Campgrounds and RV parks near Mesquite, TX

Lake Ray Hubbard is one of the largest lakes in north Texas spanning 22,000 acres, and is great for fishing, skiing, relaxing, and recreational boating. Predominant fish species include white and hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, channel and blue catfish, and white crappie, with hybrid striped bass and blue catfish among the most abundant in recent years. The Harbor at Rockwall, on the eastern shore, offers waterfront restaurants, shops, and boat access. In town, Mesquite is known for the Mesquite Championship Rodeo and Mesquite Arena events. Family travelers use the location to reach the Dallas Zoo, the Perot Museum, the George W. Bush Presidential Library, and Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, all within about a forty-minute drive. For hiking and mountain biking, Cedar Hill State Park has over 20 miles of trails with lake access on Joe Pool Lake.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Mesquite area. March through May brings mild temperatures and green landscapes, but it is also the region's active severe-weather season. North Texas storm season runs March into May, so keep a weather radio handy and know where to shelter if a warning pops while camped by the water. Summers are hot and humid. For most of May to September, Dallas has daily temperatures of at least 80 degrees, and typically 22 of those days have 100-plus degree weather. Sites with shade, 50-amp service for air conditioning, and pool access become priorities. Rain volume drops in July and August. Fall cools quickly after September and offers reliable weather through November. Winters are generally mild but can include short freezes. Freezing overnight temperatures can happen in Dallas anytime from November to March, normally totalling 23 days a year, and typically one or two nights a winter have lows that drop to 20 degrees Fahrenheit or less. Occasional ice storms can affect travel.

Most nearby parks are resort-style with full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and big-rig access. Amenities at the larger private parks typically include 30 and 50 amp full hookups, a pool, laundry, showers, and dog runs. Cable and Wi-Fi are common at the private parks, though speeds vary. At Cedar Hill State Park, expect a more traditional campground layout with water and electric sites, fire rings, lantern poles, and picnic tables, and most sites are wooded. A no-show policy applies: if campers do not check in by noon of the day after the scheduled arrival date, the rest of the reservation is cancelled, and entrance fees are refunded but other fees are forfeited. Traffic on I-30, I-635, and US-80 is heavy during weekday rush hours, so plan arrivals mid-day when possible.
