Campgrounds and RV parks near Gunter, TX

Lake Texoma is the main draw. It is one of the largest reservoirs in the United States and the 12th-largest US Army Corps of Engineers lake, and it is known as the Striper Capital of the World, one of the few reservoirs in the nation where striped bass reproduce naturally. Marinas and public boat ramps are scattered around the lake, so trailered boats and kayaks are easy to launch. Eisenhower State Park, about an hour northeast of Gunter, has ATV trails approximately 8 acres in size that are suitable for novice riders, located across from the Fossil Ridge Camping Area, with ATVs trailered to the trailhead and an OHV permit required. It also has hiking and biking trails along limestone bluffs, fishing piers, and a swimming cove. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and the surrounding wildlife areas draw thousands of Canada and snow geese, shorebirds, ducks, and bald eagles during migration, making the west arm of the lake a strong stop for birdwatching in fall and winter. Closer to town, historic downtown McKinney offers shopping, restaurants, and easy family outings on a rainy day.

Spring, from March through May, is one of the most popular windows for camping around Gunter. Wildflowers bloom, daytime temperatures are comfortable, and lake water begins to warm enough for swimming by late spring. April and May are typically the wettest months, and North Texas thunderstorms can produce hail, high wind, and localized flooding, so travelers should watch forecasts closely. Summer runs hot. The area has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers featuring average July highs near 96°F, so shaded sites and reliable air conditioning matter. Summer is peak season at Corps of Engineers campgrounds and at Eisenhower State Park, and weekends fill early. Fall, from September through November, brings reliably comfortable daytime highs in the 65 to 80°F range, cleared summer crowds, and strong striped bass fishing. Winter camping is available but limited. Some Corps campgrounds close loops or shut off water and shower facilities in the off-season, while private RV parks around Gunter generally stay open year-round with full hookups.

Private parks around Gunter tend to be small and quiet, with full hookups, gravel or paved pads, and gated or keycode access at some properties. Amenities vary, so RV renters should confirm 50-amp service, sewer, pull-through length, and pet policies with the park before arrival if traveling in a larger rig. At Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Texoma, entrance gates open at 6 a.m. and lock at 10 p.m., with quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., check-in by 6 p.m. and check-out by 4 p.m. Maximum occupancy is 15 people per site and only one RV is allowed per site. Eisenhower State Park charges a per-person day-use fee in addition to camping. The county is under a quarantine to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer, so movement of firewood is restricted and visitors should buy firewood where they burn it.
