Campgrounds and RV parks near Haskell, TX

Lake Stamford, about twelve miles southeast of Haskell, was formed in 1953 by Stamford Dam on Paint Creek and covers roughly 5,124 acres as an eight-mile-long reservoir. Recreation includes picnicking, fishing, and boating at Sico Scott Memorial and Lake Stamford parks. Catfish, largemouth bass, and crappie draw anglers, and water levels can fluctuate significantly year to year. An hour southeast, Fort Griffin State Historic Site combines camping with frontier ruins. Preserved features include the mess hall, barracks, settler's store, bakery, powder magazine, and a hand-dug well, and the site is home to the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd. Minimal light pollution from surrounding ranches produces dark night skies, and the site hosts periodic stargazing events. Abilene, roughly 50 miles south, adds a zoo, storybook sculpture trail, and Dyess Air Force Base attractions for a day trip.

The area has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild, occasionally cold winters. The warmest month is typically July, with average highs in the mid-90s Fahrenheit, and the coldest is January, with highs near 58 to 60 degrees. Abilene, the nearest reporting station, averages about 25 to 26 inches of precipitation per year. March through mid-May and October through mid-November are generally the most comfortable travel windows. Spring brings the strongest thunderstorm activity, with hail and occasional tornadoes possible from April into June. Rangers at Fort Griffin advise watching the weather in spring and summer, since the Brazos can rise quickly when it rains heavily. Summer heat regularly exceeds 100 degrees, so RV travelers should confirm working air conditioning and plan mid-day breaks. Fall is often the best all-around season: warm days, cool nights, low humidity, and lower campground demand. Winter camping is feasible; hard freezes occur, and RVers should be ready to disconnect and drain water hoses during cold snaps.

Expect small-town Texas: quiet streets, limited late-night dining, and long open highways between stops. Cell coverage is generally reliable in Haskell and along U.S. 277 and 380 but can drop off around Lake Stamford and on ranch roads. Fuel and grocery runs are easiest in Haskell, Stamford, or Abilene. Campgrounds in the area lean utilitarian. At Fort Griffin, sites are level and accessible for most RV sizes, with shade trees, picnic tables, fire rings, campfire grills, walking trails, and a quiet setting along a fork of the Brazos River. The campground area has men's and women's restrooms with showers, a playground, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pit, basketball court, and river access at two of the sites. Wildlife includes deer, longhorns at Fort Griffin, and snakes in warmer months, so keep kids and pets close on trails.
