Campgrounds and RV parks near Greenville, TX

Lake Tawakoni State Park, about 15 miles southeast of Greenville, anchors most outdoor itineraries. The park sits on the south shore of a 37,879-acre reservoir on the Sabine River, with a four-lane boat ramp, roughly five miles of trails through post oak woodlands, and more than 200 bird species recorded. Catfish, white bass, and largemouth bass fishing draw anglers year-round. Cooper Lake State Park, northeast of town, offers two separate units with swim beaches, equestrian trails, and quieter shorelines. In town, families head to the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum and Splash Kingdom Waterpark. Downtown Greenville has a walkable historic core with local restaurants. For day trips, the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex sits within an hour by interstate, putting zoos, professional sports, and large shopping districts in easy reach without giving up a quieter campsite at night.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV trips around Greenville. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the mid-60s to around 80°F and wildflowers peak, but May is also the wettest month, with frequent thunderstorms and the heart of North Texas severe-weather season. Travelers should plan for the chance of hail, high wind, and tornado watches, and pick parks with sturdy hookups and storm shelters or nearby substantial buildings. Summer is hot and humid. June through August averages highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s, with August routinely topping 94°F. Shade and 50-amp service for air conditioning matter. Lake Tawakoni State Park reaches capacity on summer weekends and holidays. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and October as a notably wet month. Winter is mild but variable, with occasional freezes and the rare ice event; most private parks stay open, while state park demand drops sharply outside holiday weekends.

The local terrain is gently rolling Blackland Prairie transitioning into post oak woodlands, with farmland, ranches, and reservoirs rather than mountains or dense forest. Most private parks near Greenville offer level pull-through and back-in sites with 30/50-amp service, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi, and many welcome big rigs over 40 feet. Cell coverage along the I-30 and US-69 corridors is reliable. Burn bans are common in summer and during drought, so propane stoves and enclosed grills are the safer default. Mosquitoes are active from late spring into fall near the lakes, and severe weather can arrive quickly in spring; check forecasts daily and know the location of the nearest shelter. Lake levels on Tawakoni can fluctuate several feet, which affects shoreline access at the state park.
