Camping near New Boston, Texas
New Boston sits in Bowie County in far northeast Texas along Interstate 30, roughly twenty miles west of Texarkana and within easy reach of the Piney Woods and Wright Patman Lake. The town works well as an overnight I-30 stop for RV travellers heading between Dallas and Little Rock, and as a base for exploring the East Texas lakes region.
Close-in options lean toward smaller, full-hookup private parks aimed at road-trippers and long-stay guests. Shady Pines RV Park offers full hookups with 30-amp and 50-amp service. New Wave RV Park, Texarkana RV Park and Event Center, and RV Corral provide additional pull-through capacity closer to the Texarkana metro.
For a state-park experience, Atlanta State Park sits in the piney woods along Wright Patman Lake, about a short drive south of New Boston. Its White Oak Ridge camping area is the closest developed public campground to the city, and it appears in reservation listings as White Oak Ridge - Atlanta State Park.
Things to do near New Boston
Wright Patman Lake is the main draw. Atlanta State Park sits on a large reservoir suited to boating, water skiing, fishing, and swimming, with two boat ramps and a fish-cleaning station for lake access. A designated swim area is available, though sections can turn muddy after heavy rain and no lifeguard is on duty.
Hikers have several short trails to choose from. The park offers 4.8 miles of hiking trails, including a 0.8-mile nature trail. The Volksmarch Trail intersects the Arrowhead Trail for lake views, and the Hickory Hollow Nature Trail loops near the Wilkins Creek camping area.
Off the water, day-trippers can reach historic Jefferson to the south for antebellum homes, museums, and narrow-gauge rail and riverboat rides. Nearby Atlanta offers shopping and dining, and Linden hosts a rodeo and wildflower festival in April. The Three States marker, where Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana meet, is another regional stop.

Summer is the busy season on Wright Patman Lake. Atlanta State Park is open year-round, but summer is peak season and the best time for swimming and water sports. Expect hot, humid days with afternoon thunderstorm risk. Book state-park sites as far ahead as the system allows, and target weekdays if flexibility permits.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel. Spring brings dogwoods and wildflowers along the lakeshore, and fall turns the forests with autumn color. Spring is also the wettest stretch, with April typically the rainiest month, so plan for muddy sites and check road conditions after storms.
Winter is quiet but usable. January is the coldest month, with average lows in the upper 30s Fahrenheit, and light snow is possible in January and February. If the cold is manageable, winter is a good time for bird-watching in the park. Atlanta State Park closes fully during scheduled winter hunt dates, from noon the night before the first day of a hunt until 8 a.m. the day after it ends.
Booking and reservations
For Atlanta State Park, reservations go through the Texas State Parks system. All 58 campsites can be reserved in advance via the Texas State Parks website; campsite reservations open five months in advance, while the picnic pavilion can be booked up to twelve months out. Sites can fill quickly on summer and holiday weekends, so booking at least three months ahead is recommended for the best spots.
The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., often reaches capacity, and reservations are highly recommended for both camping and day use. Day-use entry passes can be reserved up to one month in advance.
A no-show policy applies: if a guest fails to check in by noon of the day after the scheduled arrival, the rest of the reservation is cancelled and non-entrance fees are forfeited, so call the park or the Customer Service Center if arrival will be late. Private parks such as Shady Pines RV Park, New Wave RV Park, Texarkana RV Park and Event Center, and RV Corral generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on arrival
Atlanta State Park sits on rolling, wooded terrain typical of the East Texas piney woods. Sites follow the natural contours of the land, and some pads slope with the hillside, so leveling blocks are worth packing. All 58 campsites in the park have water and electricity, and 14 of those add sewer hookups. Maximum RV length at the White Oak Ridge camping area is 60 feet.
Full-hookup sites are limited, and there is only one dump station serving the entire campground, which can cause delays during busy periods. There is no entry gate or gate code; after-hours arrivals use the Iron Ranger self-pay envelope at Park Headquarters, and credit-card guests must register at headquarters by 9 a.m. the following morning.
A firewood restriction is in place. The county is under an emerald ash borer quarantine, movement of firewood is restricted, and campers should buy firewood where they burn it.
