Hickory Creek camping overview
Hickory Creek sits on the southwest shore of Lewisville Lake in Denton County, roughly 35 miles north of downtown Dallas along the I-35E corridor. The nearly 30,000-acre reservoir draws steady summer traffic thanks to warm water and productive fishing, and the town's location puts RV travelers within short driving distance of both Lewisville Lake and Grapevine Lake camping.
The area mixes a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground, city-leased day-use parks, and privately operated RV resorts. Hickory Creek Park, the only Corps-run campground on Lewisville Lake, is known for spacious sites, mature shade trees, and quick access to the freeway. Nearby options such as Post Oak Place RV Park, Sandy Lake MH and RV Resort, and Meadowmere Park round out the choices closer to the DFW metroplex, and The Vineyards Campground and Cabins offers a lakefront alternative on Grapevine Lake to the south.
Most visitors come for lake access, but the surrounding trail network is a real draw. Hikers and bikers explore 50 miles of natural surface and paved trails around Lewisville Lake, and Grapevine's historic downtown adds shopping, wineries, and family attractions within easy reach.
Things to do near Hickory Creek
Water recreation drives most trips. Lewisville Lake visitors picnic, swim, boat, fish, and relax along the shoreline, and on-site boat ramps at Hickory Creek Park, Hidden Cove Park, and The Vineyards Campground and Cabins make launching straightforward. Anglers target bass, catfish, and crappie in the lake's coves and around bridge structure.
On land, the connected trail system around the lake offers walking, running, and mountain biking on paved and natural surfaces. Families staying at The Vineyards Campground and Cabins can walk to a private sandy beach and reach downtown Grapevine's shops, restaurants, and wineries within minutes. Meadowmere Park adds shoreline access on Grapevine Lake, while Post Oak Place RV Park and Sandy Lake MH and RV Resort work well as bases for exploring the wider DFW metroplex.

The Hickory Creek area supports year-round camping, but conditions shift sharply by season. Spring brings the greenest scenery and the heaviest rainfall, with thunderstorms and gusty lake winds common from March through May. May is typically the wettest month, and lake levels can rise quickly enough to close lower-lying sites at lakefront parks. This is also the fastest-filling reservation window; weekend sites for early summer often disappear well before Memorial Day.
Summer is peak season. Daytime highs frequently reach the mid to upper 90s, the lake stays warm enough for swimming, and every campsite at Hickory Creek Park has electric and water hookups, so campers can run air conditioning through the heat. Weekend and holiday crowds spike, and shaded and lakefront sites go first.
Fall cools quickly and delivers some of the most pleasant camping weather of the year, with lower humidity and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter is mild by national standards, but overnight lows can dip below freezing during Arctic intrusions, so RV renters should be prepared to disconnect and drain hoses on the coldest nights.

How to book a campground near Hickory Creek
Reservation systems vary by operator. Hickory Creek Park, the Corps of Engineers campground on Lewisville Lake, books through Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance, and campers are allotted 14 days in any 30-day period, so back-to-back long stays are not permitted. Reservations can also be made by phone through the Recreation.gov call center.
City and private parks use their own portals. The Vineyards Campground and Cabins accepts reservations up to twelve months in advance, with camping fees for the full stay due at the time of booking. Meadowmere Park, Post Oak Place RV Park, Sandy Lake MH and RV Resort, and Hidden Cove Park take bookings directly through each operator's website or front desk.
For summer weekends and any holiday, book as far ahead as the system allows. Weekday arrivals and shoulder-season trips offer the widest availability.
What to expect on arrival
Most area campgrounds have gated entries with posted check-in windows. At Hickory Creek Park, check-in starts at 3:00 pm with no early check-in, early arrivals may be asked to wait outside the park, the gate closes at 10 pm with no entry or re-entry until 6 am, the exit gate opens only in emergencies, and there is no gate code. Plan road time accordingly, especially if towing.
Sites at Hickory Creek Park are paved, with picnic tables, fire rings, lantern hooks, and 50-amp electric plus water hookups; sewer is handled at a dump station rather than at each site. The Vineyards Campground and Cabins offers concrete pads with full hookups and WiFi. Private resorts such as Post Oak Place RV Park and Sandy Lake MH and RV Resort typically provide full hookups at paved or gravel sites.
Expect background noise. Aircraft from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport pass overhead throughout the day, and I-35 traffic is audible from some Hickory Creek sites. Deer and songbirds are common in the wooded loops.

Most beginners pick a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer, both easy to handle on I-35E and FM-2181. If city driving makes you nervous, book delivery and skip the highway entirely. RVezy support is available 24/7 by phone or chat. Pro tip: do your first practice loop in the Hickory Creek Park campground roads, they're wide and low-traffic, perfect for getting comfortable.

A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, follow the mileage and generator-hour limits, and return with the fuel and tanks as agreed. Pro tip: keep all receipts for propane and dump-station fees, hosts often reimburse.

Hickory Creek Park, Sycamore Bend, Pilot Knoll, and nearby Lake Park in Lewisville all welcome overnight RVs with reservations. For a quick supply stop, the Walmart in Corinth (just south on I-35E) and the Buc-ee's in Denton are popular daytime parking spots with room for big rigs. Pro tip: if your host offers delivery, you skip the parking question entirely, they bring the RV to your campsite and pick it up when you're done.
