Campgrounds and RV parks near Oak Leaf, TX

Joe Pool Lake anchors most outdoor plans at Loyd Park-Joe Pool Lake. Amenities include a swimming beach, a four-lane boat ramp with trailer parking, a boat dock, volleyball and softball fields, hiking, biking and equestrian trails, a paddling trail, and canoe and kayak rentals. A kayak paddling trail called the Walnut Creek Paddling Trail offers a route for paddlers of all skill levels. Beyond the lake, downtown Waxahachie offers historic architecture and the Ellis County Courthouse square, and the Dallas Zoo, Cedar Hill State Park, and AT&T Stadium in Arlington are all within about an hour of most Oak Leaf campgrounds. Families with younger kids often pair a lake day at Joe Pool with an afternoon in Grand Prairie or Cedar Hill.

North Texas has a long RV season. Spring, from March through May, brings wildflowers, mild temperatures, and the strongest thunderstorm activity of the year. Sites at Joe Pool fill quickly on spring weekends, and severe weather watches are common in the region, so renters should plan for occasional shelter-in-place events. Summer is hot and humid, with daytime highs at or above 80 degrees Fahrenheit for most of May through September and typically 22 days a year reaching 100 degrees or more. Lake campgrounds see peak demand around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends. Fall offers the most comfortable weather of the year and lighter crowds after Labor Day, with football weekends driving mid-week deals at private parks. Winters are mild by national standards, with a December through February average of about 49 degrees Fahrenheit and only around 1.6 inches of snow, but freezing overnight temperatures can happen anytime from November to March, and one or two nights a winter can drop to 20 degrees or lower, so renters should confirm whether water hookups are winterized before booking.

Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, mixed hardwood and cedar cover, and easy interstate access from I-35E and US-287. Most private parks near Oak Leaf cater to long-term residents alongside travelers, so sites tend to be level with full hookups but shade coverage varies. At Loyd Park, individual campsites are large, averaging about 1,000 square feet, and each one has a picnic table and pavilion, grill, and fire ring, with 221 individual and group campsites offering water, sewer, 30-amp and 50-amp service. Individual sites do not have sewer hookups at every site, but convenient dump stations are located near the park exit. Cell coverage is generally strong across the area, grocery and fuel stops are close, and dump stations are standard at the private parks.
