Camping near Point, Texas
Point sits on the southeastern shore of Lake Tawakoni, a 37,879-acre reservoir on the Sabine River, in Rains County about an hour east of Dallas. The town is a small lake community, and most trip planning centers on the reservoir itself: RV parks and marinas cluster along the shoreline, and the largest public land base is Lake Tawakoni State Park, a 376-acre state park in Hunt County about 11 miles north of Wills Point.
RV travelers have several options within a short drive of Point. Lake Tawakoni RV Campground and North Shore Landing RV Park, Cabins and Guest House sit on the north and west sides of the lake. Anchor Inn Marina and Resort combines shaded RV sites, rustic cabins, guest rooms, and tent sites with direct water access. Lake Tawakoni State Park offers the standard Texas State Parks mix of full-hookup and water/electric sites, and Hopkins RV Park provides a quieter inland alternative.
The lake is the main draw: fishing, boating, and swimming beaches dominate the itinerary for most visitors.
Things to do around Point
Fishing is the headline activity. Striped bass, hybrid striped bass, and white bass drive the fishery in open water, with hybrid stripers stocked annually by TPWD. Channel and blue catfish are abundant, and largemouth bass is also a popular sportfish. Crappie fishing can be good around standing timber, bridge pilings, and artificial fish attractors. A Texas fishing license is required for anglers 17 and older, though shoreline fishing inside a state park does not require a license.
Beyond fishing, Lake Tawakoni State Park anchors the non-boating options with nearly five miles of hiking and biking trails winding through post oak woodlands and a rich bird population to watch for. Swim beaches, kayak launches, and marina boat ramps ring the reservoir. The four-lane boat ramp at the state park is a common launch point for trailered boats.

The area follows a humid subtropical pattern: hot, muggy summers and cool, wet winters. Spring and summer are the busy season at Lake Tawakoni State Park, and holiday weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book up first. Reserve early if visiting in those windows.
Fishing seasons shape the shoulder months. Guides generally rate October and November as the top striper months, with March through May close behind as water warms and live bait produces well. Catches of trophy blue catfish are fairly common during winter months, and peak white bass months are February, May, June, and July, with a February creek run when white bass spawn.
Winters are quieter and colder, with occasional freezes. Some marinas run reduced hours, but state park campsites and most private RV parks stay open year-round. Severe thunderstorms and tornado risk peak in spring, so monitor forecasts closely from March through May.

How to book a site
Lake Tawakoni State Park uses the Texas State Parks reservation system. Standard campsites can be reserved up to five months in advance, and popular weekends in that window fill quickly. Reservations can be made online through the Texas State Parks reservation portal or by calling the Customer Service Center at (512) 389-8900. Group sites are booked by calling (512) 389-8920.
Private parks around the lake, including Lake Tawakoni RV Campground, North Shore Landing RV Park, Cabins and Guest House, Anchor Inn Marina and Resort, and Hopkins RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Lake Tawakoni RV Campground is a Thousand Trails property and follows that network's membership booking rules.
Book lakefront and full-hookup sites well ahead for spring and summer weekends.
What to expect on arrival
At Lake Tawakoni State Park, the gate is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and late arrivals must call the park before 5 p.m. on the arrival date for instructions. If a camper has not checked in by noon the day after the scheduled arrival, the remainder of the reservation is cancelled, so notify the park if delayed. A day-use fee applies per person 13 and older, in addition to campsite fees.
The Argentine Ant, an invasive species, has been identified in some campsites in the park. The ants do not sting, but campers should inspect vehicles, RVs, and gear before leaving and notify park staff if they see them.
Private RV parks around the lake generally offer full hookups, laundry, and lake access. Cell coverage is reliable across most of the shoreline, and the nearest full-service groceries and fuel are in Emory, Quinlan, and Greenville.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Point, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Point, TX?
An RV rental in Point, TX is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy Lake Tawakoni country. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $95 to $160 per night, campervans and Class C motorhomes between $150 and $260, and larger Class A motorhomes from $250 to $425. Because Point is a small lake community in Rains County, prices tend to be friendlier than what you'd pay closer to Dallas. For a cheap RV rental in Point, book midweek stays in March or October, avoid the First Monday Trade Days weekend in nearby Canton when rates spike, and consider towable trailers since they usually carry the lowest nightly rates. Pro tip: many hosts offer multi-night discounts for stays of 5+ nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Point%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Point, Texas?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Point for almost every rig on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or Class B license for motorhomes with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which is heavier than the vast majority of Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels listed on the platform. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens during the booking process so there's nothing extra to print or mail. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're set for your Lake Tawakoni getaway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection comes with my Point, TX RV rental?
Every RV rental in Point, TX booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can launch into your Lake Tawakoni trip with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort at checkout, the policy is set by RVezy, not the individual host. You'll see clear options ranging from basic to premium when you book. Whether you're driving the 65 miles from Dallas or exploring back roads near Emory and Quitman, you're covered with real support on call. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully if you're a first-time renter, the upgrade is usually well worth it for peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Point, TX RV booking?
