Campgrounds near Monahans, Texas
Monahans sits in West Texas along Interstate 20, in the Permian Basin between Odessa and Pecos. The town is the county seat of Ward County and serves as the base for visiting Monahans Sandhills State Park, known for wind-sculpted sand dunes that stretch across roughly 3,840 acres. RV travelers use the area as an overnight stop on cross-Texas routes and as a destination for dune play.
RV options near town lean toward full-hookup private parks aimed at both travelers and long-term Permian Basin workers. Sealy Street RV Park, Out West RV Resort, 5V RV Ranch, Lion RV Park, and The Rise at Monahans Lodge and RV Park all sit within a short drive of the interstate, with pull-through sites suited to larger rigs.
For a state park stay, Monahans Sandhills State Park is accessible year-round via paved roads off Interstate 20. Willow Draw Campground accommodates RVs and trailers between 25 and 60 feet, with most sites offering electric and water hookups, plus a shared dump station and covered picnic shelters at headquarters.
Things to do near Monahans
The main draw is the state park itself. Visitors can rent sand discs at park headquarters and slide down the dunes, with rentals available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Many people bring their own horses to ride in the designated equestrian area, and all horses entering the park must have a negative Coggins test less than one year old. Kids typically spend hours climbing and sledding the dunes near the campsites.
Ground fires are not allowed at Monahans Sandhills State Park, off-road traffic is prohibited, and vehicles must stay on established roads to avoid getting stuck. Sunrise and sunset over the dunes are the standard photo stops.
Beyond the park, Odessa and Midland (about an hour east) add museums, chain restaurants, and grocery resupply. Balmorhea State Park, with its spring-fed swimming pool, is a common day trip to the southwest.

Monahans has long, hot summers and short, cold, dry winters, with mostly clear skies year round. The park can get very hot in summer, and spring and fall are more moderate times to visit. Daytime highs from June through August routinely push into the mid-90s Fahrenheit, and shade is scarce on the dunes, so families typically hike early or near sunset.
The state park's busy season runs September to March, when cooler temperatures make dune activity comfortable all day. September is typically the wettest month, and Monahans receives very little snow. Fall thunderstorms are usually brief but can arrive quickly.
Winds usually blow from the southeast in summer and from the northwest in winter, reshaping the dunes constantly. Blowing sand during storms can work into RV vents and slide seals, so awnings should be retracted when gusts pick up. Winter nights drop below freezing at times, and fresh-water hose freeze protection is worth planning for.
How to book Monahans campgrounds
For the state park, book through the Texas State Parks reservation system. The park often reaches capacity and reservations are recommended for both camping and day use; passes can be reserved online or by calling the customer service center before arrival. Campsite reservations can be made up to five months in advance, while day passes open one month out. If a camper does not check in by noon of the day after the scheduled arrival, the rest of the reservation is cancelled; entrance fees are refunded but other fees are forfeited.
Private parks near Monahans (Sealy Street RV Park, Out West RV Resort, 5V RV Ranch, Lion RV Park, and The Rise at Monahans Lodge and RV Park) generally book directly by phone or through their websites. Weekday availability is usually easier than weekends, since oilfield workers occupy many long-term sites.
What to expect in Monahans
The landscape is open and exposed. The state park sits within rolling sand dunes with minimal natural shade, though some sites share a shelter. Bring more water than expected, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and sealed bags for electronics, because the fine sand gets into phones, cameras, and gear.
Cell service is generally usable for trip planning, and the clear northern exposure works well for satellite internet. The park gate locks at 10 p.m. nightly, with no afterhours access, so late arrivals should plan an overnight stop elsewhere.
Private parks around town are functional rather than scenic, with gravel pads, full hookups, and easy interstate access. Expect industrial and oilfield traffic on nearby roads, and note that Monahans once recorded 120 degrees Fahrenheit, so summer heat planning is not optional.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Monahans, TX
Is a regular license enough to rent an RV in Monahans, TX?
Good news: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need for the RV rental in Monahans that most travelers book on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for rigs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and the vast majority of campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers on the platform fall well under that limit. You must be 25 or older and you'll verify your identity through RVezy during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), and you're cleared to cruise I-20 toward the Sandhills.
tdlr.texas.gov/driver/How much does it cost to rent an RV in Monahans, TX?

Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can rent an RV in Monahans with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host) so you can pick what fits your comfort zone. With sandy winds common around Monahans Sandhills State Park, that built-in support is a quiet confidence-booster before you ever turn the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Monahans RV rental?
Yes, and that flexibility is a big reason first-timers feel comfortable booking. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and it includes a full money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in a rig without second-guessing. After that, refund amounts depend on how close you are to your trip start date. You'll see the exact terms during checkout and in your trip details. Tip: book early for Monahans Sandhills spring-break dates, then use the grace period to finalize your plans with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Monahans RV trip?
Absolutely, Monahans is dog-friendly, and so are plenty of RVezy hosts. Filter for pet-friendly RV rental in Monahans on the listing page to see rigs that welcome four-legged co-pilots, and message the host about any extra cleaning fees or pet notes before you book. Monahans Sandhills State Park allows leashed pets in the campground and on the dunes (just brush sandburs out of paws), and several private parks in town also welcome pets. Pro tip: bring booties for midday dune walks in summer, when sand surface temperatures can get extremely hot.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/monahans-sandhills/park_informationCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Monahans?
Yes, and RV delivery in Monahans is a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts will tow or drive the rig to Monahans Sandhills State Park, Out West RV Resort, or another local park, level it on your site, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter when you search, then message the host with your campsite number and arrival time. It's the easiest way to enjoy a Monahans RV trip without ever touching a steering wheel, which is especially nice if you're flying into Midland International Airport (MAF) about 55 miles east.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Monahans%2C%20TexasHow does mileage work and how far can I realistically drive?
Hosts set their own mileage policies on RVezy, and many Monahans listings offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some advertising unlimited mileage that's perfect for road-trippers. From Monahans you're about 35 miles to Odessa, 55 miles to Midland, 75 miles to Balmorhea State Park's famous spring-fed pool, 165 miles to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and roughly 215 miles to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. If you're planning an RV road trip from Monahans through Big Bend National Park (about 240 miles south), filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage and message the host to confirm before you book.

In town, Out West RV Resort features paved streets, full hookups, and a security fence, while Sealy Street RV Park is a locally owned spot with a friendly on-site manager. The Rise at Monahans Lodge and RV Park rounds out the list with gated full hookups. Insider tip: book the state park months in advance for spring break, since it's the only campground actually inside the dunes.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/monahans-sandhills/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time of year to visit Monahans?
The sweet spot for a Monahans RV trip is mid-October through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to low 80s and the dunes are pleasant to climb. March and April bring wildflowers and the famous spring-break crowds at Monahans Sandhills State Park, while October and November offer warm afternoons and crisp nights perfect for stargazing. Summer is intense: June through August routinely tops 95°F to 100°F with strong winds. Winters are mild but nighttime temps can dip to the 30s, so confirm your host's heater works. Pro tip: late February shoulder season often delivers 70°F days with quieter campsites.
weather.gov/maf/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're in good hands, and Monahans is one of the easier places in Texas to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slides, the generator, and the dump valves, plus you can text or call them throughout your trip. If first time renting an RV has you nervous, choose a Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Monahans, which drive much like a large pickup. I-20 runs flat and straight through town with wide shoulders, and Park Road 41 into Monahans Sandhills State Park is smooth pavement with no tight switchbacks. Bonus: order delivery and skip driving entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout outside Monahans is a phone call away, not a panic moment. RVezy's support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center, and your host is your first call for quirks specific to their RV. West Texas tip: I-20 between Monahans and Pecos has solid cell coverage and frequent truck stops, making it one of the more forgiving stretches in the region if you need a quick service stop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips I can take from Monahans?
Monahans sits at a sweet crossroads for an RV road trip from Monahans into some of the Southwest's most iconic landscapes. Head about 165 miles north to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico, 215 miles west to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, or 240 miles south through Fort Stockton to Big Bend National Park. Want a shorter loop? Drive 75 miles southwest to Balmorhea State Park for a swim in one of the world's largest spring-fed pools, then continue to Davis Mountains State Park (about 115 miles total). Cross-border trips into Mexico aren't allowed on RVezy rentals, but New Mexico and Arizona are fair game with host approval.
nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Monahans RV trip?
