Campgrounds near Shepherd, Texas
Shepherd sits in San Jacinto County in the Piney Woods of East Texas, roughly an hour north of Houston along U.S. 59. The town works as a practical base for two big outdoor draws: the Sam Houston National Forest, which stretches west and south of town, and Lake Livingston, one of the largest reservoirs entirely within Texas.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Deep Waters RV Park, Camp Krenari, New Adventure RV Park and Horse Hotel, LLC, and Browders Marina RV Park and Campground sit close to Shepherd, and Woodsy Hollow Campground and RV Resort is a short drive out. These private parks generally handle bookings directly by phone or website.
For public land, Lake Livingston State Park lies just north near Livingston and books through the Texas State Parks reservation system. The Sam Houston National Forest has three developed campgrounds, Cagle, Double Lake, and Stubblefield Lake, all booked through Recreation.gov.
Things to do near Shepherd
Lake Livingston drives most water-based plans. The reservoir is known for white bass and blue catfish, with largemouth bass, striped bass, and crappie also caught. Public boat ramps sit around the lake, and Lake Livingston State Park offers boat ramps, fish cleaning stations, and a fishing pier.
On land, the Sam Houston National Forest offers the Lone Star Hiking Trail, a roughly 96-mile main footpath that extends to about 128 miles when loop trails are included, making it the longest continuous hiking trail in Texas. Big Creek Scenic Area, roughly six miles west of Shepherd, has short loop trails through pine-hardwood forest but does not allow camping.
Families also use Double Lake Recreation Area for swimming, a concession stand, and calm-water paddling.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Shepherd. Winters are short and mild, with an average winter temperature near 52°F, while summers are hot and humid, often pushing into the mid to upper 90s. Mid-February redbud and early March dogwood blossoms bring color across the national forest.
Deer hunting season in the Sam Houston National Forest runs into the late fall and winter, with November and December as the core months. During that period, camping along the Lone Star Hiking Trail is restricted to designated camps, and hi-vis clothing is recommended for hikers. Outside hunting season, primitive camping is allowed along most of the trail.
Heavy rain events can affect access, and the Sam Houston Ranger District recommends calling ahead during wet spells for current trail and campground status. Lake Livingston State Park is undergoing a phased improvements project expected to run into September 2026, and some camping areas may be closed during a stay.

How to book
For state and federal sites, book online in advance. Lake Livingston State Park uses the Texas State Parks reservation system, with reservations available online or by calling (512) 389-8900, and the booking window runs up to five months ahead. Reservations that include a Friday or Saturday night require both nights as a two-night minimum. If a camper does not check in by noon the day after the scheduled arrival, the rest of the reservation may be cancelled.
Cagle, Double Lake, and Stubblefield Lake in the Sam Houston National Forest are booked through Recreation.gov. Weekend sites at Double Lake and the state park fill quickly in spring and fall, so book early.
Private parks near Shepherd, including Deep Waters RV Park, Camp Krenari, New Adventure RV Park and Horse Hotel, LLC, Browders Marina RV Park and Campground, and Woodsy Hollow Campground and RV Resort, take reservations directly through their operators.
What to expect on arrival
Site setups vary. Cagle Recreation Area on Lake Conroe has 48 spurs with electric, water, and sewer connections, plus hot showers and a boat ramp. Lake Livingston State Park offers full-hookup sites, sites with water and electric, water-only sites, and screened shelters, with some accessible options. Private parks near Shepherd typically offer full hookups suitable for larger rigs.
Bring water, insect repellent, and a plan for heat. Mosquitoes are common, and high summer heat and humidity should factor into any daytime activity. Alligators live in and around Lake Livingston, so keep pets leashed and children away from shorelines and quiet coves.
Cell service is reliable at established parks and thinner along forest trails. A day-use fee applies at national forest recreation areas in addition to camping fees.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Shepherd, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Shepherd, TX?
RV rental in Shepherd is one of the most affordable ways to explore the East Texas Piney Woods and Lake Livingston. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs range $250 to $400 per night, depending on age, season, and amenities. To save on your Shepherd RV trip, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months of March, April, October, or early November when daytime highs sit in the 70s, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: searching travel trailers within a 30-mile radius of Cleveland, Coldspring, or Livingston often unlocks cheap RV rental Shepherd options with delivery straight to Lake Livingston State Park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Shepherd, TX?
Good news: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Shepherd for almost every rig on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license if the motorhome or combined rig exceeds 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and the vast majority of campervans, travel trailers, Class C motorhomes, and even most Class A rentals fall well under that limit. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification is handled right through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you are road-ready for your Lake Livingston adventure.
dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/classes-driver-licensesWhat's included for protection and peace of mind on my Shepherd RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Shepherd comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit Highway 59 and the back roads to Sam Houston National Forest with confidence. During checkout, you choose the coverage level that fits your trip (Standard, Plus, or Premium), and that protection helps cover accidental damage to the RV based on the plan you select. Roadside assistance is included with every plan, so if you get a flat on FM 2025 heading to Double Lake or need a jump-start at a Lake Livingston campsite, help is just a phone call away. Full plan details are available on the RVezy insurance and protection page.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Shepherd trip plans change?