Booking your Point RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. That means clear, consistent rules apply to every listing in the Lake Tawakoni area. There's a grace period after booking for a full refund, plus additional refund windows depending on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans stay protected. Because the policy is platform-wide, you won't see specific policy text on individual listings. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates, then use the grace period to firm up your plans with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Point, TX?
Absolutely, and Lake Tawakoni is a fantastic dog destination. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Point TX hosts offer, just toggle the "Pet-Friendly" filter on RVezy and message the host to confirm any size or breed preferences. Lake Tawakoni State Park welcomes leashed pets on all trails and at campsites (just not inside park buildings), and Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni is also dog-friendly. The 5-mile shoreline trail system through post oak woodlands is shaded and gentle, perfect for morning walks with your pup. Pro tip: summer pavement gets hot fast in East Texas, so plan walks before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m., and pack a collapsible water bowl, ticks and chiggers are common here too.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/pets-in-parksCan my RV be delivered to a campground near Point, TX?
Yes, RV delivery Point TX is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed or driven a motorhome. Many RVezy hosts in the Lake Tawakoni area will drive the RV directly to Lake Tawakoni State Park, Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni, Sky Point RV Park, or even a private property in Emory, Quitman, or West Tawakoni. They'll level it, hook up water, sewer, and electric, and walk you through every system from the awning to the propane stove. Just use the "Delivery" filter when you search and message the host with your destination address. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer for first-time renters, you skip the stressful drive and step straight into vacation mode.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-tawakoni/fees-facilities/campsitesHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Point, TX?

Dallas is about 65 miles west (roughly 75 minutes), Tyler State Park is about 50 miles south (about 1 hour), Cooper Lake State Park is about 30 miles north (40 minutes), Caddo Lake State Park near the Louisiana border is about 165 miles east (3 hours), and Hot Springs, Arkansas is roughly 290 miles. Most RVezy hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles typically running $0.30 to $0.50 each. Pro tip: message the host before booking to estimate your route mileage honestly.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cooper-lakeWhere are the best campgrounds near Point, TX for an RV trip?
RV camping Point TX puts you right next to several excellent options on or near Lake Tawakoni's 37,879-acre reservoir. Lake Tawakoni State Park (Wills Point, about 15 miles south) offers full hookup, water-and-electric, and primitive sites across the Spring Point and White Deer Reach loops, with a sandy swim beach and a four-lane boat ramp. Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni on Rains County Road 1470 in Point itself spans 480 acres with full hookups, a marina, pool, and hot tub. Sky Point RV Park sits right on the lake with shaded RV pads, tent sites, and a boat launch. Cooper Lake State Park's South Sulphur Unit is also under an hour north. Pro tip: state park sites open for reservation 5 months ahead and fill fast for spring weekends.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-tawakoni/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip to Point, TX?
The sweet spot for RV rental Texas trips to Point is mid-March through May and mid-September through early November, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 80 degree range and humidity drops. Summer (June through August) is hot and humid with highs near 95 to 100 degrees, but it's prime time for swimming, boating, and catfishing on Lake Tawakoni, just plan for AC-heavy nights. Winters are mild (40s to 60s) with occasional cold snaps, making it a quiet, affordable shoulder season and a great time to spot bald eagles, since Rains County is known as the bald eagle capital of Texas. Pro tip: avoid the first weekend of each month if you don't want crowds, Canton's First Monday Trade Days draws thousands.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never rented an RV before. Is Point, TX a good place to start?
Point is honestly one of the easier places in Texas to be a first-time renter. The roads around Lake Tawakoni are flat, rural, and low-traffic, very different from city driving in Dallas or Houston. Your RVezy host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery covering the leveling jacks, water and sewer hookups, propane, generator (if equipped), slide-outs, and awning, and you'll have their number plus 24/7 roadside assistance on speed dial. Lake Tawakoni State Park has wide, paved pads that are very forgiving to back into. Pro tip: if you're nervous about towing or driving, request delivery, the host parks and sets up everything, and your first RV trip becomes a pure relaxation experience.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-tawakoniWhat if something goes wrong with my RV during my Point, TX trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing throughout Texas. Your host is also typically a phone call or message away and knows their RV inside and out, so most small issues (a tripped breaker, a finicky water pump) get solved in minutes. Point is within an hour of full-service RV repair shops in Greenville and Tyler if anything bigger comes up. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave the driveway, that 30-second habit saves a lot of stress later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Point, TX RV rental across state lines?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most Point RV rentals, and it opens up some of the best road trip routes in the region. Popular runs include west into New Mexico (Carlsbad Caverns is about 600 miles), east to Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas (280 miles), south to the Gulf Coast and Galveston (300 miles), or north into Oklahoma's Beavers Bend State Park (175 miles). Just note that travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy bookings because insurance and protection coverage end at the border. If you're planning a longer multi-state trip, message the host before booking to confirm and discuss mileage. Pro tip: I-30 east from Point gets you to Little Rock in under 4 hours, a fun weekend loop.
nps.gov/hosp/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for an RV rental in Point, TX?
