Camping near Lindsay, Texas
Lindsay is a small town in Cooke County along Interstate 35, roughly an hour north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and minutes west of Gainesville. Its position on the I-35 corridor makes it a practical staging point for RV trips to Ray Roberts Lake, a large U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir to the south, and to Lake Texoma, which spans 89,000 acres across the Oklahoma-Texas border and is the twelfth largest Corps of Engineers lake in the United States.
RV options close to town lean toward private, full-hookup parks rather than developed public campgrounds. Old Towne RV Ranch and Lone Oak RV Park serve travelers who want quiet overnight stops close to I-35, while Winstar RV Park sits near the Oklahoma line for guests visiting the Winstar entertainment district. Tejano Ranch RV Park and Lakepoint RV Resort add options for longer stays and lake-oriented trips.
Public camping is a short drive away. Ray Roberts Lake State Park is divided into nine units, with Johnson Branch and Isle du Bois offering the main developed camping facilities, and the Corps operates multiple campgrounds around Lake Texoma.
Things to do around Lindsay
Water recreation drives most trips. Anglers catch largemouth bass, crappie, white bass and catfish at the 29,000-acre Ray Roberts Lake, which has boat ramps, a marina, a fishing pier and fish cleaning stations. Lake Texoma is one of the few reservoirs in the country where striped bass reproduce naturally and draws anglers year-round.
On land, Ray Roberts Lake State Park has multiuse trails at Johnson Branch and Isle du Bois, some of them paved, plus the 20-mile Greenbelt Corridor that runs from the Ray Roberts Dam to Lake Lewisville along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Lake Texoma adds 40 miles of equestrian trails and the scenic Cross Timbers hiking trail, which winds for 14 miles above the lake on rocky ledges and through blackjack woodland.
Off the water, Gainesville offers grocery runs, dining, and access to the Winstar entertainment district just across the Red River in Oklahoma.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of North Texas. Ray Roberts Lake State Park is open year-round, and daytime highs in summer commonly climb into the mid-90s Fahrenheit, drawing swimmers, boaters and anglers to the lake. Spring brings the region's heaviest rain, so plan for muddy sites and possible trail or road closures after storms.
Summer is hot and busy. Sites at state parks and Corps campgrounds fill quickly for holiday weekends, and reservations open several months in advance. Fishing stays productive through the season, with bass most active in spring and summer and crappie and catfish caught year-round.
Winter is mild by northern standards but cold enough for hard freezes. Many of the Corps-managed campgrounds on Lake Texoma close during the winter season on October 1st and reopen April 1st; campgrounds that remain open are first come, first served with limited or no access to amenities. Private RV parks near Lindsay typically stay open year-round.

How to book
Texas State Parks handle their own reservation system separate from the federal one. Campsites at Ray Roberts Lake State Park are reserved through the Texas State Parks reservation system, and standard campsite reservations open up to 5 months in advance. Book as early as possible for lakeside sites and holiday weekends.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Lake Texoma are booked through Recreation.gov. The Corps operates 10 Class A campgrounds on Lake Texoma, with park attendants overseeing fee collection during peak season, self-deposit honor vaults available during the off-season, and entrance gates that open at 6 a.m. and lock at 10 p.m.
Private parks near Lindsay, including Old Towne RV Ranch, Winstar RV Park, Tejano Ranch RV Park, Lakepoint RV Resort, and Lone Oak RV Park, book directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends, reserve well ahead; midweek and shoulder-season stays are usually easier to secure.
What to expect on arrival
State park arrivals follow a strict process. Gates at Johnson Branch are closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.; call the park if arriving after 4:30 p.m. for late arrival instructions, and gate codes are only given to customers with confirmed overnight reservations. Camping fees are in addition to daily per person entry fees.
Fire and firewood rules apply across the region. Burn bans are common; when in effect, no wood or charcoal fires are allowed, but propane stoves are permitted. Cooke and surrounding counties are under a state quarantine to slow the spread of the emerald ash borer, restricting movement of firewood, so buy or gather wood where you plan to burn it.
Expect first-come, first-served overflow at some Corps sites, mixed cell coverage away from I-35, and hot, exposed pavement in summer. Bring shade, water, and a plan for pets during midday heat.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lindsay, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lindsay, TX?
RV rental in Lindsay, TX is one of the most affordable ways to explore North Texas, with travel trailers often starting around $80 to $130 per night and Class C motorhomes typically ranging from $150 to $250 per night. Class A coaches and luxury fifth wheels run higher, but you can offset that easily by traveling midweek or in shoulder seasons like March or October when Cooke County weather is mild and rates dip. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy so the host drops the RV at Moss Lake or Lake Ray Roberts for you, which saves fuel and turns your first night into pure vacation instead of setup stress.
traveltexas.com/places-to-stay/rv-parksDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lindsay, TX?