Booking your RV rental in Shepherd is low-risk. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and the policy you see at checkout applies to your booking. Cancellation terms, refund windows, and any grace period are shown clearly during checkout and in your booking confirmation. If a hurricane, tropical storm, or other natural disaster impacts East Texas (June through November is peak tropical season), RVezy support reviews affected bookings and works with guests directly. Pro tip: book early for spring wildflower season and fall color along the Trinity River, and review the cancellation terms before you confirm so you know exactly where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Shepherd, TX RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Shepherd is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see plenty of campervans, travel trailers, and motorhomes whose owners welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you arrive, you've got great options: Lake Livingston State Park allows leashed pets on trails and at campsites (a current rabies vaccination certificate is required), and Sam Houston National Forest permits dogs on the Lone Star Hiking Trail (leashes are required in developed recreation areas like Double Lake). Pets are not allowed inside state park buildings or on designated swim beaches, so plan lake cool-offs at pet-friendly shoreline spots instead.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-livingston/park_infoCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Shepherd?
Yes, RV delivery in Shepherd is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip the towing and driving. Many local hosts deliver and fully set up at Lake Livingston State Park, Double Lake Recreation Area, Wolf Creek Park, or a private property in the Piney Woods. They'll level the rig, hook up power and water, lower the awning, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host's location, with many hosts offering flat-rate delivery to nearby parks. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your campsite number, and your motorhome rental Shepherd experience is basically vacation-ready before you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20TexasHow far can I drive from Shepherd, and is there an unlimited mileage option?
You've got the whole Lone Star State at your wheel from Shepherd. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many include 100 to 150 free miles per night with reasonable overage fees, while some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage (especially on travel trailers). Popular Shepherd RV trip routes include Houston (about 60 miles south), Galveston Beach (about 110 miles), Big Thicket National Preserve (about 45 miles east), Austin (about 180 miles west), and San Antonio (about 250 miles southwest). Quick day trips include Huntsville State Park (about 35 miles) and Sam Rayburn Reservoir (about 90 miles). Pro tip: message the host before booking with your rough itinerary and they can quote a custom mileage package if needed.

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to best campgrounds near Shepherd. Lake Livingston State Park (Pin Oak, Piney Shores, and Red Oak Loops) offers full and partial hookup sites just 15 miles north. On The Lake RV & Cabin Resort and Wolf Creek Park both sit on Lake Livingston with waterfront hookups, and Browder's Marina on the southern tip of the lake offers 56 RV sites with full hookups. Insider tip: book Lake Livingston State Park five months ahead for spring and fall weekends — they fill up fast.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-livingston/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Shepherd?
The sweet spot for RV camping Shepherd is mid-March through May and again from October through early December, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s and low 80s. Summer (June through August) is hot and humid with highs around 95°F and a heat index that can climb past 110°F, so plan for shaded sites, lake swims, and rigs with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild (highs in the upper 50s to low 60s, occasional dips into the 30s overnight), which makes Shepherd a fantastic year-round destination, especially compared to colder northern states. Pro tip: late October brings golden fall color along the Lone Star Hiking Trail and far fewer mosquitoes.
weather.gov/hgx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I get help figuring everything out?
First time renting an RV in Shepherd? You're going to feel well supported. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup (or at your delivery location), showing you how to operate the slide-outs, awning, generator, water system, propane, AC, and the all-important holding tanks. You can also message the host directly from the listing page before booking, no commitment required. RVezy's Help Center and customer support are available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: ask your host for their recommended grocery stop (most will point you to the H-E-B in Cleveland, about 15 miles south) and their favorite local boat ramp on Lake Livingston.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002255814-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my Shepherd RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Shepherd includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes sideways on US-59, FM 2025, or deep inside Sam Houston National Forest, one phone call connects you to dispatch and a local service provider. Your host is also typically reachable by message or phone for quick troubleshooting (think: which switch turns on the water pump), and RVezy customer support is available around the clock too. Pro tip: snap a few photos of your hookups and breaker panel during the walkthrough so you have visual references if you need to call for help later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Shepherd RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Cross-state RV road trips from Shepherd are absolutely allowed and a fantastic way to see the South. Many guests head east to Louisiana for New Orleans (about 280 miles), north into Arkansas, or west toward New Mexico and Colorado. Give your host a heads-up about your route during booking so they can confirm mileage and any state-specific notes. Important: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage does not extend south of the border. Pro tip: a classic Shepherd-based loop heads north to Caddo Lake, then back through Tyler and the Davy Crockett National Forest for some of the prettiest piney-woods driving in Texas.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much will gas cost?