Realistic fuel budgeting makes your Lake Tawakoni trip way smoother. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but will drop your tow vehicle's mileage to about 10 to 14 MPG. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes run 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A motorhomes typically get 6 to 10 MPG. Texas gas prices tend to run below the national average, and Point has fuel at the FM 47 and Highway 276 intersection, with larger truck-friendly stations in Emory (10 minutes east) and Quinlan (15 minutes west). For a typical weekend at Lake Tawakoni from Dallas, budget $80 to $150 in fuel for a mid-size motorhome. Pro tip: fill up in Emory before heading to the campground, prices climb at lake-adjacent stops.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Point, TX?
Lake Tawakoni State Park campsites open for reservation through Texas Parks & Wildlife exactly 5 months in advance, and weekend spots in spring (March to May) and around July 4th and Labor Day go within hours. For those dates, set a calendar reminder and book the morning the window opens. Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni and Sky Point RV Park typically have more last-minute flexibility, especially midweek. From April 15 to September 15, Thousand Trails limits stays to 14 days per site. Cooper Lake State Park to the north is a great backup if Tawakoni fills up. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) at Lake Tawakoni State Park almost always have availability, even in peak season, and you'll have the swim beach nearly to yourself.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-tawakoni/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Point, TX?
Driving conditions around Point are some of the friendliest in Texas for RVs. The terrain is gently rolling with no mountain grades, roads are straight and well-maintained, and traffic is light outside of weekend afternoons on FM 47 and Highway 276. The main hazards to watch for are spring thunderstorms (March through May can bring hail and high winds, so monitor weather and pull off if needed), occasional deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads, and Canton's First Monday Trade Days weekend, which clogs Highway 19 and I-20 the Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month. Pro tip: avoid driving an RV through downtown Dallas during rush hour, take I-20 east from the metro instead of cutting through, and you'll be at the lake stress-free.
drivetexas.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Point, TX?
Campgrounds around Point are well-equipped for any size rig. Lake Tawakoni State Park offers both full-hookup sites (water, sewer, 50-amp electric) in the Spring Point loop and water-and-electric sites in White Deer Reach, plus a dump station for primitive campers, fish cleaning station, and the Lake Tawakoni Trading Post for ice, firewood, and bait. Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni offers full hookups, a pool, hot tub, clubhouse, and marina. Sky Point RV Park has full-hookup sites and a boat launch directly on the lake. Potable water fills are available at every park entrance. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator, a few of the older sites at Thousand Trails have hookups set a bit further from the pad than at newer parks.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-tawakoni/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat features come with a motorhome rental in Point, TX?
Most motorhome rental Point TX listings on RVezy come fully equipped for the lake life. Expect a queen or king bed, full kitchen with refrigerator, freezer, stove, microwave, and often a convection oven, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, AC and furnace, exterior awning, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many include a TV, WiFi hotspot or cell-booster, outdoor camp chairs, and a propane grill. Class A and C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 8. For Lake Tawakoni trips, look for hosts who include kayaks, fishing gear, or bikes as add-ons, perfect since the lake's known for crappie, catfish, and striped bass. Pro tip: filter by "Sleeps" count and message the host to confirm linens, cookware, and a generator are included, those make or break a relaxing trip.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-tawakoniWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Point, TX RV rental?
Hosts in the Point area offer some genuinely useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include delivery and setup ($75 to $200 depending on distance, often free within 25 miles), pre-stocked propane and full water tanks, linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), generator use (sometimes a flat fee, sometimes per hour), kayaks and SUPs (great for Lake Tawakoni's calm coves), fishing gear, bikes, outdoor furniture, and pet cleaning fees if traveling with dogs. Most hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.50 each. Pickup and dropoff times are set by the host, but many flex by an hour or two if you ask politely. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus linens plus kayaks for a true "just show up" Lake Tawakoni weekend.
tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/recreational/lakes/tawakoni/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Point, TX?
Payment is handled entirely through RVezy's secure platform, so you'll never need to hand cash or write a check to the host. You pay your booking total at the time of reservation, and the security deposit is separate from the booking payment, it's a hold placed on your card before the trip and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Deposits in the Point area typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. To avoid any issues, take photos and a quick video of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup, return it on time with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and stay within the mileage allowance. Pro tip: do the walkthrough with the host and ask questions, that 15 minutes prevents most deposit disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight near Point, TX outside a campground?
If you're road-tripping through and need a quick overnight, where to park an RV in Point comes down to a few solid options. Texas Transportation Code 545.411 allows you to park up to 24 hours at any TxDOT rest area, roadside picnic area, or scenic overlook, with the nearest rest areas along I-20 near Wills Point and along I-30 near Greenville. Walmart in Greenville (about 25 miles north) is traditionally RV-friendly with manager permission, and the Love's Travel Stop in Sulphur Springs has overnight RV spaces. Camping setup (chairs, awnings, grills) isn't allowed at rest areas, just sleep inside. Pro tip: for a real night's rest with hookups, Lake Tawakoni State Park usually has a last-minute site, and it's only $15 to $25 to upgrade from a parking lot to lakeside sunrise.
