Camping near Jacksboro, Texas
Jacksboro sits in North Texas where the Cross Timbers meet the rolling prairies, roughly an hour and a half northwest of Fort Worth. The town is anchored by Fort Richardson State Park, a National Historic Landmark that once served as the US Army's northernmost and largest frontier outpost in Texas. RV renters use Jacksboro as a base for lake fishing, hiking, and history-focused day trips without the crowds of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
Campground options range from a full-service state park inside town to private RV parks scattered across Jack and Wise counties. Main - Fort Richardson State Park and Historic Site offers hookup sites, restrooms with showers, a dump station, and direct trail access. Nearby private options include Hidden Lake RV Ranch, Mitchell Resort and RV Park, Texas Rose RV Resort, and Bay Landing RV Campground, which serve travelers looking for longer stays or lake access.
Most sites accommodate mid-size Class C and travel-trailer rentals, though rig-length limits vary by campground, so confirm site dimensions at booking.
Things to do around Jacksboro
Fort Richardson is the main draw. Visitors can explore seven restored original buildings, including the post hospital, officers quarters, and bakery, along with replicas of the barracks that hold an interpretive center. Historic buildings are open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for self-guided tours, with guided tours offered on select weekdays.
Outdoor recreation centers on two lakes and a long trailway. Twelve miles of trails are open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, and the Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway winds along Lost Creek and the shores of two lakes, ending at the north park unit. TPWD stocks Quarry Lake with bass, catfish, and, in winter months, trout, while Lake Jacksboro at North Park offers shore fishing and a kayak launch. North Park also has a sand beach, covered tables, water spigots, and restrooms, though there are no lifeguards and no showers at that unit.

Spring and fall are the practical windows for RV travel in this part of North Texas. March through May brings wildflowers, mild days, and the highest rainfall of the year, so travelers should watch for thunderstorms and possible flash flooding along creek-side sites. Fall shoulder months, roughly late September through November, deliver cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable trail conditions.
Summer is hot. August in Jacksboro sees average highs near 96°F with lows near 75°F, and heat advisories are common. RV renters running rooftop air conditioning should book sites with 30- or 50-amp hookups and plenty of shade, particularly at the state park's West and East Camping Loops, where hookups are concentrated.
Winter is short but variable. January through March, November, and December can see snowfall, though annual accumulation averages only about an inch and a half. Freezes are possible, so winterize water systems and confirm that private parks have working freeze protection before arrival.

Booking a site near Jacksboro
Sites at Main - Fort Richardson State Park and Historic Site are reserved through the Texas State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Booking windows vary by site type: full-hookup and electric campsites can typically be reserved up to five months in advance, while some tent and primitive categories open on shorter windows. A daily entrance fee applies per person 13 and older in addition to the site fee.
Private parks such as Hidden Lake RV Ranch, Mitchell Resort and RV Park, Texas Rose RV Resort, and Bay Landing RV Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone, with policies on deposits, cancellations, and rig-length limits varying by property.
For the state park, no-shows who fail to check in by noon of the day after the scheduled arrival will have the rest of the reservation canceled, so late arrivals should call ahead.
What to expect on arrival
Fort Richardson has no entrance gates, and office hours run Sunday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. After-hours arrivals can proceed to any site without a rented sign hanging from the electric pedestal, then register at Park Headquarters the next morning.
Hookup availability is limited at the state park. There are only four full-hookup sites in the West Camping Loop, plus additional water and electric sites across the West and East loops that accommodate a range of rig sizes, so reservations are strongly recommended during peak months.
North Park, three miles from the main unit on Lake Jacksboro, has a swim beach, fishing pier, and kayak launch. That unit has a restroom without a shower and water-only, single-axle-trailer or tent campsites, so travelers needing full utilities should book the main loops.
