Camping near Ferris, Texas
Ferris sits along Interstate 45 in Ellis County, about 20 miles south of downtown Dallas and roughly equidistant from Waxahachie to the west and Ennis to the south. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want access to Dallas-Fort Worth attractions without paying metro-area rates, plus easy day trips into the farmland and small towns of North Central Texas.
RV options within a short drive include Rockett RV Ranch, a 36-spot park in Palmer that sits between I-35 in Waxahachie and I-45 in Palmer, and is a short drive from Waxahachie, Ennis, Ferris, Red Oak, Lancaster, Wilmer, and Hutchins. Nearby alternatives include The Range Vintage Trailer Resort, Dallas Shady Oaks RV Park, Northside RV Resort, and Dallas Hi Ho RV Park, giving travelers a mix of full-hookup private parks along the I-45 and I-35 corridors.
For state-park camping, the closest option is Cedar Hill State Park at 1570 FM 1382 in Cedar Hill, roughly 30 miles northwest on Joe Pool Lake. Reservations are handled through Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Things to do around Ferris
Cedar Hill State Park is the main public-land draw within an hour of Ferris. The 1,850-acre park sits on the northeastern shore of Joe Pool Lake and offers lake access, hiking, shoreline fishing, boat ramps, and swimming areas. The park is prone to flood-related closures of certain areas, so check current park alerts before visiting, and day-use visitors should reserve a day pass in advance for weekends and holidays.
Waxahachie, a short drive west, is known for Victorian courthouse-square architecture and the annual Scarborough Renaissance Festival held each spring. Ennis, south on I-45, hosts the official Texas Bluebonnet Trail in April. Downtown Dallas, Fair Park, and the Dallas Arboretum are all reachable in under an hour for a day trip. Anglers can also target Bardwell Lake and Lake Ray Hubbard, both within easy towing distance.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Ferris area. March through May brings mild temperatures, wildflower blooms along the Ennis Bluebonnet Trail, and the busiest weekends at Cedar Hill State Park. October and November offer cooler nights and lower humidity. Both shoulder seasons see the region's heaviest and most frequent thunderstorms, so weather-related trail and boat-ramp closures do occur.
Summer temperatures across the Dallas-Fort Worth area are extreme. NOAA 1991-2020 normals show Dallas-Fort Worth averaging about 20 days per year at or above 100 degrees, with July and August highs in the mid-90s and overnight lows often staying in the mid-70s. Full hookups with 30/50-amp service are essential for running air conditioning through summer stays.
Winter is mild but variable. DFW averages roughly 29 freezes per season based on NOAA normals, and occasional ice storms can shut down travel for a day or two. Freezing overnight lows can occur anytime from November through March.

Booking and reservations
Private RV parks near Ferris, including Rockett RV Ranch, The Range Vintage Trailer Resort, Dallas Shady Oaks RV Park, Northside RV Resort, and Dallas Hi Ho RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Rockett RV Ranch offers daily, weekly, and monthly agreements, which is typical of the private parks in this corridor. Book several weeks ahead for spring weekends, Scarborough Renaissance Festival dates, and the Ennis bluebonnet peak.
For Cedar Hill State Park, reservations go through the Texas State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Most overnight camping reservations open five months in advance at 8 a.m. Central time, one of the shorter booking windows among major state park systems, so plan to book the moment your window opens for weekend and holiday stays. Day-use passes can be reserved up to one month before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
The private parks near Ferris are pull-in-and-plug-in style rather than destination resorts. Expect concrete or gravel pads and reliable 30/50-amp service across the private parks in the corridor.
Cedar Hill State Park has five camping areas: Shady Ridge, Eagle Ford, Lakeview, Hog Wallow, and Coyote Crossing. Full-hookup sites with 30- and 50-amp service are concentrated in the Eagle Ford and Lakeview areas, with additional full-hookup and water-electric sites spread across the other loops. Restrooms with hot showers serve all camping areas. Check the park's active alerts page before arrival for construction, flooding, or trail closures.

No CDL or special endorsement is required for personal-use RVs in Texas. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid driver's license, verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? For most renters heading out for a Cedar Hill State Park weekend or a Texas Motorplex race weekend, it covers what you need.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change after I book my Ferris RV rental?
RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you're never locked in the moment you click confirm. If life happens, a work conflict, a family event, or a Texas thunderstorm rolling through Ellis County, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. Book earlier rather than later for the most flexible refund windows, and reach out to RVezy support directly if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Ferris?
Yes. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Ferris are available on RVezy: just turn on the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll instantly see hosts who welcome dogs. Cedar Hill State Park, about 25 miles northwest of Ferris, allows leashed pets on most trails and at campsites. Pack a tie-out, collapsible water bowl, and proof of vaccinations. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or size limits so there are no surprises at pickup.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cedar-hillCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Ferris?
Yes, RV delivery in Ferris is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts in the Ferris and greater Dallas area will drive the RV directly to your campground, vacation rental, or home, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery spots include Cedar Hill State Park, Texas Motorplex in Ennis, and Loyd Park on Joe Pool Lake. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host to confirm the delivery fee, which is typically based on round-trip mileage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ferris%2C%20TexasHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Ferris, TX?
Ferris is a sweet spot for a Texas RV road trip. Downtown Dallas is about 20 miles north, Fort Worth is roughly 50 miles northwest, Waco is about 90 miles south on I-35, Austin is roughly 200 miles south, Houston is about 240 miles southeast on I-45, and the Gulf Coast at Galveston is around 290 miles. Many hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles available at a per-mile rate (commonly $0.25 to $0.50). Looking for an RV rental with unlimited mileage? Filter for it on RVezy or message hosts directly. Plan fuel stops in advance since diesel pumps in rural East Texas can be sparse.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ferris%2C%20TexasWhere are the best campgrounds near Ferris, TX?
You have great options. Top campgrounds near Ferris include Cedar Hill State Park (about 25 miles northwest, electric and water hookups, lake access, and trails on Joe Pool Lake), Loyd Park on Joe Pool Lake (full hookups and swim beach), Cleburne State Park (about 55 miles southwest with a spring-fed lake), and Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton (about 75 miles east, ideal for First Monday Trade Days). The Texas Motorplex in Ennis also hosts RV camping during major NHRA race weekends. Cedar Hill and Cleburne book up months ahead for weekends, so reserve through Texas State Parks as soon as your dates are set.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cedar-hillWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Ferris?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV camping in Ferris. From mid-March through May, daytime highs sit roughly between 67°F and 85°F, with the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails (Ennis is the official Bluebonnet City of Texas) in peak bloom in April. September through early November brings 75°F to 88°F days, cool evenings, and fewer mosquitoes. Summer (June through August) is genuinely hot, with average highs of 90°F to 96°F and heat index regularly above 100°F, so plan for early-morning drives and AC-heavy campsites. Winters are mild (50s by day, 30s and 40s by night), perfect for a quiet, low-crowd Texas getaway.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Ferris a good idea for first-timers?
You're going to do great, and Ferris is actually a fantastic launching pad for a first time renting an RV. The roads around Ellis County are flat, wide, and well-marked, with I-45, I-35E, and US-287 providing easy on-ramps to the rest of Texas. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, hookups, the awning, the generator, and the dump valves. You can also ask the host to deliver the RV so you skip the driving learning curve entirely. Pro tip: start with a smaller Class C or travel trailer for your first trip, and pick a nearby destination like Cedar Hill State Park (under an hour) to build confidence.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rvsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my Ferris RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat tire on I-45, lose power at a campsite near Lake Bardwell, or run into a slide-out issue at Cedar Hill State Park, one phone call gets help on the way. Roadside assistance covers things like towing, jump starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, since they know their RV best. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Snap photos of the RV at pickup so any pre-existing issues are documented.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ferris RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Crossing into Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, or New Mexico is generally welcomed by most hosts, making Ferris an excellent jumping-off point for a multi-state RV road trip. Popular routes include heading east on I-20 to Louisiana, north toward the Ozarks, or west to Big Bend National Park (about 600 miles). Message the host before booking to confirm your route and any mileage policies. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage does not extend across the border. Stick to U.S. travel and you have a continent's worth of adventure within reach.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Ferris RV trip is straightforward. Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 mpg, Class C motorhomes run 10 to 14 mpg, campervans (Class B) get 16 to 20 mpg, and trucks pulling travel trailers usually land around 9 to 12 mpg. Texas gas prices typically sit below the national average. Buc-ee's, Love's, and Pilot Flying J truck stops along I-45 offer easy RV access. A 500-mile weekend trip in a Class C usually runs $120 to $200 in fuel, often a cheaper family vacation than flying plus hotels.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Ferris?