Good news: your regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lindsay for virtually every motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for rigs over 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and the vast majority of rentals on the platform fall well under that. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the app, so the whole process takes minutes. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set for your Texas RV trip.
dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/classes-driver-licensesWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Lindsay?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of Lindsay knowing you're covered if something unexpected happens on I-35 or out near Lake Texoma. Protection plans cover physical damage to the RV at different coverage levels that you select at checkout (hosts don't pick it for you), so you can match it to your comfort zone. It's designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rental in Lindsay, TX and gives you real peace of mind to focus on the trip, not the what-ifs. You can review the plan details, deductibles, and inclusions during booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Lindsay, TX is low-risk thanks to RVezy's standardized cancellation policy, which is set by RVezy and not by individual hosts. You'll get a full refund grace period right after booking, plus additional refund windows that depend on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook with travel credits. The full policy is available in the RVezy Help Center and shown during checkout, and the support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Lindsay, TX?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Lindsay is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged travelers. North Texas is a great region for dogs because nearby Lake Ray Roberts State Park (about 15 minutes south) has leashed-pet-friendly trails and shoreline, and Moss Lake just outside Gainesville lets pups join you in the water. Many Lindsay hosts charge a small pet fee or cleaning add-on, which you'll see clearly at checkout. Pro tip: pack a collapsible bowl and a tie-out, because summer pavement gets hot and shaded grass sites at Isle du Bois are gold.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ray-roberts-lake-isle-du-boisCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Lindsay?
Yes, RV delivery in Lindsay is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your rig at popular spots like Lake Ray Roberts State Park, Moss Lake, or even a private driveway in Gainesville or Muenster. They'll level the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just turn on the Delivery filter when you search, and check each listing for the delivery radius and fee. It's a game-changer for families who want to skip the tow-vehicle math and dive straight into vacation.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ray-roberts-lakeHow far can I drive from Lindsay and where do people go?
Lindsay is a great launchpad for a Texas RV trip thanks to its spot right on I-35 in Cooke County. Popular road trips from Lindsay include Lake Texoma (about 35 miles north), the Fort Worth Stockyards (about 75 miles south), Dallas (about 75 miles southeast), Turner Falls in Oklahoma (about 75 miles north), and Possum Kingdom Lake (about 140 miles southwest). Many hosts offer generous daily mileage and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, so always check the mileage policy on the listing. If you're planning a longer loop, message the host through the listing before booking to confirm the best rate for your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lindsay%2C+TexasWhere are the best campgrounds near Lindsay, TX?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Lindsay, TX. The best campgrounds near Lindsay include Lake Ray Roberts State Park (Isle du Bois and Johnson Branch units, both with full hookups and lakefront sites about 15-25 minutes away), Moss Lake Park just outside Gainesville (city-run, quiet, with electric and water sites), Ray Roberts Marina RV Park, and Sanger/Denton North KOA about 25 minutes south on I-35 with pull-throughs and a pool. For something rustic, Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma is a 50-minute drive north. Pro tip: book Isle du Bois on the Texas Parks & Wildlife reservation site early for spring weekends, when bluebonnets carpet the trails.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ray-roberts-lake-isle-du-boisWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Lindsay?
The sweet spots for an RV road trip from Lindsay are mid-March through late May and again from mid-September through early November, when North Texas highs sit comfortably in the 70s and 80s with cooler nights perfect for campfires. Summer (June through August) regularly tops 95-100°F, so plan for shaded sites, strong AC, and early-morning drives. Winters are mild with daytime highs in the 50s and occasional cold snaps, making December and January a quiet, cheap-RV-rental Lindsay window if you don't mind layering up. Spring wildflower season around Lake Ray Roberts is unbeatable, especially for photographers and families.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Lindsay&state=TX&site=FWDI've never driven an RV. Will I be okay?
Yes, and most first time renting an RV guests in Lindsay are surprised how quickly it clicks. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, the awning, and dump procedures, so you're never left guessing. Choose a Class B campervan rental in Lindsay or a small Class C if you're nervous about size, because they drive much like a large van. The roads around Lindsay are flat, well-marked, and traffic is light outside of I-35, making it an ideal place to get comfortable behind the wheel. Pro tip: do a short loop on FM 1198 before heading to the campground to find your mirrors and turning radius.
txdot.gov/safety/sharing-road.htmlWhat happens if I have a breakdown or flat tire?
