Campgrounds and RV parks near Hooks, TX

Wright Patman Lake is the main outdoor draw, offering boating, fishing, water-skiing, and a designated swim area at Atlanta State Park. The state park has about five miles of hiking trails, including a short nature trail, plus ranger-led programs on geocaching, birding, and Caddo Indian history. The park also features a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits, a playground, and an amphitheater for group events. In Texarkana, families can tour the Draughon-Moore Ace of Clubs House and explore the twin downtowns that straddle the Texas-Arkansas state line. The Three States marker, where a visitor can stand in Texas and Arkansas while touching Louisiana, is a popular quick stop. Jefferson, a short drive south, adds antebellum homes, a narrow-gauge train, and riverboat rides for a half-day excursion.

Northeast Texas has a humid subtropical climate, and the camping calendar reflects that. Spring brings wildflowers, dogwood blooms, and the most active severe-weather pattern, with thunderstorms moving through the region from March into May. May is typically the wettest month, but it is also one of the best windows for hiking and lakeside outings before heat sets in. Summer is the peak season at Atlanta State Park and Wright Patman Lake, with hot, humid days and warm nights well suited to swimming and boating. Sites fill quickly on summer and holiday weekends, and reservations are strongly recommended. Fall brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and color in the pine and hardwood forests, making it the most comfortable stretch for hiking and longer outdoor days. Winter is mild compared with much of the country and is a strong window for bird-watching at the lake, where bald eagles and white pelicans are sometimes seen. Occasional cold snaps and wet, gray stretches do occur, so checking park alerts and weather before arrival is worth the minute, particularly for tent campers.

Most private parks near Hooks are pull-through, full-hookup setups oriented to highway travelers and longer stays. Texarkana KOA Journey, for example, offers 66 sites with a maximum length of about 90 feet, plus camping cabins, a swimming pool, laundry, and a dog park, all just off I-30 at Exit 223. Atlanta State Park offers 58 campsites, all with water and electricity and 14 with sewer hookups, set under pines and hardwoods on Wright Patman Lake. The park has two boat ramps, a fish-cleaning station, a playground, and an amphitheater. Buy firewood locally rather than hauling your own, since East Texas counties periodically fall under pest-related firewood restrictions. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-30 corridor and can be patchier inside the state park.
