Campgrounds and RV parks near Garrison, TX

Fishing drives most trips to the area. Lake Murvaul has an excellent and highly utilized largemouth bass fishery and continues to produce bass over 8 pounds, along with strong crappie and channel catfish populations. The lake covers 3,800 acres with a clean swimming area, restrooms, a playground, three fishing piers, a fish cleaning house, and free boat launch ramps, and seventy-five shaded RV sites include full hookups for water, electricity, and sewer, all with 30/50 amp service. At Camp Tonkawa Springs RV Park and Campground, a spring-fed pond is the main draw for swimmers and families on hot afternoons. Nacogdoches, about twenty minutes south, adds history museums, Stephen F. Austin State University, and grocery runs. Carthage, to the north, is home to the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and the Tex Ritter Museum, the Panola County Veterans Museum and Memorial, and the Old Panola County Jail, now preserved as a museum.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in East Texas. March through May brings mild days, wildflowers along the highways, and active fishing on nearby lakes. Although largemouth bass fishing on Lake Murvaul is good throughout the year, the most productive months are January through March, so cool-weather anglers plan around late winter and early spring. October and November cool off quickly, thin the crowds, and rank among the most comfortable months for hiking and lake time. Summer is hot and humid. In Nacogdoches, the summers are hot and oppressive, the winters are short, cold, and wet, and it is partly cloudy year round. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from May through August, and heat indexes routinely push past 100 degrees in July and August. Shaded pine-canopy sites and rigs with strong air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Winter stays mild by national standards but wet, with occasional cold snaps. Many East Texas RV parks stay open through the season and pick up snowbird traffic passing between the Midwest and the Gulf Coast.

Expect small, quiet, tree-shaded parks rather than resort-style destinations. Sites tend to be level gravel or grass with 30/50 amp hookups, water, and sewer. Big-rig access is straightforward at parks located directly on US 59, while back-road parks may involve narrow county roads and low-hanging branches. Cell service is inconsistent under the pine canopy, and park WiFi varies in quality. Grocery, fuel, and propane are easiest to find in Nacogdoches, Carthage, and Timpson, and small stores in Garrison cover basics. Wildlife is part of the experience. Deer are common inside and around fenced campgrounds, and mosquitoes and ticks are active from spring through early fall, so repellent and screen doors matter. Burn bans are declared by county in dry stretches, so check with the office before lighting a campfire.
