Campgrounds near Elkhart, Texas
Elkhart sits in Anderson County in the Piney Woods of East Texas, about ten miles south of Palestine on US Highway 287. The town serves as a quiet base for RV travelers exploring the surrounding lakes, pine forests, and the Texas State Railroad corridor that runs between Palestine and Rusk.
Most RV parks in the area are clustered around Palestine to the north and the Neches River bottomlands to the east. Palestine RV Park and Whippletree RV Resort offer full-hookup sites close to town amenities, while Palestine Campground - Texas State Railroad sits near the Palestine depot and caters to riders of the historic steam and diesel excursion trains. Salmon Lake RV and Music Park in Grapeland, southeast of Elkhart, is a longstanding bluegrass venue with lakeside sites and event weekends.
Davy Crockett National Forest lies roughly 30 miles east, and Lake Palestine sits to the north, putting reservoirs, hiking trails, and small-town Texas within easy driving range of any RV set up near Elkhart.
Things to do near Elkhart
The Texas State Railroad is the dominant attraction. Vintage steam and diesel excursions run between the Palestine and Rusk depots on a 50-mile round-trip through the Piney Woods, and Palestine Campground - Texas State Railroad puts riders close to the boarding platform.
Anglers head to Lake Palestine and Houston County Lake for bass, crappie, and catfish. Salmon Lake RV and Music Park hosts bluegrass festivals and jam sessions on weekends through the warmer months. Palestine's downtown offers restored brick storefronts, the Museum for East Texas Culture, and Davey Dogwood Park, which peaks with blooms in late March.
For hiking and paddling, the Neches River corridor and Davy Crockett National Forest provide trails, primitive routes, and the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area within a short drive east of town.

Spring is the peak window. Late March through May brings mild temperatures, the Dogwood Trails celebration in Palestine, and full operating schedules on the Texas State Railroad. Sites fill quickly on festival weekends, and reservations several weeks out are advised.
Summer is hot and humid, with daytime highs frequently in the mid 90s Fahrenheit. RV parks with shaded pine cover and pool access are preferred, and early morning is the practical window for outdoor activity. Thunderstorms are common but usually brief. Fall reopens comfortable travel weather from late September through November, with cooler nights and a second wave of railroad and event traffic.
Winter is short and generally mild, though cold fronts can push overnight lows below freezing. October is the wettest month on average, and the region records only a trace of snow annually. Most Elkhart-area RV parks stay open year-round, but some seasonal music and festival programming pauses between December and February.
How to book an RV site near Elkhart
The parks listed near Elkhart are privately operated, and each takes reservations directly by phone or through its own website. Palestine RV Park, Whippletree RV Resort, Purple Peacock RV Resort, and Salmon Lake RV and Music Park all handle bookings independently rather than through a central agency.
Palestine Campground - Texas State Railroad is operated in connection with the railroad and books through the Texas State Railroad reservation desk, which also handles train tickets. For state park alternatives in the wider area, such as Mission Tejas, reservations run through Texas Parks and Wildlife at texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com. National forest campgrounds in Davy Crockett National Forest are booked through recreation.gov.
Book at least four to six weeks ahead for spring weekends, railroad event dates, and Salmon Lake festival weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the area are generally RV-friendly. US 287 and US 79 are the main routes into Elkhart and Palestine, both wide and well maintained. Rural county roads leading to some lake sites can narrow and include low-clearance branches, so drivers of taller Class A and fifth-wheel rigs should check park directions before departing.
Full hookups, including 30 and 50 amp service, are standard at Palestine RV Park, Whippletree RV Resort, and Purple Peacock RV Resort. Purple Peacock is a clothing-optional adults-only resort, which is not suitable for family bookings. Salmon Lake offers a mix of hookup and primitive sites geared to music-festival stays.
Cell coverage is reliable near Palestine and along US 287. Expect gaps in the deeper forested areas east toward the Neches. Grocery, fuel, and propane are readily available in Palestine.
