Campgrounds and RV parks near Olney, TX

Water activities dominate the region. Possum Kingdom Lake supports largemouth, striped, and white bass fishing, along with swimming, boating, water skiing, and scuba diving in its clear water. The park has a fishing pier, fish cleaning station, and boat ramp, and the Spanish Oaks area sits near the swim beach and marina store. On land, Possum Kingdom State Park covers roughly 1,530 acres in the Palo Pinto Mountains, with hiking and biking trails through the hills that surround the lake, plus picnicking, geocaching, and nature study. Shore fishing is available without a state license from inside the park. Olney itself offers small-town dining, fuel, and grocery stops, useful for restocking between trips out to the lake.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable RV seasons in this part of Texas. March through May brings warming temperatures, wildflowers, and the year's heaviest rainfall, so weather can shift quickly and thunderstorms are common. Fall, from September through November, cools off gradually and is a popular time for fishing and hiking with fewer crowds. Summer is hot, humid, and busy. Possum Kingdom State Park identifies June through August as busy every day of the week, and March through October as busy on weekends. Reservations fill well ahead during these windows. Afternoon highs regularly climb into the mid-90s, and the lake stays open for full swimming and boating. Winter is short and generally mild but variable, with cold fronts pushing lows near or below freezing. Shady Grove typically closes for the winter and reopens on March 1, and the Chaparral Trail camping loop closes December through February, so cool-season RVers should confirm which loops are open before booking.

Possum Kingdom State Park charges a daily entrance fee in addition to campsite fees, currently four dollars for adults with children twelve and under free. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., each standard campsite is limited to eight people, and campsite checkout is 2 p.m. Public consumption or display of alcoholic beverages is prohibited inside the park. Spanish Oaks is the premium RV area with 21 lakeside sites offering water and 20/30/50-amp electricity, while Shady Grove provides additional water-and-electric sites set back from the lake. Lakeview is a water-only camping area, and primitive walk-in sites and cabins are also available. Private parks in and around Olney generally offer standard full-hookup pads, level sites, and easier big-rig access. Cell service is reliable in town but can drop out along back roads between Olney and the lake.
