Camping near Southmayd, Texas
Southmayd sits in Grayson County in north Texas, minutes from the southern shoreline of Lake Texoma, the reservoir formed by Denison Dam on the Red River at the Texas-Oklahoma border. The lake is the largest in capacity in the Tulsa District and one of the twelfth largest reservoirs in the United States, drawing close to six million visitors a year and ranking as one of the few reservoirs in the country where striped bass reproduce naturally. The area mixes federal campgrounds operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with commercial RV resorts and marina-based parks, so RV renters have a wide range of hookup levels, lake access, and amenities to choose from.
Close-in options for RV travelers include Lazy L RV Park, Texoma RV Oasis, Paradise on Lake Texoma - Resort Campground, Big Mineral Resort & Marina, and Lake Texoma RV Resort. Most sit on or near the Big Mineral Arm, the same shoreline that borders Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, with quick highway access back to Sherman, Denison, and the broader Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex about ninety minutes south.
Things to do around Southmayd
Lake Texoma is the main draw. Boating, swimming, water skiing, and striped bass fishing dominate the warm months, and the lake is one of the few reservoirs in the country where stripers reproduce naturally. Largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, hybrid stripers, white and black crappie, and channel and blue catfish round out the catch. Marinas around the lake rent pontoons, ski boats, and kayaks.
On land, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge covers 11,320 acres on the Big Mineral Arm and offers a Wildlife Drive along the lakeshore, five hiking trails, and a visitor center with exhibits overlooking Lake Texoma. Wintering bald eagles, snow geese, and ducks make cool-season visits worthwhile. The Cross Timbers Trail above the lake runs about fourteen miles through post and blackjack oak woodland for longer hikes.

Lake Texoma campgrounds run on a clear seasonal rhythm. Corps of Engineers parks generally operate at full capacity from spring through fall, with some loops and amenities such as showers and individual water hookups shut down during the winter months. Commercial resorts and marina campgrounds tend to stay open year-round, sometimes at reduced off-season rates.
Spring brings the heaviest rainfall and the highest lake levels, with May usually the wettest month. Severe thunderstorms and the occasional tornado warning are part of the spring pattern in north Texas, so RV renters should monitor weather radio and watch for low-water crossings. Summer is hot, humid, and busy: holiday weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book out well in advance, especially lakefront sites with full hookups. Fall offers the most stable weather, cooler nights, fewer crowds, and excellent striper fishing. Winter is mild by national standards but can deliver hard freezes and ice storms; bird watching at Hagerman peaks as geese, ducks, and bald eagles arrive.

Fantastic Trip! Highly Recommend! We just returned from a wonderful camping trip over the holiday, and we truly had a great time in this RV! It was the perfect home base for our family adventure. The RV was clean, comfortable, and exactly what we needed for a memorable getaway. We really appreciate how quickly the renter responded to our questions and the overall condition of the unit. How to book a campsite
Federal sites at Lake Texoma are reserved through Recreation.gov, the official booking platform for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The standard booking window opens six months ahead on a rolling daily basis, and prime summer weekends at lakefront sites often fill within minutes of release. Setting up an account and saving payment details before the release date is worthwhile.
Commercial parks such as Lazy L RV Park, Texoma RV Oasis, Paradise on Lake Texoma - Resort Campground, Big Mineral Resort & Marina, and Lake Texoma RV Resort handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends, bass tournaments, and the spring migration draw can sell out months ahead. RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type, slide-out clearance, and whether the park accepts rental rigs before booking.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of paved and gravel pads, with shaded sites under post oak and blackjack oak common across the area. Corps of Engineers campgrounds typically offer water and electric hookups, dump stations, vault or flush restrooms, and lake-access boat ramps; full sewer hookups are more often found at commercial resorts. Corps parks have entrance gates that open at 6 a.m. and lock at 10 p.m., and only one RV is allowed per site.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near Southmayd and Sherman but can thin out along the more remote arms of the lake. Bring insect repellent in warm months, watch for snakes in brushy areas, and plan for sun exposure on open lakefront sites. Firewood restrictions and burn bans are common during dry summer stretches, and visitors are encouraged to buy firewood locally rather than transport it in.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Southmayd, TX
How much does an RV rental in Southmayd, TX cost?
RV rental in Southmayd is reasonably priced compared to bigger Texas hubs. Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $295, and larger Class A rigs go from $250 to $425. Because Southmayd sits in rural Grayson County just minutes from Lake Texoma, owners often price competitively to attract Dallas-Fort Worth travelers heading north. For a cheap RV rental in Southmayd, book midweek and target shoulder months like March, April, or October. Pro tip: use the price filter on RVezy and message hosts about weekly discounts, many will offer 10 to 15 percent off five-plus night stays.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Southmayd%2C%20TexasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Southmayd, TX?
