp, and playground. Amenities include camping cabins, a lodge, restrooms and showers, picnic pavilions, a four-lane boat ramp, volleyball and softball fields, and hiking, biking and equestrian trails.
Off the water, families use DeSoto for day trips to Six Flags Over Texas, Hurricane Harbor, the Dallas Zoo, and the Fort Worth Stockyards.

North Texas is a year-round RV destination, but shoulder seasons are the sweet spot. Mid-March through mid-May and October through mid-November bring mild temperatures and green prairies around Joe Pool Lake. Wildflowers bloom across the prairies in spring, while summer is the ideal time for swimming and water sports, and autumn and winter offer the best bird-watching opportunities.
Summer heat is the main planning constraint. In July and August, the average high temperature is near 96 degrees F, while the average nighttime low is around 77 degrees F. Humidity stays high, so shaded, wooded sites and full-hookup parks with pools become essential. The tree cover at Loyd Park-Joe Pool Lake provides natural shade that keeps sites cooler during Texas summers.
Spring brings the wettest weather and the region's severe-storm season. Severe thunderstorms are generated with spectacular lightning shows, torrents of rain, hail, and occasionally, tornadoes, as Dallas sits at the lower end of Tornado Alley. Winters are generally mild, with occasional cold fronts and rare freezing rain that can briefly close roads or trails.

How to book campgrounds near DeSoto
State-park sites on Joe Pool Lake are booked through Texas Parks and Wildlife. Reservations can typically be made up to 5 months in advance, and the maximum reservation length is 14 consecutive nights. The park often reaches capacity, so reservations are highly recommended for both camping and day use, either online or by calling the customer service center.
Reservations for Loyd Park can be made through the City of Grand Prairie's parks system, as they manage this facility. When making reservations, specify whether you need a site with 30-amp or 50-amp service, as availability varies throughout the park. Full hookup sites are limited, so book these well in advance if needed.
Commercial parks like Traders Village RV Park, Dallas Hi Ho RV Park, Good Luck RV Park, and Northside RV Resort accept direct bookings by phone or through their websites.
What to expect on the ground
Lake sites lean rustic. On the eastern shore of Joe Pool Lake, all 350 developed campsites have water and electricity, with 150 also offering sewer hookups, and all sit near restrooms with hot showers. Loyd Park-Joe Pool Lake spreads across wooded terrain with sites accommodating RVs up to 50 feet, though most sites offer water and electric hookups only, with sewer connections available at a community dump station.
Commercial parks are more built-out. Traders Village RV Park offers concrete, level, big-rig-friendly pads with laundry, a pool, a store, and a dog park on site.
The county is under a quarantine to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer, so movement of firewood is restricted; buy firewood where you burn it.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near DeSoto, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in DeSoto, TX?
RV rental in DeSoto, TX is more affordable than most people expect, especially compared to Dallas hotel rates during big events. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A coaches from $300 and up. Hosts in the DeSoto and Dallas-Fort Worth area set their own pricing, so booking on weekdays or in the shoulder months of March and October usually unlocks the best deals. For a cheap RV rental DeSoto travelers love, filter by travel trailers and add delivery so you skip the tow vehicle cost. Pro tip: book 4 to 6 weeks ahead of Cowboys home games and the State Fair of Texas to lock in lower rates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=DeSoto%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in DeSoto, TX?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in DeSoto for personal use. Texas Transportation Code 522.004 specifically exempts recreational vehicles driven for personal use from Commercial Driver License (CDL) requirements, and a standard Class C license covers virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on the RVezy platform. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform, so there's nothing to mail or fax. Visiting from outside the United States? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in and you're ready to roll out of DeSoto.
dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/classes-driver-licensesWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in DeSoto?
Every RV rental in DeSoto, TX booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-35E or I-20 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose the level of coverage that fits you during checkout (hosts don't pick this for you). Coverage tiers vary, so you can match protection to how you travel. Pro tip: review the coverage options side-by-side at booking and choose the tier that matches how far you're traveling, especially if you're heading out to Big Bend or down to the Gulf Coast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my DeSoto RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your DeSoto RV rental with confidence. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start. Because the policy is handled by RVezy rather than listing-by-listing, you'll see the same fair process across every rent-an-RV-in-DeSoto option, and the policy is not displayed on individual listings. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for Cowboys games or State Fair weekends, knowing the grace period has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a DeSoto RV rental?
