Camping near New Waverly, Texas
New Waverly sits in Walker County in the East Texas Pineywoods, about 50 miles north of Houston along Interstate 45. The town hosts the Sam Houston National Forest ranger station on FM 1375 and serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Lake Conroe to the west or Lake Livingston to the east.
Campground options range from developed state park sites to lakefront RV resorts. Raven Hill - Huntsville State Park offers hookup sites inside a pine and hardwood forest along Lake Raven, while Majestic Pines RV Resort, Venice on the Lake RV Park, Stow A Way Marina and RV Park, and Lochness RV Park provide private-park amenities closer to the reservoirs.
The area works well for families. Sites are generally shaded, lake access is easy, and the Lone Star Hiking Trail cuts through the surrounding national forest. Houston-area amenities, hospitals, and grocery stores stay within a short drive south along I-45.
Things to do near New Waverly
Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Conroe supports boating, largemouth bass fishing, and swimming, and Lake Livingston adds room for larger boats and lakefront lounging. Venice on the Lake RV Park and Stow A Way Marina and RV Park put anglers within easy reach of ramps and docks.
On land, the Lone Star Hiking Trail runs roughly 128 miles of footpath through the Sam Houston National Forest, with trailheads and shorter loops accessible from around Huntsville State Park. Raven Hill campers can fish Lake Raven, launch a boat from the on-site ramp, or use the designated swim area.
Historic stops round out a trip. The Sam Houston Memorial Museum in nearby Huntsville covers the Republic of Texas period and pairs easily with a night at Raven Hill or Lochness RV Park.

Seasonal patterns and what to plan around
- spring
March - May
79° / 57°F 110 mmPeak season; state park sites fill months ahead
- summer
June - August
93° / 73°F 100 mmHot and humid; 50-amp sites needed to run AC
- fall
September - November
79° / 57°F 110 mmSeptember wettest; tropical remnants possible
- winter
December - February
61° / 39°F 95 mmMild days, cool nights; quietest camping season
The region has a humid subtropical climate. Winters are mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing, and summers are hot and humid, with highs frequently in the 90s Fahrenheit. Measurable snow is essentially absent.
Spring and fall are the strongest RV seasons. March through May brings wildflowers, comfortable temperatures, and heavy weekend demand at Huntsville State Park. Fall reopens that window after the summer heat breaks, typically by mid to late October. September ranks among the wettest months, and heavy downpours can temporarily close low-lying forest roads and trails.
Summer camping is workable but hot. Full-hookup sites with 50-amp service run air conditioning through afternoon peaks, and lake sites at Venice on the Lake RV Park and Stow A Way Marina and RV Park stay busy with boaters. Winter is the quietest stretch, with mild days good for hiking, though occasional cold fronts drop nighttime lows near freezing and prompt short-term freeze precautions for RV plumbing.

How to book campgrounds near New Waverly
Huntsville State Park is booked through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system. Texas State Parks open reservations up to 5 months in advance on a rolling basis, and the online system opens at 8:00 AM Central Time. Reserve online through the TPWD site or by phone with the state parks customer service center. A minimum two-night stay applies at overnight facilities on Friday and Saturday nights, and day passes should be reserved in advance to guarantee entry during busy weekends.
For Sam Houston National Forest sites such as Cagle Recreation Area, book through Recreation.gov. Private parks, including Majestic Pines RV Resort, Venice on the Lake RV Park, Stow A Way Marina and RV Park, and Lochness RV Park, take direct reservations through their own websites or phone lines and generally offer longer booking windows than the state park.
What to expect on-site
Huntsville State Park has 160 tent and RV campsites split across three camp areas near Lake Raven: Prairie Branch, Raven Hill, and Coloneh. Full- and partial-hookup RV sites are available, with the full-hookup loop in Raven Hill offering 20/30/50-amp service and drive lengths that can accommodate rigs up to 60 feet. The park's dump station is located in the Raven Hill camp area. Cell coverage inside the forest is inconsistent, so download maps before arrival.
Private lakefront parks in the area lean toward paved or gravel pads, 30/50-amp service, and shared amenities such as pools, boat ramps, and camp stores. Waterfront sites fill first, so request specifics when booking. Bring insect repellent from spring through fall, secure food from raccoons, and expect thick pine canopy that can reduce satellite reception at forested sites.

Payment is simple and secure. The deposit is released after drop-off once the host confirms the RV came back clean, undamaged, and on time. You'll never hand over cash or write checks. To avoid any deposit issues, do the pre-trip walk-through with your host, take timestamped photos at pickup and return, and refill propane and the fuel tank if your host requires it.

A cheap RV rental in New Waverly is one of the best family trip setups in Texas. With nightly rates starting near $125, Cagle Recreation Area sites at about $34, and Texas gas prices well below the national average, a family of four can do a long weekend for a fraction of a hotel-and-theme-park trip. Kids love the swimming beach at Double Lake, the boat ramp on Lake Conroe, and easy hikes on the Lone Star Trail. You're 50 miles from Houston attractions but sleeping under tall pines. Pro tip: book Sunday through Thursday for the lowest combined rates on both your RV rental and your campsite.