Fuel is usually friendlier here than in big-city Texas, which helps stretch your budget. Most Class C motorhomes you'll rent in Monahans average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans get 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Diesel pushers average 9 to 12 MPG. Gas prices in the Permian Basin tend to run at or slightly below the Texas state average thanks to local refining. Stock up at the Pilot or Love's at I-20 Exit 86 before heading deeper into West Texas, where stations thin out fast. Pro tip: fuel up before driving south toward Big Bend, the next reliable diesel is in Fort Stockton.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground around Monahans?
For Monahans Sandhills State Park, book as early as possible: Texas Parks and Wildlife opens reservations up to five months ahead through their official reservation system, and spring break (typically mid-March) and holiday weekends sell out the moment sites release. For private parks like Out West RV Resort, Sealy Street RV Park, and The Rise at Monahans, 1 to 2 weeks ahead is usually plenty outside of oil-field surges. Insider tip: weekday stays at the state park are dramatically easier to grab, and a day-use entry fee applies on top of the nightly site fee unless you have a Texas State Park Pass.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/monahans-sandhills/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are local driving conditions like around Monahans?
Driving around Monahans is refreshingly straightforward. I-20 is flat, wide, and well-maintained, and the town itself sits at just 2,600 feet of elevation with no mountain passes. The real West Texas factor is wind: gusts of 25 to 40 mph are common in spring, so plan longer drives for morning hours when winds are calmer. Watch for oilfield truck traffic on US-385 and TX-18, and keep extra following distance behind tankers. Sandstorms can occasionally drop visibility near the dunes, so if you see blowing sand, pull off at the next exit and wait it out. Otherwise, this is some of the easiest big-sky driving in Texas.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Monahans?
Most campgrounds near Monahans deliver solid hookup service. Monahans Sandhills State Park offers electric and water sites, picnic tables under metal shade shelters, fire rings, clean restrooms with hot showers, and a dump station on the way out, though there are no sewer hookups at individual sites. Out West RV Resort and The Rise at Monahans provide full hookups including sewer, paved pads, and Wi-Fi. To fill fresh water, use the spigot at your site or the day-use area; for dumping, the state park's dump station is available to registered campers. Best campgrounds near Monahans all sit within 10 miles of an I-20 exit.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/monahans-sandhills/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat features and amenities will my rental RV typically have?
RVs listed in Monahans are built for desert comfort. Expect a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (critical here in summer), a propane furnace for chilly winter nights, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most Class C motorhome rentals in Monahans sleep 4 to 7, and many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and a generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi varies, but cell signal from AT&T and Verizon is strong along I-20 and inside Monahans Sandhills State Park, so hotspots work well. Confirm specifics on the listing page before you book.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/monahans-sandhillsWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts on RVezy offer a long list of popular add-ons: linens and bedding packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor mats ($15 to $40), generator hours, propane top-offs, bike racks, kid kits, and even pre-stocked kitchens. Pickup and drop-off typically happen at the host's home in or near Monahans, but many will deliver to Monahans Sandhills State Park, Midland International Airport, or Odessa for an extra fee tied to distance. Mileage policies are set per listing (often 100 to 150 free miles nightly, with overage at $0.30 to $0.50 per mile). Pro tip: ask the host to bundle a dunes kit with sand mats, broom, and a tarp for the entryway.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/monahans-sandhills/fees-facilities/campsitesHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You'll pay through RVezy at booking (no cash, no off-platform transfers) using a credit or debit card, which keeps your protection plan and cancellation terms fully active. Hosts may also require a refundable security deposit, held separately from your booking payment and released after the host confirms the rig came back in good shape. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your contract requires it. Easy in, easy out, ready for the dunes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle the West Texas summer heat in my RV?
You can absolutely enjoy a summer RV rental in Monahans, you just plan smart. Daytime highs in June, July, and August regularly hit 95°F to 100°F, so park with the awning facing west, run the roof AC on shore power, and use reflective window shades during the hottest hours. Drive in the early morning when winds are lighter and temps are cooler. Hit the Monahans Sandhills dunes at sunrise or after 6 p.m. for the best light and bearable sand. Hydrate constantly, and your hosts will often loan a portable fan, just ask.