Absolutely, and DeSoto is a great launchpad for a pet-friendly RV trip. Many RVezy hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental DeSoto travelers love, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search. Once you're rolling, Cedar Hill State Park on Joe Pool Lake allows leashed pets on most trails and at campsites, and DeSoto's own Grimes Park has open green space for a stretch break. Dog-friendly Joe Pool Lake shoreline areas are a hit for water-loving pups. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee and bring proof of vaccinations, since Texas state parks may ask to see them at check-in.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cedar-hillCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in DeSoto?
Yes, RV delivery in DeSoto is one of the most popular options on the platform, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many hosts will drive the rig straight to Cedar Hill State Park, Loyd Park at Joe Pool Lake, your DeSoto driveway, or even a tailgate spot near AT&T Stadium in Arlington. They'll level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, walk you through every system, and pick it up when you're done, no towing experience required. Filter by Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your exact address. Pro tip: delivery fees are usually based on round-trip mileage from the host's location, so booking with a nearby DeSoto or Cedar Hill host keeps costs down.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=DeSoto%2C%20TexasHow many miles can I drive on a DeSoto RV rental, and are unlimited mileage rentals available?

Loyd Park in Grand Prairie sits on the opposite shore of Joe Pool Lake with full hookups and a swim beach. Traders Village RV Park in Grand Prairie is a year-round favorite with a pool and the famous weekend flea market next door. For a quieter vibe, Lynn Creek Park (USACE) offers waterfront sites about 25 minutes away. Pro tip: Cedar Hill State Park books out fast on weekends, reserve up to five months ahead through the Texas State Parks reservation system.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cedar-hillWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in DeSoto, TX?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for a DeSoto RV trip, specifically mid-March through May and mid-October through November. Daytime highs in those months sit comfortably between 67°F and 82°F, perfect for hiking the DORBA trails at Cedar Hill State Park or grilling lakeside at Joe Pool Lake. July and August are sweltering, with average highs near 95°F and heat index readings often climbing past 105°F, so plan early-morning drives and pick rigs with strong A/C if you're booking then. Winters are mild (highs in the mid-50s°F), making December and January surprisingly pleasant for snowbirds. Pro tip: book a March rental and time it with bluebonnet season along nearby Highway 67 toward Ennis.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay on a DeSoto rental?
You're going to be just fine, first-time renters are the majority of guests on RVezy. Every host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, slide-outs, water, propane, generator, and dumping, so you're never left guessing. Around DeSoto, I-35E and I-20 are wide, well-marked highways that make for easy first miles, and you can dodge downtown Dallas entirely by sticking to the southern loop. If a big rig still feels intimidating, choose a Class B campervan or a small travel trailer for your first time renting an RV. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick parking-lot practice loop before you drive away, most are happy to coach you.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if I break down or have a problem during my DeSoto RV trip?
You won't be stranded: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with RVezy protection plans, covering common issues like tire changes, towing, lockouts, jump starts, and fuel delivery anywhere in Texas. If something goes sideways on a backroad near Waxahachie or out on I-20, one phone call gets help dispatched. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip, and your host is just a message away for quick questions about the rig's systems. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave DeSoto, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, those are the first things they'll ask for.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best road trips from DeSoto, TX?
An RV road trip from DeSoto puts a huge slice of Texas within easy reach. Head 95 miles north to Lake Texoma for a weekend of boating and fishing on the Oklahoma border. Drive 195 miles south on I-35 to Austin for live music and Barton Springs. Roll 240 miles southeast to Houston and the Gulf Coast (Galveston is another hour beyond). For nature lovers, it's about 175 miles east to Caddo Lake's mossy cypress swamps or roughly 525 miles west to Big Bend National Park. Pro tip: Travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance, so plan your big trip inside the U.S. and you'll have plenty to explore.
traveltexas.com/What kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for in DeSoto?
Texas gas prices are usually among the lowest in the country, which is great news for your RV budget. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C and large travel trailers, and 18 to 22 MPG for Class B campervans and small trailers. With regular unleaded typically running around $2.80 to $3.20 per gallon at Buc-ee's, Murphy USA, and other DeSoto-area stations, a 300-mile weekend in a Class C costs roughly $75 to $100 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Buc-ee's in Terrell or Waxahachie before hitting the open highway, the prices are competitive and the bathrooms are legendary.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near DeSoto?
