Campgrounds and RV parks near Knollwood, TX

Fishing is the headline activity. Lake Texoma is one of the few U.S. reservoirs where striped bass reproduce naturally, and largemouth, smallmouth, white bass, hybrid stripers, crappie, and catfish are all common catches. Eisenhower State Park has two fishing piers, a boat ramp, and fish-cleaning stations, and a fishing license is not required when fishing from the shore or a pier inside a Texas state park. On land, the park offers more than four miles of walking and biking trails along limestone bluffs, a swimming cove near Elm Point, and a dedicated OHV trail system near the Fossil Ridge camping area. Kids can pick up a free Junior Ranger activity journal at park headquarters. Off-lake, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge draws migratory waterfowl including geese, and the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site and Red River Railroad Museum in Denison add rainy-day options.

Eisenhower State Park is open year-round but gets busy from spring through fall. Late spring is the most scenic window for hiking, with wildflowers along the trails and lake temperatures warm enough for swimming by the end of the season. April and May are typically the wettest months, and severe-thunderstorm activity is highest in this stretch, so RV renters should watch forecasts carefully. Summer is peak season on Lake Texoma. Daytime highs regularly top 90 degrees, humidity climbs from June through August, and lake traffic, marinas, and swim coves are all at their busiest. Reservations at Eisenhower and popular private parks fill well in advance for summer and holiday weekends. Fall brings cooler evenings, better fishing, and lighter crowds. Winter is mild by northern standards but cold enough for freeze risk: the first freeze typically arrives in early November. Many Corps of Engineers campgrounds around the lake close for the off-season, commonly from October or December through late March, while a few loops such as West Juniper stay open with reduced amenities.

Sites vary widely in size and hookup level. At Eisenhower State Park, Bois d'Arc Ridge holds the full-hookup pull-through RV sites, Armadillo Hill offers water-and-electric sites, and Fossil Ridge and Elm Point are water-only areas, with Elm Point closest to the swimming cove and lake views. Some back-in and pull-through sites are sloped or tight for larger rigs, so checking length limits before booking is worthwhile. After-hours arrivals at Eisenhower use a self-pay station behind the entrance booth, and overnight guests must register at park headquarters by 9 a.m. the following morning. Grayson County is under an emerald ash borer quarantine, so firewood should be bought locally rather than transported in. Expect deer, armadillos, and abundant birdlife around campsites, cell service that is generally reliable near Denison but patchy in coves, and lake access that can involve steep gravel paths down the bluffs on the Texas side.
