Campgrounds and RV parks near McKinney Acres, TX

The immediate area is flat semi-arid rangeland, so most activities involve short drives. Andrews itself has a municipal golf course, a county park, and a small county museum, all within a few minutes of the McKinney Acres CDP. Odessa, 32 miles south, offers the Odessa Meteor Crater, the Presidential Archives and Leadership Library, and the Ellen Noel Art Museum. Midland adds the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum and the George W. Bush Childhood Home. Monahans Sandhills State Park, about 70 miles southwest, is a popular day trip for dune play and short hikes. Families traveling with kids often pair a McKinney Acres stay with a longer westward push to Guadalupe Mountains National Park or Carlsbad Caverns, both reachable in roughly three hours.

The region has a hot semi-arid climate with big day-to-night temperature swings. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. March through May brings warm days, cool nights, and the highest tornado and severe-storm risk of the year, so weather radios are recommended. October and November stay sunny with lighter winds and thinner crowds. Summer is long and hot, with daytime highs regularly above 95°F and occasional stretches over 100°F. Afternoon thunderstorms can be intense but brief. Shade is scarce, so RVers should plan for heavy A/C use and full hookups. Winters are short and generally mild during the day, but overnight lows drop below freezing on cold fronts, and occasional light snow or freezing drizzle can occur. Most private RV parks in the Permian Basin operate year-round because of steady oilfield demand, but seasonal amenities like pools typically close from late fall through early spring.

Expect open, flat terrain with mesquite, creosote, and limited natural shade. Most parks in the area are gravel or caliche pull-throughs designed for large rigs, with full 30/50-amp hookups, sewer, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable along U.S. 385 and in Andrews. Traffic includes frequent oilfield trucks, so plan arrivals during daylight and watch for heavy commercial vehicles on rural roads. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supply runs are easiest in Andrews or Odessa. Wind is a defining feature: sustained breezes and gusty spring days are common, and blowing dust can reduce visibility. Awnings should be stowed when unattended, and leveling blocks help on loose gravel pads.