Help is one call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on US-82 or a dead battery at a campground in Cooke County is sorted with a single phone number. The dispatch team handles tows, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery across Texas. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app if you have questions about a system in the RV. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's roadside assistance card during your walkthrough and keep it in your glovebox, so you have it ready before you even pull out of Lindsay.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws/move-over-slow-down.htmlCan I take the RV across state lines or into Mexico?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals. From Lindsay, you can easily cross into Oklahoma (the border is only about 15 miles north on I-35) to visit Turner Falls, Lake Murray State Park, or the Wichita Mountains, and many guests do longer loops through Arkansas or New Mexico. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy because insurance and protection coverage do not extend there. Always confirm out-of-state plans with your host through the RVezy message thread before booking, since some hosts cap mileage or restrict specific regions. Pro tip: Oklahoma's Arbuckle Mountains make a perfect 2-night warm-up trip about an hour from Lindsay.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost?
Realistic expectations help you budget like a pro. A Class B campervan rental near Lindsay typically gets 18-22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes run 10-14 MPG, and big Class A rigs land around 7-10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 20-30% drop in MPG while towing. Gas prices in Cooke County usually run a few cents below the Texas state average, and the Buc-ee's in Denton (about 35 minutes south on I-35) is a popular fuel-and-snack stop. Pro tip: fill up in Gainesville before heading to Lake Texoma, since prices near the lake are typically higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For the best campgrounds near Lindsay, plan ahead: Texas state parks like Lake Ray Roberts (Isle du Bois and Johnson Branch) open reservations 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks & Wildlife reservation system, and prime spring and fall weekends fill within hours of release. Aim to lock in your campsite as soon as you book your RV, ideally 2-3 months out for weekends and 2-4 weeks for weekdays. Private parks like Sanger/Denton North KOA and Moss Lake Park are more flexible but still busy on holidays. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday-Thursday) almost always have openings, even last-minute.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Lindsay?
Driving an RV around Lindsay is genuinely easygoing. The town sits on flat North Texas plains with wide, straight farm-to-market roads and direct access to I-35, which makes north-south travel simple. Watch for occasional strong crosswinds on open stretches near the Red River, and be aware that spring (April-June) is severe-weather season with possible thunderstorms and hail, so check the National Weather Service Fort Worth forecast before driving days. Avoid taking tall rigs under low-clearance railroad underpasses on older Gainesville side streets. Pro tip: if storms are forecast, park at a sturdy campground with a bathhouse you can shelter in, like Isle du Bois.
weather.gov/fwd/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lindsay?
Campgrounds near Lindsay are well equipped for RV camping. Lake Ray Roberts State Park offers 30/50-amp electric and water hookups at most sites, with dump stations on-site, hot showers, and potable water fills. Moss Lake Park provides electric and water with a central dump. Sanger/Denton North KOA has full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, a pool, and a camp store. Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma has full and partial hookup loops plus a fish-cleaning station. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the host's driveway and dump on your way back through Gainesville at the Love's Travel Stop, which has a public dump station.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ray-roberts-lake-johnson-branch/fees-facilitiesWhat's inside the RV? Beds, kitchen, bathroom, Wi-Fi?
Most RVs you can rent in Lindsay come fully equipped for comfortable family RV trip Lindsay adventures. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Seatbelts are provided for the listed sleeps/passengers count, and many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and roof-mounted air conditioning, which you'll appreciate during a Texas summer. Wi-Fi and onboard generators are common add-ons, and you can filter listings to find them. Pro tip: message the host to confirm linens, towels, and kitchen kit are included, as most Lindsay hosts provide them at no extra cost.
tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/things-to-do/campingWhat add-ons do hosts offer and how do pickup and mileage work?
Lindsay hosts typically offer practical add-ons that make life easier: delivery and setup, generator use, camp chairs and tables, bike racks, propane refills, BBQ grills, linen and kitchen kits, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup is usually at the host's home or your chosen delivery location with a 30-60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary by listing, with many hosts offering 100-150 free miles per day and overage charged around $0.35-$0.50 per mile, and some featuring unlimited mileage for longer trips. Check the listing details closely. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator add-on if you're heading to a no-hookup site at Lake Texoma, it's cheaper than you'd think.
txdmv.gov/motoristsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Lindsay, TX is handled securely through the RVezy platform, so you never need to wire money or pay the host directly. You'll pay the rental cost, taxes, and any chosen add-ons at booking with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: take dated photos and a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, that small habit avoids most deposit disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in the Lindsay area outside of campgrounds?
You've got options beyond formal campgrounds. Many Walmart locations in nearby Gainesville and Sherman allow overnight RV parking with manager permission, and the Choctaw Casino in Durant, OK (about 50 miles north) offers free RV parking for guests. Texas rest areas along I-35 permit short overnight stops, though they're not designed for extended stays. Where to park an RV in Lindsay overnight legally for longer is at established RV parks or state park campgrounds, as Cooke County and most Texas cities prohibit overnight RV parking on residential streets. Pro tip: Harvest Hosts members can stay at participating wineries and farms within an hour of Lindsay, a memorable way to break up a road trip from Lindsay.
