Paloma Creek South camping overview
Paloma Creek South is a census-designated place in eastern Denton County, Texas, sitting just south of U.S. Route 380 in the northern Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Its location puts RV travelers within easy reach of Lewisville Lake to the south and Lake Ray Roberts to the north, two of the largest reservoirs in the region and the anchors for most nearby camping.
RV options in the surrounding area range from lakeside parks to inland private grounds. The Retreat at Shady Creek and Shady Creek RV Park & Storage sit close to Paloma Creek South, while Hidden Cove Park offers a large lakeshore campground on Lewisville Lake with RV sites, screened shelters, cabins, and a full-service marina. Waggin Tail Ranch RV Park and Texas Lakes Ranch RV Park and Storage round out the nearby private options.
Because Paloma Creek South is inside the Metroplex, campers get lake recreation without long drives to groceries, fuel, or medical services, which is useful for families traveling with an RV rental.
Things to do near Paloma Creek South
Water recreation dominates the area. Lewisville Lake covers nearly 30,000 acres and draws boaters, anglers, and swimmers throughout the warm months, with a network of shoreline trails around the reservoir. Hidden Cove Park adds a sandy beachfront, bank fishing, horseshoe courts, volleyball, playgrounds, and a full-service marina with boat and watercraft rentals from its ship store and fueling dock.
Away from the water, families can drive to The Colony, Frisco, and Little Elm for shopping, restaurants, indoor attractions, and youth sports complexes. Lake Ray Roberts State Park to the north offers additional hiking, equestrian trails, and quieter swim beaches, and it works well as a day trip from a base near Paloma Creek South.

December - February
55° / 37°F 55 mmMild with occasional hard freezes and rare ice storms
Spring is the wettest stretch in North Texas, with May typically the rainiest month and a real risk of severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes. Campgrounds stay open, but low-lying lakeside loops can flood after heavy storms, and the Corps of Engineers park on Lewisville Lake sometimes closes sites when pool levels rise.
Summer is peak camping season on Lewisville Lake, with warm water and long daylight hours pulling heavy weekend crowds. Daytime highs commonly sit in the mid-90s Fahrenheit, so shaded sites and full hookups with reliable air conditioning matter. Reservations for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day should be locked in as soon as the six-month booking window opens.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and lighter crowds, making September through November a strong window for RV trips. Winter is mild by national standards but can deliver hard freezes and occasional ice storms; some private parks shift to reduced services, while the Corps campground on the lake remains reservation-only year-round.

How to book campgrounds near Paloma Creek South
Federal sites use one system. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates Hickory Creek Park on Lewisville Lake, and all its sites are by reservation only through Recreation.gov, not at the gatehouse. Recreation.gov uses a rolling six-month booking window that advances daily at 10 a.m. Eastern, and weekend summer sites and major holidays fill quickly at the release time.
Private parks near Paloma Creek South, including The Retreat at Shady Creek, Shady Creek RV Park & Storage, Waggin Tail Ranch RV Park, and Texas Lakes Ranch RV Park and Storage, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Hidden Cove Park is privately operated on Lewisville Lake and also books directly, and a paid entrance permit is required to enter the park in addition to any camping fee.
What to expect on the ground at Paloma Creek South
Most RV sites in the area are paved or gravel pull-throughs or back-ins with 30/50-amp electric and water; full hookups with sewer are common at private parks, while the Corps campground on Lewisville Lake offers water and electric with a shared dump station. Lewisville Lake water is turbid year-round with limited visibility, so plan on general lake swimming rather than snorkeling.
Winds off the lake can be strong out of the south, which affects awnings and tent setups at exposed lakeside loops. Cell coverage is generally good given the Metroplex location, and grocery stores, urgent care, and RV supply outlets are all within a short drive.
Summer heat is the main planning constraint. Shade is uneven across parks, biting insects appear near the shoreline at dusk, and pets should not be left in vehicles or unshaded pens during afternoon hours.

For the most popular spots, book 3-6 months ahead, especially Hidden Cove Park, Pilot Knoll, and Ray Roberts Lake State Park, which fill up fast on summer weekends and holidays. Texas State Parks open reservations 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks & Wildlife site, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks (like Hidden Cove) use Recreation.gov, also bookable up to 6 months out. For private parks like Shady Creek RV Park & Storage or Waterfront Hideaway Ranch, 2-4 weeks is usually enough outside of holidays. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before Memorial Day, July 4, or Labor Day to snag the prime lakefront sites the second they open.

Hot Paloma Creek South summers (June-September highs in the mid-90s and often triple digits) are totally manageable with a few smart moves. Pick an RV with dual roof AC units or shore power capability, then book a campground with 50-amp service like Shady Creek RV Park or Hidden Cove so both ACs can run full blast. Drive early in the morning to keep the engine cool and reduce strain on the dash AC, park with the awning side facing north or east, and use reflective windshield covers. Lewisville Lake is your built-in cool-down, swim, paddle, or rent a boat from Eagle Point Marina. Pro tip: pre-cool the RV with shore power for an hour before bedtime in July and August.
