Campgrounds and RV parks near Ladonia, TX

The main draw is Ladonia Fossil Park, now open in its permanent location at 2242 FM 904, where FM 904 crosses the North Sulphur River. The park is free to visit and gives fossil hunters of all experience levels the chance to unearth ancient pieces from the silty riverbed, especially after erosion and heavy rains churn up long-buried material. Common finds include fossilized oyster shells, shark teeth, belemnites, ammonites, and other Cretaceous-era pieces. Cooper Lake supports boating, swimming, and fishing for bass, catfish, and crappie, with hiking and biking trails and a designated swim area at Doctors Creek. Day trips to Paris, Texas add the replica Eiffel Tower and small-town dining, and Bonham offers historic sites tied to Sam Rayburn.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Ladonia. Summer temperatures regularly climb above 90°F, so campers tend to stay lakeside, while spring and fall bring milder conditions for hiking. Spring is also the wettest stretch, which is a mixed blessing: heavy rain can flood the North Sulphur River but refreshes the fossil beds. River conditions dictate fossil-park access. Ladonia Fossil Park is open every day during daylight hours, except when the river is flowing, and it is prone to flash floods, so rainy days should be skipped and visitors should exit right away if rain starts during a visit. Cooper Lake State Park is open year-round and often reaches capacity on weekends and holidays from spring through fall, so reservations are highly recommended. Winter is quieter and cooler, with occasional freezes. Wildlife activity picks up in cooler months, and travelers should check the Texas Department of Transportation for road closures, as SH 71 near the park can close after heavy rain.

Private RV parks in the area typically offer full hookups on concrete or gravel pads with 20/30/50-amp service. Hidden Grove RV Resort has pull-thru and back-in sites with full hookups, plus rustic cabin options. Amenities vary: some parks add pools, laundry, and pet areas, while smaller stays lean rustic. At Cooper Lake's Doctors Creek Unit, camping options include water and electric sites with 30/50-amp service suitable for tents and RVs, along with screened shelters and cabins. Many sites sit under mature oaks, and some offer lake access or views. Cell service is generally reliable in the region. The fossil park itself is rugged. The site includes an all-weather parking area, a covered pavilion with picnic tables, and a paved pathway down to the river, but there are no other facilities on-site, so visitors should bring water, sturdy shoes, and sun protection.
