Camping near Mount Pleasant, Texas
Mount Pleasant sits in Titus County in northeast Texas along Interstate 30, roughly two hours east of Dallas and an hour west of Texarkana. The town serves as a practical base for lake-focused RV trips, with Lake Bob Sandlin, Lake Cypress Springs, and Lake Monticello all within a short drive. Two ecoregions meet on the shore of Lake Bob Sandlin, producing large trees, tall grasses, and a mix of plants and animals that reward campers who want fishing, paddling, and shaded sites.
RV travelers have several options within about a fifteen-minute radius of downtown. Mount Pleasant KOA Journey handles interstate travelers with amenities aimed at families. Camp Langston RV Resort and Ramblin' Fever RV Park focus on longer stays and full hookups. Closer to the lake, Big Cypress RV Park sits on the north side of Pittsburg with 30/50-amp full-hookup sites and mature shade trees, and Barefoot Bay Marina and RV Park offers waterfront sites on the south shore of Lake Bob Sandlin with an on-site boat ramp and marina.
Most private parks in the area take reservations online or by phone, and Lake Bob Sandlin State Park uses the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system.
Things to do near Mount Pleasant
The lakes drive most of the recreation. Lake Bob Sandlin covers roughly 9,000 acres and holds largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, with a boat ramp, a lighted fishing pier, and a fish-cleaning station inside Lake Bob Sandlin State Park. The park also loans fishing poles and rents kayaks for use in the park, and no fishing license is required when fishing from shore in a Texas state park.
On land, the park has several miles of wooded trails for hiking and biking through Piney Woods and Post Oak Savannah terrain. In town, families can tour the Mid-America Flight Museum, and Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards and the Ezekiel Airship exhibit in nearby Pittsburg add half-day trip options. The Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Center and Witness Park and Prayer Tower near the lake round out the local sightseeing.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. March through May and October through November bring daytime highs in the low to mid 20s Celsius (mid 70s Fahrenheit). Spring is a wet stretch, with frequent thunderstorms in April and May. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, April and September are the wettest months at Lake Bob Sandlin. First freeze at the park occurs in mid-November and the last freeze occurs in late March, so shoulder-season campers should still expect the occasional cold night.
Summer runs hot and humid. July and August highs reach the mid-90s Fahrenheit, with August the warmest month and heat index readings that can climb well above the air temperature. Sites at Lake Bob Sandlin State Park often fill during summer weekends, and reservations are recommended from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Winter is mild by North American standards but genuinely cold on occasion. The January average low sits near freezing, and light snow is possible in January and February, though most private RV parks in the area stay open year round.
How to book a campsite
Lake Bob Sandlin State Park is booked through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, either online at the state parks site or by phone through the customer service center. Standard campsites can be reserved up to five months in advance, and cabins up to twelve months out. The park often reaches capacity and reservations are strongly recommended for both camping and day-use entry. A day-use fee applies per person aged thirteen and older on top of camping fees.
Private parks in and around Mount Pleasant, including Mount Pleasant KOA Journey, Camp Langston RV Resort, Ramblin' Fever RV Park, Big Cypress RV Park, and Barefoot Bay Marina and RV Park, take direct bookings through their own websites or by phone. For summer holiday weekends and fall foliage weekends, book several weeks ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Expect wooded, gently rolling terrain rather than open plains. Sites at Lake Bob Sandlin State Park include water and electric hookups, fire rings or grills, and picnic tables, with restrooms and showers within walking distance. Private parks in the area typically offer 30/50-amp full hookups, paved or graveled pads, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with some offering pools, dog runs, and boat ramps.
Gate hours at the state park run 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and late-arriving campers need to contact the office during business hours for the gate code. Cell coverage is generally good near the Interstate 30 corridor and adequate at most lakeside parks.
Biting insects are active from spring through early fall, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in warmer months, so pack accordingly.
