Campgrounds and RV parks near Kaufman, TX

Lake activity is the main draw. Lake Tawakoni is a large reservoir on the Sabine River popular for catfish, bass, and crappie, with a designated swimming beach and boat ramp access at Lake Tawakoni State Park. Joe Pool Lake, reached via Cedar Hill State Park, adds swimming, paddling, and boating options closer to the metroplex. On-land options include hiking and mountain biking at Cedar Hill State Park's DORBA Trail system, birding in Lake Tawakoni's post oak woodlands, and day trips to Canton for First Monday Trade Days, a large open-air market held monthly. Families can add Six Flags Over Texas, the Dallas Zoo, or AT&T Stadium tours, all within an hour by tow vehicle.

Spring, from March through May, is the most popular RV season around Kaufman. Wildflowers including bluebonnets bloom along Texas highways, temperatures are mild, and state parks fill quickly on weekends. Spring is also the peak severe-weather window: north central Texas sits at the southern end of Tornado Alley, and April and May bring the highest tornado and hail risk of the year. Summer is hot and humid. July and August highs average in the mid-90s Fahrenheit, and stretches above 100 are common. Full-hookup sites with 50-amp service and shade are worth prioritizing for air-conditioning load. Lake activity peaks, but sites at Cedar Hill and Lake Tawakoni state parks book out well in advance. Fall, roughly late September through November, brings the most comfortable weather and lighter crowds after Labor Day. October is typically the wettest month of the year. Winter is generally mild, with occasional freezes and rare snow or ice events; state-park facilities in the area remain open year-round, and private parks near Kaufman often offer monthly rates during the November through February off-peak window.

Private RV parks in the Kaufman and Terrell area lean utilitarian: level gravel or concrete pads, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, and easy highway access rather than heavy tree cover. Cell coverage on the major carriers is generally strong along US-175 and I-20. At Cedar Hill State Park, developed sites offer water and electricity, a portion also add sewer, and restrooms with hot showers are nearby. Most sites are back-in rather than pull-through. Several neighboring counties, including Dallas, Rockwall, and Navarro, fall under a Texas emerald ash borer quarantine, so buy firewood locally rather than hauling it in. Summer heat, mosquitoes near the lakes, and sudden spring thunderstorms are the main things to prepare for.