For the best campgrounds near DeSoto, plan to reserve early, especially Cedar Hill State Park on Joe Pool Lake, which accepts reservations up to five months in advance and routinely sells out on weekends from March through October. Book through the official Texas State Parks reservation system online or by calling (512) 389-8900. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds like Lynn Creek Park and Loyd Park take reservations up to six months out on Recreation.gov. Private parks like Traders Village RV Park usually have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: aim 90 days ahead for spring weekends, and check Tuesday mornings, that's when many cancellations free up prime lakefront sites at Cedar Hill State Park.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cedar-hill/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around DeSoto and the Dallas-Fort Worth metro?
DeSoto sits at the south edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metro, which makes for easy RV driving once you know the rhythm. I-35E, I-20, and the Bush Turnpike are flat, wide, and RV-friendly, but avoid the downtown Dallas Mixmaster and the lower deck of I-30 during weekday rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.). Watch for low clearances in older parts of Dallas and Oak Cliff, where some bridges sit under 12 feet, and always confirm your RV's height before routing. Texas spring storms can bring sudden hail in April and May, so check radar before heading out. Pro tip: head south on I-35E away from the city for the most relaxed first hour of driving, you'll be at Waxahachie in 25 minutes.
txdot.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near DeSoto?
You'll be impressed by what local campgrounds offer. At Cedar Hill State Park, all 350 developed sites have water and 30/50-amp electric, 150 sites include full sewer hookups, and there are hot showers, flush restrooms, and dump stations near each loop. Loyd Park and Lynn Creek Park on Joe Pool Lake provide full hookups, boat ramps, and swim beaches. Private parks like Traders Village RV Park in Grand Prairie add pools, laundry, Wi-Fi, and propane refill on site. Need to dump or fill water mid-trip? Cedar Hill State Park's dump station is free for registered campers, and many DFW-area Love's and Pilot truck stops along I-20 offer dump and potable water for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator, Texas park hookups are sometimes set further back than expected.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cedar-hillWhat features and amenities come standard in DeSoto RV rentals?
DeSoto motorhome rentals on RVezy come ready to camp. Expect a real bed (or two), a kitchen with fridge, stove, sink, and microwave, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof or dash air conditioning (a must in Texas summers), a furnace for cool nights, and DOT-approved seat belts for passengers. Most Class C and Class A rigs include a generator for off-grid power, and many hosts add a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and Wi-Fi hotspot. Linens, kitchenware, camp chairs, and outdoor mats are often available as add-ons. Pro tip: look for rigs with dual A/C units if you're booking July or August in DeSoto, that second unit makes a huge difference when it's 100°F outside.
rvia.org/What add-ons, pickup, and drop-off options should I know about?
DeSoto hosts make customizing your trip easy. Popular add-ons include linen and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), outdoor camp setups with chairs and a grill ($25 to $50), generators if not included, propane refills, and bike racks. Pickup is usually at the host's DeSoto, Cedar Hill, or Duncanville address, and many offer delivery to Cedar Hill State Park, AT&T Stadium tailgate lots, or Dallas Love Field/DFW airport for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: bundle linens and a kitchen kit if you're flying into DFW for your DeSoto RV trip, it saves you a Target run before you even start vacation.
dfwairport.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for a DeSoto RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through the secure RVezy platform, no cash, checks, or off-platform transfers needed. You'll pay your rental total, taxes, and any add-ons at booking using a major credit or debit card. A security deposit is collected separately from your booking payment; the amount is set by the host and rig (commonly $500 to $1,500) and is released after drop-off as long as the RV is returned in the same condition. Keeping all communication and payments inside RVezy is also what keeps you eligible for the included protection plan. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a short video at pickup and drop-off, that simple habit makes any deposit conversation effortless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my DeSoto RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Yes to interstate travel, no to Mexico. Your campervan rental DeSoto booking is welcome to cross into Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, and beyond throughout the United States, and your RVezy protection plan follows you nationwide. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend across that border. From DeSoto, popular cross-state runs include the 3-hour drive north to the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma, the 5-hour push east to Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, and the 6-hour route to New Orleans. Pro tip: confirm your mileage allowance with the host before any multi-state trip, and ask about a one-way drop-off if you're flying home from a different city.
