Camping near Sanger, Texas
Sanger sits along I-35 in Denton County, about an hour north of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and roughly 10 miles north of Denton. The town serves as a western gateway to Ray Roberts Lake, a 29,000-acre reservoir with a state park managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. That mix of interstate access and lake recreation makes it a practical base for RV travelers heading between DFW and Oklahoma.
Private RV parks cluster along the I-35 corridor near town. Wagon Master RV Park and Alpaca Farm and Sanger / Denton North KOA Journey are the closest options for hookups, while Lone Oak RV Park, Tejano Ranch RV Park, and Texas Lakes Ranch RV Park and Storage add capacity within a short drive. These parks typically offer full hookups suited to larger rigs.
For lake-adjacent state park camping, Ray Roberts Lake State Park has nine units. Three offer overnight facilities: Johnson Branch on the north shore, Isle du Bois on the south shore, and Jordan on the east side, home to Lone Star Lodge and Marina.
Things to do around Sanger
Ray Roberts Lake anchors most trips. Boating, swimming, and stand-up paddleboarding are options on the water, along with fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and white bass. Lake Ray Roberts Marina in the Sanger unit is a full-service marina with boat storage, a repair shop, boat and slip rentals, fuel, fishing licenses, bait, and groceries.
Land-based activities are equally varied. The 20-mile Greenbelt Corridor runs from the Ray Roberts Dam to Lake Lewisville along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, with 12 miles open to horse riders and 10 miles reserved for hike and bike use. Equestrian camping is available inside the state park for guests traveling with horses.
Off-lake, day trips run south into Denton for restaurants and the university district, and further into Fort Worth for the Stockyards or Dallas for museums and pro sports.

North Texas has a long camping season, but shoulder months are the sweet spot. Spring brings wildflowers and the highest rainfall totals of the year, along with the strongest severe-weather and tornado risk. White bass fishing peaks in spring during the spawning run up tributaries, drawing anglers to the tributary arms of the lake.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the mid-90s and stretches of triple-digit heat. Sites at the state park still book heavily on summer weekends because families use the swim beach and marina, and shade is limited at many hookup loops.
Fall delivers the most reliable weather: warm afternoons, cool nights, lower rainfall than spring, and thinner crowds after Labor Day. Winter is mild by national standards but windy, with occasional hard freezes and a small chance of ice or light snow. Ray Roberts Lake State Park often reaches capacity on weekends and holidays, and the park recommends reservations for both camping and day use.

Booking a site near Sanger
Private RV parks in and around Sanger, including Wagon Master RV Park and Alpaca Farm, Sanger / Denton North KOA Journey, Lone Oak RV Park, Tejano Ranch RV Park, and Texas Lakes Ranch RV Park and Storage, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Weekly and monthly stays are common, so book early for long-haul or work-travel stays.
For Ray Roberts Lake State Park, reservations go through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Most overnight camping reservations can be made up to five months in advance on a rolling basis, with the booking window opening at 8 a.m. Central Time. Day passes open one month ahead.
Changing or cancelling five or more days before arrival carries a penalty of the lower of a set administrative fee or the amount paid. Reducing nights within five days of arrival incurs a per-night penalty capped at a small maximum. Book the popular Isle du Bois sites the minute the window opens for holiday weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Sanger itself is small, so plan to stock up in Denton or at the town's grocery and hardware stores before heading to the lake. Cell coverage along I-35 is strong; expect it to drop in places inside the state park units.
Inside Ray Roberts Lake State Park, main roads are paved and generally big-rig accessible, and campgrounds offer a mix of water-and-electric and primitive sites. The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and campers arriving after office hours should call ahead for late-arrival instructions and check the posted available-sites list at headquarters.
One local rule matters for RVers: Denton County is under a quarantine to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer, so moving firewood is restricted and campers should buy firewood where they burn it.

No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required, even for Class A motorhomes. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform once you book. Yes, every RV rental in Sanger booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV, so you can pull into Isle du Bois at Ray Roberts Lake State Park without stressing about a stray branch or a tight backup. During checkout you'll choose the protection level that fits your trip, whether you're heading to a quick weekend at the KOA or a longer loop through the Hill Country. Booking your Sanger RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets and manages the cancellation policy. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ray-roberts-lakeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Sanger?
Yes, RV delivery in Sanger is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Ray Roberts Lake State Park (Isle du Bois or Johnson Branch Unit), the Sanger/Denton North KOA Journey, or your driveway in Denton, Krugerville, or Pilot Point. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see which Sanger hosts offer it, then message them with your campsite number to confirm the fee, which is usually based on mileage from their location.