Good news: a regular Texas Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Southmayd, even for most Class A motorhomes (Texas only requires a non-commercial Class B for certain large single vehicles or combinations). No commercial license or RV endorsement is required for typical rentals. To book on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the platform so there are no surprises at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit. Most first-time renters tell us the paperwork side is the easiest part of the whole trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included in Southmayd, TX?
Yes, every RV rental in Southmayd booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head to Lake Texoma with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan provides meaningful financial protection for damage during your trip. If you get a flat on US-377 near the Lake Texoma bridge or your battery dies at Eisenhower State Park, one call gets help dispatched. That built-in safety net is a big reason first-time renters feel confident booking with RVezy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Southmayd RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide rather than host by host, and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, the refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because the policy is handled platform-wide, you won't see a separate cancellation policy on each listing. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. If plans change on your end, reach out to RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options for your Southmayd RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Southmayd, TX?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Southmayd is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see rigs whose owners welcome four-legged co-pilots. Lake Texoma is a fantastic dog destination too: Eisenhower State Park allows leashed pets on all trails including the scenic Cliff Loop, and the Army Corps day-use areas along the shoreline are pup-friendly. Some hosts charge a small cleaning fee of $25 to $75 per pet, which is always disclosed upfront. Pro tip: bring a long tie-out, summer ground temps in Grayson County can hit 100°F so plan walks early morning or near sunset along the cooler lakeshore.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/eisenhowerCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Southmayd is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you've never towed before. Many local hosts will deliver, level, hook up, and walk you through the rig at your campsite, whether that's Eisenhower State Park, Juniper Point, or a private lot near Lake Texoma. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location, with some offering free delivery within 20 miles. Just filter by Delivery on the listing page and message the host with your campsite number. You show up, the RV is ready, and your only job is to start the campfire.
swt.usace.army.mil/Locations/Tulsa-District-Lakes/Texas/Lake-Texoma/How far can I drive on an RV rental from Southmayd?
You've got plenty of road ahead, many hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night and several list RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. Southmayd's location 75 miles north of Dallas makes it a perfect launchpad: Lake Texoma's south shore is just 15 miles away, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is 20 miles east, Turner Falls Park in Oklahoma is about 90 miles north, Beavers Bend State Park is roughly 160 miles northeast, and Fort Worth's Stockyards are 100 miles south. Additional miles, when charged, typically cost $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: message hosts before booking, many will bump your nightly mileage up for a small flat fee on longer routes.
fws.gov/refuge/hagermanWhere are the best campgrounds near Southmayd, TX?
You're spoiled for choice, Southmayd sits at the doorstep of Lake Texoma's best campgrounds. Top picks include Eisenhower State Park (12 miles away, 95 sites with water/electric, some full hookup, and gorgeous bluff views), Juniper Point East and West (Army Corps of Engineers sites with 50-amp hookups right off US-377), Walnut Creek Marina near Gordonville (full hookups and lake access), Paradise on Lake Texoma in the Big Mineral Arm (a laid-back glamping vibe), and Thousand Trails Lake Texoma in Gordonville (300 acres with pools). Pro tip: Eisenhower's Elm Point and Armadillo Hill loops have the best sunset views, book those first.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/eisenhowerWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Southmayd?
Spring and fall are absolutely magical for RV camping in Southmayd. April through early June brings wildflowers, 70 to 85°F days, and prime striper fishing on Lake Texoma. Fall (mid-September through early November) is arguably even better: bug populations crash, days hover in the 70s, and the Cross Timbers Trail explodes with color. Summer (June to August) is hot, often 95 to 102°F, but campgrounds are lively and the lake stays at swim-ready temperatures into October. Winter is mild, with highs around 55°F and very few crowds, perfect for a quiet weekend. Pro tip: target the last two weeks of October for the sweet spot of warm water and cool nights.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never rented an RV before, how does the pickup work?
You're in great hands, first time renting an RV is what RVezy is built for. At pickup in Southmayd, your host gives you a hands-on walkthrough covering the basics: how to level the rig, hook up to water and 30/50-amp electric, dump tanks, run the propane stove, and operate the AC and awning. Most orientations run 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts encourage you to record video on your phone for reference. You'll exchange numbers so you can text if anything comes up at Eisenhower State Park or anywhere else on your route. Pro tip: ask your host to show you tank dumping twice, it's the only step most newbies forget.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/eisenhowerWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on FM-901 or a dead battery at Juniper Point is just a phone call away. The dispatcher can arrange a tow, tire change, jump start, lockout service, or fuel delivery directly to your location around Lake Texoma. Your host is also reachable by message and usually knows the nearest service shops in Sherman or Denison. For mechanical issues mid-trip, RVezy customer support helps coordinate repairs or, in rare cases, a replacement rig. Pro tip: snap a photo of your roadside assistance number at pickup and tape it inside a cabinet, it's the first thing you'll want if anything happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Southmayd RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Yes, an RV road trip from Southmayd into Oklahoma is one of the most popular routes since the Lake Texoma dam straddles the border just 20 minutes away. You can travel freely through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and beyond. Popular runs include Hot Springs National Park (about 5 hours east) and Carlsbad Caverns (about 10 hours west). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage stop at the US border. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval, so message before booking if that's part of your plan. Most hosts are happy to greenlight long cross-country adventures.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost near Southmayd?