Budget realistically and you'll have no surprises on your RV road trip from Shepherd. Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, campervans (Class B) hit 16 to 22 MPG, and trucks towing travel trailers usually pull 10 to 13 MPG. Texas consistently has some of the cheapest gas in the U.S., often $0.30 to $0.60 below the national average. Fill up in Cleveland or Livingston where prices tend to be lowest (the Buc-ee's in Madisonville, about 50 miles northwest, is a legendary, slightly-out-of-the-way fuel stop). Pro tip: most Shepherd-area campgrounds are within 30 miles of each other, so a tank lasts longer than you'd think.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Shepherd?
Lock in your campsite early and you'll thank yourself later. Lake Livingston State Park accepts reservations up to five months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and weekends from March through May and October through November fill quickly. Double Lake Recreation Area and other Sam Houston National Forest sites are bookable up to six months out on Recreation.gov. Private parks like On The Lake RV and Cabin Resort and Wolf Creek Park usually take reservations directly through their websites. Pro tip: if a popular holiday weekend (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) is sold out, check back often as cancellations open up regularly.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234271What are the driving conditions like around Shepherd, TX?
Driving an RV around Shepherd is genuinely relaxed compared to most of Texas. US-59/I-69 runs right through town with wide lanes and plenty of pull-offs, and the surrounding farm-to-market roads (FM 2025, FM 222, FM 945) are flat, lightly trafficked, and easy to navigate even in a 30-foot rig. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms from May through September (they can drop heavy rain fast), occasional deer crossings at dawn and dusk along forested stretches, and the bridge over the Trinity River on US-59 which can get gusty. Pro tip: avoid driving Houston's 610 Loop during rush hour if you're heading south, and stick to I-69 for the cleanest RV-friendly run into town.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at Shepherd-area campgrounds?
Campgrounds near Shepherd are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Lake Livingston State Park offers full hookups (electric, water, and sewer at select sites) plus a dump station, showers, and a swim beach. Double Lake Recreation Area has electric and water hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, and potable water (plan a dump stop at Lake Livingston State Park or a private park). Wolf Creek Park, On The Lake RV and Cabin Resort, and Browder's Marina all provide full hookups plus extras like boat ramps, fish-cleaning stations, and Wi-Fi at most sites. Pro tip: top off your freshwater tank before leaving any developed campground, as dispersed sites in Sam Houston National Forest have no water available.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234271What features and amenities come inside the RV rentals?
RVs on RVezy in the Shepherd area come well-stocked for comfortable Piney Woods camping. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 10 people (depending on size), a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; air conditioning (essential for East Texas summers); heating for cool winter nights; dinette or sofa seating with seatbelts for travel; and usually a TV. Many hosts include generators, outdoor speakers, awnings with LED lights, propane grills, and camp chairs. Wi-Fi hotspots are sometimes offered as add-ons. Cellular coverage around Lake Livingston is solid (Verizon and AT&T both work well), but expect spotty service deeper inside Sam Houston National Forest, so download maps and entertainment before you leave Shepherd.
fcc.gov/BroadbandData/MobileMaps/mobile-mapWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Shepherd RV rental?
Hosts in the Shepherd area offer plenty of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits with pots and dishes, generator use, bikes, kayaks or fishing gear, portable grills, outdoor mats, and pet packages. Delivery and setup, late pickup or early drop-off, and dump and refill services are common too. Pickup is usually scheduled in the afternoon and drop-off in the late morning, though many hosts are flexible. Mileage policies vary by host, with some travel trailer listings including unlimited miles within Texas. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during booking rather than asking later; hosts almost always offer better pricing upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Texas is handled securely through RVezy, never pay a host directly outside the platform. You pay the rental total through RVezy when you book, and the security deposit is placed as a hold (not a charge) shortly before your trip starts. Deposit amounts vary based on the RV's value and the protection plan you choose, and the hold is released after trip completion as long as the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues on your Shepherd trip, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's dumping and refueling instructions, and report any issues right away through the RVezy app.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle East Texas summer heat in an RV near Shepherd?
Summer in Shepherd is hot, with August daytime highs typically in the mid-90s and humidity that pushes the heat index higher, but a well-prepped RV makes it totally manageable. Choose a rig with strong, recently-serviced air conditioning (most Shepherd-area listings have rooftop AC plus dash air), park under the tall loblolly pines at Lake Livingston State Park or Double Lake for natural shade, and run the awning out by mid-morning. Drive early morning or evening when temps are coolest, hydrate constantly, and take advantage of the water: Lake Livingston's swim beaches and the cool waters of Double Lake are unbeatable for cooling off. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (March to May, October to November) are the smart-money move with mid-70s days and far fewer mosquitoes.