Pro tip: late October brings beautiful Cross Timbers fall color around Isle du Bois plus dramatically lower campground crowds.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Sanger?
Yes, and Sanger is a friendly launch point in Texas for first time renting an RV. Most local hosts give a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, the awning, slide-outs, dump procedures, and parking-lot driving practice if you'd like. The roads around town, like FM 455 to Ray Roberts Lake and the Interstate 35 service roads, are wide, flat, and well-signed. If you're nervous about merging onto I-35 toward Dallas and Fort Worth, choose a Class B campervan rental in Sanger or a small travel trailer for an easier first experience. Your host stays reachable by message throughout the trip, so help is always one tap away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RV rental in Sanger booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're stuck on Interstate 35 near Denton, on FM 455 heading to the lake, or deep on a Hill Country detour. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns. Your host is also just a message away for quick troubleshooting on things like the generator, water pump, or AC. Save both the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave Sanger and you'll feel ready for anything.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Sanger RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy bookings in Sanger, so you can point the rig toward Oklahoma's Lake Murray (about 90 miles north), Hot Springs, Arkansas, or Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Just confirm out-of-state travel with your host in a quick pre-booking message so they can note your route. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because the insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border. Stick to US adventures and you've got the entire Lone Star State plus surrounding regions to explore from your Sanger starting point.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Sanger RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on an RV road trip from Sanger, but it's easy to budget once you know your numbers. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A coaches around 6 to 8 MPG, campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck-pulled travel trailer roughly 10 to 13 MPG. Texas gas prices typically run below the US average, with stations along Interstate 35 in Sanger and nearby Denton often among the cheaper stops. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C at around $3.00 per gallon, expect to spend roughly $100 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Buc-ee's in Denton before heading north for both price and clean restrooms.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sanger?
For Ray Roberts Lake State Park (both Isle du Bois and Johnson Branch Units), reserve through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system up to 5 months in advance, and aim for at least 8 to 12 weeks ahead for any spring or summer weekend. Holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day book out the moment the window opens. Private parks like Sanger/Denton North KOA Journey usually have more last-minute availability, often bookable 1 to 2 weeks out. Pro tip: weekday stays at Isle du Bois are easy to grab even in peak season, so a Tuesday-to-Thursday lake escape is a smart move.
texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Sanger?
Driving around Sanger is refreshingly easy compared to most Texas RV launch points. The town sits right on Interstate 35 about 50 miles north of Dallas, with wide service roads, flat terrain, and minimal urban traffic once you're north of Denton. Watch for two things: spring severe weather (April through June can bring thunderstorms, hail, and occasional tornado warnings, so check the National Weather Service Fort Worth forecast before driving), and ongoing I-35 construction zones between Denton and Sanger that can narrow lanes. Avoid driving through downtown Dallas or Fort Worth in a big rig during weekday rush hour (7 to 9 AM, 4 to 7 PM). Stick to the rural FM roads heading to Ray Roberts and you'll feel relaxed and confident.
drivetexas.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds around Sanger?
Campgrounds near Sanger are well-equipped and modern. Ray Roberts Lake State Park's Isle du Bois Unit offers 30/50 amp electric, water hookups, clean restrooms with hot showers, a dump station near the entrance, and a paved trail along the lake. Sanger/Denton North KOA Journey has full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp), Wi-Fi, a pool, laundry, and concrete pads. Need to dump or fill freshwater on your way out of town? Both KOA and the state park typically welcome day-use dump access for a small fee. Pro tip: fill your freshwater tank before leaving the campground since rural pull-offs rarely have potable water.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ray-roberts-lake/fees-facilitiesWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Sanger?
Sanger RV rentals come fully loaded for comfortable Texas adventures. Expect a real bed (queen or king in most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, three-burner propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a wet bath or full bathroom with a toilet and shower. Air conditioning is standard and essential for North Texas summers, and most rigs include a TV, USB ports, and an onboard generator or shore-power capability. Many motorhome rentals in Sanger sleep 4 to 8 people with seatbelted travel positions for each rider. Some hosts add extras like camp chairs, outdoor rugs, or a starter kit of dishes. Always check the listing's amenities list and message the host with any must-haves.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sanger,TexasWhat add-ons and mileage policies should I expect when I rent an RV in Sanger?
Sanger hosts offer popular add-ons that make a family RV trip in Sanger much smoother: generator use (often $3 to $5 per hour beyond an included allotment), linens and towels packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor mats, kitchen kits, bike racks, and BBQ grills. Mileage policies vary, with many hosts including 100 to 150 free miles per day and charging $0.30 to $0.50 per extra mile, while some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage perfect for longer loops to Austin or Broken Bow. Pickup and drop-off times are set by each host and listed on the page. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a kitchen kit so you can roll into Ray Roberts Lake State Park and start camping in minutes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sanger,TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Sanger RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay the full booking total to RVezy at checkout using a credit or debit card, and the funds are held safely until your trip begins, so the host doesn't receive payment until you've picked up the RV. A refundable security deposit is held separately and pre-authorized on your card before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig). It is only used if there's damage beyond the included protection, excessive mileage, or extra cleaning needed. The deposit is released after the host inspects the RV at return. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off in Sanger so the condition is clearly documented and your deposit comes back fast.
