Campgrounds near McCamey, Texas
McCamey sits in Upton County on the eastern edge of the Permian Basin, roughly halfway between Fort Stockton and Big Lake on US 67 and US 385. The area experiences a hot semi-arid climate, marked by hot summers and cold winters, with generally dry conditions, low annual precipitation that is somewhat wetter in summer, and little snowfall. RV travelers typically use the town as an overnight stop or a base for oilfield work, stargazing, and day trips into the Trans-Pecos region.
Options in the immediate area are limited to small private parks such as Gracelyn RV Park and Pleasant Parks RV Estates near Crane, along with Westex Living RV Park and Sagebrush RV Park, most of which cater to a mix of long-term residents and short-stay travelers with full hookups and pull-through sites. About 55 miles southwest on I-10, Fort Stockton RV Park offers a larger commercial option with more traveler-oriented amenities and big-rig access.
Public land camping is concentrated farther afield, with state parks and national parks reachable as day drives or one-tank trips.
Things to do near McCamey
The Mendoza Trail Museum in McCamey covers regional oil, ranching, and Native American history, and the town promotes itself as the Wind Energy Capital of Texas, with turbine ridges visible from US 67. Sunset and night-sky viewing are strong draws thanks to low light pollution across Upton and Pecos counties.
Monahans Sandhills State Park offers high dunes of white Permian sand ideal for sandboarding and sunset photography. Balmorhea State Park, about ninety minutes southwest of the Crane area, is home to a large spring-fed swimming pool fed by clear artesian water. Fort Stockton adds historic sites, including the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum and the Fort Stockton Historic District, and Big Bend National Park is reachable as a longer drive south.

93° / 72°F 45 mmHot and sunny; 50-amp AC and shade are priorities.
- fall
September - November
79° / 54°F 28 mmCooler nights, clear skies; prime stargazing season.
- winter
December - February
61° / 37°F 12 mmCool and dry with occasional freezes; heat-tape water lines.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the region. From March through May, daytime highs generally climb into the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, wildflowers appear along US 67 and US 385, and overnight lows stay cool enough for good sleeping without heavy heating. Wind is a constant factor, especially in spring, and high-profile rigs should plan travel days around forecasts.
Summer is hot. August is typically the warmest month, and July and August share the highest average low temperatures. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible, and shade is scarce at most parks, so full hookups with 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing.
Fall brings milder days and cooler nights through November, with clear skies favorable for stargazing. Snowfall is rare and light, generally limited to January through March, November, and December. Winters are short and dry with occasional freezes, so RVers should heat-tape water lines and watch for cold fronts moving through West Texas.
How to book a campsite near McCamey
Private parks in and around McCamey are typically booked directly with the property by phone or through their websites. Some parks, including Gracelyn RV Park, offer instant online booking where reservations are automatically approved. Third-party platforms such as RoverPass and Good Sam also list availability for several regional parks.
Because the oilfield workforce fills many local sites on weekly and monthly stays, short-notice availability for weekends can be tight. Booking two to four weeks ahead is a safer window, and longer lead time is recommended around holiday weekends and hunting season.
For Texas state parks in the wider region, such as Monahans Sandhills and Balmorhea, reservations are handled through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Overnight reservations can be made up to five months in advance, and day passes can be reserved up to 30 days in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Most parks near McCamey are practical, gravel-pad properties built for full hookups, pull-through access, and easy in-and-out for big rigs rather than resort-style amenities. Expect 30- and 50-amp service, water, and sewer at most sites, with laundry and shower buildings common but pools and playgrounds less so.
Cell service on the major carriers is generally reliable in town and along I-10 and US 67, though it thins quickly on backroads. Grocery and fuel options are limited within McCamey itself, so many travelers restock in Fort Stockton, Monahans, or Odessa.
Expect wind, dust, and strong sun. Awnings should be retracted when sites are unattended, and pets need protection from hot pavement and stickers in summer.