Booking ahead is the secret to a stress-free trip. Texas State Parks (including Cedar Hill and Cleburne) accept reservations up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and popular weekends (spring break, Memorial Day, July 4th, and bluebonnet season in April) fill within hours of opening. Private parks like Mill Creek Ranch Resort and campgrounds tied to Texas Motorplex events book 2 to 6 months ahead for race and festival weekends. For midweek stays or off-season trips, you can often grab a site a week or two out. Set a calendar reminder exactly 5 months before your target date and book online when the system opens.
texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Ferris and the Dallas metro?
Driving an RV around Ferris is manageable. Interstate 45 runs right through town and connects you to Dallas (about 20 miles north) and Houston (about 240 miles south) on flat, multi-lane highway. Watch out for the I-45 and I-20 interchange near Hutchins during rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m.), and avoid downtown Dallas tunnels and parking garages where height clearances can be low. Spring brings the occasional severe thunderstorm and hail, so check the National Weather Service Fort Worth forecast before driving. Take US-287 or TX-34 to bypass Dallas traffic when heading west to Waxahachie or Cleburne.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Ferris?
Local campgrounds make RV life easy. Cedar Hill State Park offers 30/50-amp electric and water hookups (no sewer at sites, but a dump station is on-site), restrooms, hot showers, and a swim beach. Loyd Park on Joe Pool Lake provides 30/50-amp full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Cleburne State Park has water and electric sites plus a centralized dump station. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cedar-hill/park_info/facilitiesWhat's inside a typical Ferris RV rental? Beds, kitchen, bathroom?
A typical motorhome rental in Ferris listed on RVezy comes fully equipped: a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 4 to 8 people (bunks, convertible dinette, or sofa beds), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, stovetop, sink, and cookware, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Most include AC, furnace, propane, a generator or shore-power hookup, leveling jacks, an outdoor awning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, and outdoor chairs. Check the listing's amenities tab and message the host to confirm anything specific to your trip, like a coffee maker, high chair, or pet bowls.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ferris%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Customizing your campervan or motorhome rental in Ferris is part of the fun. Popular add-ons hosts offer include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes ($25 to $50), generator use ($5 to $15 per hour), bike racks, outdoor grills, fire pits, and unlimited mileage upgrades. Most hosts in the Ferris and Ennis area set pickup windows in the early afternoon and return by late morning, though many are flexible if you ask. Delivery to Cedar Hill State Park, Texas Motorplex, or your home is commonly $2 to $4 per mile round trip. Bundle add-ons at booking, since hosts often discount packages compared to adding items at pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ferris%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Ferris on RVezy, your total (rental fee, protection plan, service fees, and any add-ons) is charged to your credit or debit card through the platform, so you're never handing cash or checks to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card a few days before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV. It is released back to you after the trip, usually within a few days, as long as the RV is returned in the same condition. Take a short walkaround video at pickup and dropoff to document condition and streamline deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow can I find a cheap RV rental in Ferris without sacrificing quality?
Scoring a cheap RV rental in Ferris is easier than most people expect. Travel trailers (towed by your own truck or SUV) are the most affordable option, often starting around $60 to $125 per night with delivery and setup available. Book Sunday-through-Thursday stays, avoid Texas Motorplex NHRA race weekends and Ennis Bluebonnet Festival weekends in April, and look for hosts offering 10 to 25 percent weekly or monthly discounts. Use RVezy's price filter to sort low-to-high, and check listings within a 30-mile radius (Waxahachie, Red Oak, Ennis, and South Dallas) for more options. Newer Class C rentals sometimes cost less than older Class A motorhomes and are easier to drive too.