Budgeting is straightforward, expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C rigs, and 15 to 20 MPG for campervans and tow setups around Southmayd. Most motorhomes here run on regular unleaded; some larger Class A rigs and diesel pushers take diesel. Gas in Grayson County typically sits 10 to 20 cents cheaper than Dallas prices, with stations in Sherman, Whitesboro, and Gainesville being your best fill-up stops. For a 4-day Lake Texoma loop covering 250 miles, plan on $90 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: the Buc-ee's in Denison (20 minutes south) has reliably low prices and easy big-rig access.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Lake Texoma?
Plan ahead and you'll lock in the best sites. For Texas state parks like Eisenhower, book through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system up to 5 months in advance, summer weekends and holiday weeks fill within hours of opening. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds (Juniper Point, Preston Bend, Dam Site) are bookable on Recreation.gov up to 6 months out and are gold for big-rig sites. Private resorts like Thousand Trails and Paradise on Lake Texoma can usually be grabbed 2 to 4 weeks out except on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday-Tuesday) almost always have openings, even in peak summer.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2984What are driving conditions like around Southmayd?
Driving here is genuinely easy, especially for first-timers. Southmayd sits on a mix of rural two-lane roads (US-377, SH-56) and easy four-lane stretches like US-75 connecting to Sherman and Denison. Terrain is gently rolling with no mountain grades, and there's almost no urban congestion until you reach the Dallas-Fort Worth metro about 75 miles south. A couple of local notes: the Willis Bridge on US-377 over Lake Texoma is a narrow two-lane crossing, so take it slow with a wide rig, and spring thunderstorms can bring strong crosswinds, so check the forecast before towing. Otherwise, expect calm rural driving with easy fuel stops in Sherman, Whitesboro, and Denison.
txdot.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Southmayd?
You'll be well taken care of, the best campgrounds near Southmayd offer a solid mix of hookups and conveniences. Eisenhower State Park has water, 30/50-amp electric, dump stations, hot showers, and a swim beach. Army Corps sites at Juniper Point provide 50-amp electric and water, with potable fill stations and a free dump station near the entrance. Walnut Creek and Big Mineral marinas add full hookups (sewer included) plus boat ramps. Thousand Trails Lake Texoma layers in pools, laundry, and a camp store. For dumping outside campgrounds, Love's Travel Stop in Denison has a public dump station. Pro tip: fill fresh water at your campground spigot before pulling into your site, hose lengths vary.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234074What's typically included inside the RV itself?
You'll find a fully equipped home on wheels. A motorhome rental in Southmayd on RVezy typically includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette beds, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof AC, furnace, hot water heater, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel. Most rigs include a TV, and many add an outdoor speaker, awning lights, and a Wi-Fi hotspot or Starlink (great for Lake Texoma coves with spotty cell service). Generators are common in Class A and C motorhomes for boondocking. Pro tip: ask your host about linens and the kitchen kit, many include sheets, towels, and basic cooking gear so you can pack light for your family RV trip from Southmayd.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts offer lots of ways to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for campervan rental Southmayd and motorhome bookings include bedding/linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and tables ($15 to $30), generators ($20 to $40 per day if not built-in), bike racks, fishing gear, and even kayaks (perfect for Lake Texoma's calm coves). Pickup is usually at the host's home in Southmayd or a nearby meet-up like a Sherman parking lot, and many offer delivery to Eisenhower State Park or Juniper Point for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras around $0.35 each. Just message the host to mix and match.
swt.usace.army.mil/Locations/Tulsa-District-Lakes/Texas/Lake-Texoma/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, with no hidden charges layered in later. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) is placed as a hold before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues on your RV rental in Texas, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return with the same fuel level, dump the tanks before returning, and stay under your mileage cap or arrange extra miles in advance. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick joint walkaround at drop-off so you both sign off on the same condition.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAny local insider tips for an RV trip from Southmayd?
Here's the local knowledge that takes your trip from good to great. First, hit the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge auto tour at sunrise, the 12-mile loop is RV-friendly and you'll spot pelicans, bald eagles in winter, and hundreds of deer. Second, the tiny town of Whitesboro (10 minutes from Southmayd) has Lovejoy's Steakhouse, a favorite stop before heading to the lake. Third, launch kayaks from Eisenhower's protected coves rather than the open lake, the south winds pick up by mid-afternoon. Fourth, the Red River Railroad Museum in Denison is a fun rainy-day backup. Finally, book your RV camping Southmayd weekend Sunday to Thursday to score better rates and quieter campsites. You're going to love it.
