Sand Springs camping overview
Sand Springs is a small unincorporated community in Howard County, Texas, sitting just east of Big Spring along Interstate 20 in the semiarid West Texas plains. RV travelers use the area as a convenient stopover between Dallas-Fort Worth and El Paso, with easy access to the larger amenities and services of Big Spring a few miles west.
The surrounding landscape is classic Rolling Plains and Edwards Plateau country, characterized by mesquite, cactus, and long views under wide skies. The elevation is roughly 2,400 to 2,500 feet, which moderates summer nights compared with lower parts of the state. Private RV parks in and around Big Spring supply the overnight infrastructure, since the nearest state park, Big Spring State Park atop Scenic Mountain, is day-use only and does not offer campsites. Options in the area include Big Star RV Park, Elite Cabins and RV Park, Happy Trails RV Park, RV Big Spring Texas, and Suburban East RV Park.
Things to do near Sand Springs
Big Spring State Park, a short drive west, protects a 382-acre mesa with a paved three-mile loop road that climbs Scenic Mountain and delivers wide views across the plains from a 200-foot bluff. The park is day-use only, with hiking, biking, picnicking, and a historic Civilian Conservation Corps pavilion built in 1934 and 1935.
Comanche Trail Park in Big Spring covers 400 acres and contains the natural spring that gave the city its name, a fishing lake, an 18-hole golf course, two disc golf courses, a limestone amphitheater, and hike and bike trails. Moss Creek Lake, about 25 minutes east of town, offers fishing, boating, a swimming beach, and nature trails. The Heritage Museum and Hangar 25 Air Museum round out rainy-day options in Big Spring.

The Sand Springs and Big Spring area is a year-round RV destination, but shoulder seasons are the most comfortable. Spring, from March through May, brings mild highs, wildflowers, and generally pleasant camping conditions, though April is the windiest month and dust storms are possible. Fall, from September through November, is also popular, with warm days, cooler nights, and September historically the wettest month of the year.
Summers are long and hot, with July and August averaging highs in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and low humidity. RVers who visit in summer should look for shaded or full-hookup sites so air conditioning can run reliably. Winters are short but can turn cold and windy, and light snowfall is possible from November through March. Big Spring State Park operates as day-use only, so all overnight stays are at private RV parks in the surrounding area, which typically stay open year-round.
Booking RV sites near Sand Springs
There are no state or federal campgrounds in the immediate Sand Springs area, so reservations go directly through private RV park operators rather than a central portal. Big Star RV Park, Elite Cabins and RV Park, Happy Trails RV Park, RV Big Spring Texas, and Suburban East RV Park all take bookings by phone or through their own websites. Calling ahead is the most reliable option, especially for longer stays, since many local parks host oilfield and pipeline workers on monthly contracts and full-hookup availability can be tight.
Big Spring State Park does not offer camping. For nearby state park camping, Monahans Sandhills State Park to the west and San Angelo State Park to the south both book through Texas Parks and Wildlife up to five months in advance.
What to expect at Sand Springs RV parks
RV parks in the Sand Springs and Big Spring area are practical, road-friendly stops rather than resort destinations. Expect level gravel or paved pads, back-in and pull-through sites, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, on-site laundry, and clean restrooms and showers at most parks. Long-term monthly guests are common because of the local energy industry, so overnight travelers should confirm availability in advance.
The landscape is open and largely treeless, so shade is limited and afternoon sun and wind can be strong. Cell coverage along the Interstate 20 corridor is generally good. Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Big Spring a few minutes west. Local water in Big Spring has been under advisories in the past, so travelers may want to top up tanks from filtered sources or carry drinking water.
