Campgrounds and RV parks near Jefferson, TX

The signature outing is a paddle or boat tour through the cypress swamps of Caddo Lake, home to the largest naturally formed flooded cypress forest in the country. Caddo Lake State Park rents canoes at the park office, and experienced paddlers can follow marked routes such as Hell's Half Acre Paddling Trail. Fishing for more than 70 species, birding, and short hikes on the park's 2.5 miles of trails round out the day. In town, Big Cypress Bayou riverboat tours run from the Turning Basin with narrated trips through moss-draped cypress. The Historic Jefferson Railway operates scenic excursions along the bayou, and the Jefferson Historical Museum, antique shops on the brick streets, and horse-drawn carriage tours fill an easy afternoon. Ghost tours through antebellum buildings are a common evening add-on.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. March through May brings mild temperatures, wildflowers, and active wildlife on the bayou, though May is also the rainiest month, with heavy thunderstorms possible. Weekends fill early at Caddo Lake State Park, and the park often reaches capacity, so day-use passes are worth pre-purchasing. Summer is hot and humid. Daytime highs regularly reach the low 90s, insects are abundant, and afternoon storms are common. Bug spray is a near-requirement for anyone camping near the water. Early-morning paddles and boat tours are the practical way to enjoy the lake in July and August. Winter is short and generally mild, with January average lows around 48 degrees at Caddo Lake and only occasional hard freezes. First freeze typically arrives in mid-November and last freeze in mid-March, so shoulder-season RV trips are viable if travelers watch cold fronts. Cabins and the group recreation hall at Caddo Lake State Park close annually on Christmas Day, and additional scheduled maintenance closures occur during off-peak weeks.

Expect a wooded, low-country setting. Sites at Caddo Lake State Park sit under a dense canopy of pine and cypress, which limits satellite reception and can restrict access for taller Class A rigs on some interior loops. The park has 46 campsites ranging from water-only to full hookup, so travelers needing sewer should book early or stay at a private park in Jefferson and day-trip to the lake. Cell coverage is reliable in town and spotty at the lake. Buy firewood locally rather than transporting it, since Texas restricts firewood movement to slow invasive pests. Wildlife includes alligators in the bayou and water moccasins along the banks, which is worth flagging to kids before launching a kayak. The park has no entrance gate, but the office closes at 4:45 p.m., and late arrivals must register at the office by 10 a.m. the following morning.
