Campgrounds and RV parks near Runaway Bay, TX

Lake Bridgeport is a popular freshwater fishing destination, with largemouth bass, crappie, hybrid bass, and sand bass among the most commonly caught gamefish. The lake also supports boating, sailing, water skiing, and swimming, with multiple public boat ramps around the shoreline. Runaway Bay itself has a city marina and public ramps for launching a boat or kayak brought in with the RV. Boaters should note that zebra mussels have invaded the reservoir, so cleaning, draining, and drying trailers between water bodies is required by law. Off the water, families can drive to the City of Bridgeport's Northwest OHV Park, which contains more than 300 acres of trails for off-highway vehicles, or head about 30 miles west to Fort Richardson State Park in Jacksboro for hiking and historic sites.

North Central Texas has hot summers and mild winters, and the camping season effectively runs from spring through late fall. At Bay Landing, service is limited during winter months, and full campground amenities run March through October. Smaller private parks in the area tend to stay open year-round but scale back pool, clubhouse, and activity programming outside the warm season. Spring is prime time for wildflowers, bass fishing, and comfortable daytime temperatures, though it is also the peak severe-weather season. Travelers should monitor watches and warnings for thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes from March through May. Summer brings reliable lake weather with highs frequently above 95 degrees, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are the busiest booking windows. Fall shoulder season, roughly late September through early November, is often the best combination of open sites, mild temperatures, and lower humidity. Late fall through February can bring occasional freezes, brief winter storms, and lake fog, so freshwater hoses and tank heaters are worth packing if traveling in that window.

Expect a mix of established resort-style parks and smaller rural properties. Bay Landing caters to a variety of camping styles, from RVs to tents and cabins, with sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. The park offers private lake access for fishing or kayaking, along with a pool and clubhouse that make it a practical fit for families, though shade is limited and lake access is rocky in places. Road conditions on the final approach can be rough. Reviewers describe the road into the Bay Landing camping area as washboard and rutted with potholes, so drivers of long or low-clearance rigs should slow down at the entrance off US-380. Cell coverage on the lake side of Runaway Bay is generally usable on major carriers, and groceries, propane, and fuel are available in Bridgeport a few minutes south. Pets are welcome at most parks with leash rules in effect.
