Campgrounds and RV parks near Pilot Point, TX

Ray Roberts Lake is the main draw. Campers staying at Quail Run - Isle du Bois - Ray Roberts Lake State Park or Walnut - Johnson Branch - Ray Roberts Lake State Park get direct access to swimming beaches, boat ramps, and shoreline fishing. Anglers can fish for bass, catfish, and crappie with a valid Texas fishing license. On land, the park has a well-developed trail network. The 20-mile multiuse Greenbelt Corridor runs from the Ray Roberts Dam to Lake Lewisville along the Elm Fork Branch of the Trinity River, with 12 miles open to horse riders and 10 miles for hike and bike use only. Johnson Branch and Isle du Bois also have multiuse trails, some of which are paved. That makes both units practical for families with strollers or mixed-ability groups. Off-park, downtown Pilot Point offers a historic square, a working horse-country landscape, and easy day trips south into Denton.

North Texas has a long camping window, but each season has trade-offs. Spring brings green prairie and heavy rain, with most of the precipitation falling in May, averaging 142 mm. Storms can be severe, and low-lying trails may close temporarily. Heavy rains may result in closures in various areas of the Greenbelt, so checking the TPWD park home page or the park's Facebook page for the latest updates is recommended. Summer is peak season for water recreation. Swimming, boating, paddling, and shoreline fishing peak during long, warm days with water temperatures at their highest. Heat is intense, and summer weekends can hit capacity, so reservations should go in early. Fall cools quickly, and October is the month with the most rainfall, with rain falling for roughly 11 days and accumulating about 94 mm. Winter camping is viable with mild afternoons, but hunt closures can affect access. The entire Isle Du Bois unit is closed from 12pm January 15 and reopens at 8am on January 18 for the scheduled park hunt, so verify dates before booking a January trip.

Plan the arrival window carefully at the state park. The gate is open from 8am to 10pm, and late arrivals must call the park prior to 5pm on the arrival date for late arrival instructions. The gate code is only given to customers with overnight camping reservations that the park can confirm and to campers who have already registered. Day-use fees are separate from camping. Camping fees are in addition to daily per person entry fees, with children 12 and under entering free. Cell service is limited inside the park, and campers should download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. Denton County is under a quarantine to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer to other areas of the state, movement of firewood is restricted, and campers should buy firewood where they burn it. Private parks near Pilot Point tend to have stronger signal and easier late check-in.
