Camping near Strawn, Texas
Strawn sits in Palo Pinto County in North-Central Texas, about 75 miles west of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex at the junction of I-20 and SH 16. The town is the closest community to Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, a 4,871-acre state park spanning Palo Pinto and Stephens counties and administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The park is the first new state park in North Texas in more than two decades, and it has reshaped the local camping landscape.
RV travelers typically base out of small private parks in and around town, including Cactus Rose RV Park and Solid Rock RV Park, or head to water-focused options like Lake Palo Pinto RV Park and Leon Reservoir Dam operated by the Eastland County Water Supply District. La Mancha Lake Ranch adds a ranch-style option for travelers who want acreage and privacy.
The terrain is classic Cross Timbers country: rolling ridges, oak and juniper woodland, and small reservoirs. Sites are generally open, with mixed shade and long sightlines that suit big rigs and towables alike.
Things to do near Strawn
The main draw at Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is more than 16 miles of multiuse trails for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, with about 1.25 miles rated accessible and all-terrain wheelchairs available. Tucker Lake, a 90-acre reservoir at the center of the park, provides drinking water for the City of Strawn, so motorboats are not allowed, but the accessible kayak and canoe launch, fishing pier, and fish-cleaning station support paddling and bank fishing. No fishing license is required within the park.
Lake Palo Pinto and Leon Reservoir round out the fishing and small-boat scene east and west of town. Wildlife viewing is a highlight: endangered golden-cheeked warblers nest in the oak and Ashe juniper stands in spring and summer, and migratory songbirds pass through in shoulder seasons. Strawn itself is known for its historic downtown and family-run steakhouse.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Texas. March through May brings wildflowers, active birdlife, and the wettest stretch of the year, with thunderstorms most common in April and May. Fall delivers mild days, cooler nights, and lower storm risk, and it is the sweet spot for hiking the Palo Pinto Mountains trail network.
Summer is hot. Daytime highs regularly push into the mid-90s Fahrenheit, and heat advisories are common in July and August. Shade is limited on newer pads at Palo Pinto Mountains, so full hookups with functioning A/C matter. Burn bans are frequently issued across Palo Pinto, Stephens, and Eastland counties during dry summer stretches; check county orders before arrival.
Winter is generally mild but can swing quickly. Freezes occur, occasional ice storms pass through, and wind is a year-round factor. Trails at the state park can close after heavy rain, so check the park alert page before booking a wet-season trip.
How to book a campsite near Strawn
Palo Pinto Mountains State Park uses the Texas State Parks reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. The park is at 100 Park Road 77, Strawn TX 76475. Reservations for standard sites can be made up to five months in advance from the current date, with the rolling window opening at 8:00 a.m. Central. Some categories, such as certain ADA and group sites, must be booked by phone, so confirm site details before locking in dates.
Private parks around Strawn, including Cactus Rose RV Park, Solid Rock RV Park, Lake Palo Pinto RV Park, and La Mancha Lake Ranch, book directly through their own phone lines or websites. Leon Reservoir campsites are managed by the Eastland County Water Supply District. Spring and fall weekends fill quickly; book several weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Palo Pinto Mountains State Park has 60 developed campsites: 25 RV sites with water and electric near Tucker Lake, 12 walk-in tent sites with water available and restrooms nearby, 13 backcountry sites reached by roughly a two-mile hike, and 10 equestrian sites with water, electric, an asphalt parking pad, and pens for unloading horses. Backcountry campers pack out everything they bring in.
The park is still finishing construction, so expect limited shade on new pads, cell coverage that fades away from the highway, and dark skies at night. Trails can close after heavy rain. Private parks around town lean simple: gravel pads, full hookups, laundry at some locations, and quick access to I-20.

Booking is low-risk. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. Cancellation terms are managed at the platform level rather than displayed on each listing. If your plans shift, contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options. Lock in your Strawn dates now and sort the rest later.

Bonus: Mary's Cafe in downtown Strawn has shaded outdoor seating where pups can hang while you tackle the legendary chicken-fried steak.

Yes, RV delivery Strawn travelers love is widely available, and it's the smartest move if you're new to towing or just want to skip the driving altogether. Many RVezy hosts will deliver the rig straight to Palo Pinto Mountains State Park (100 Park Road 77), Lake Palo Pinto RV Park, or even a private property in Mingus, Gordon, or Mineral Wells. They'll level it, connect water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it. Pro tip: book delivery early for spring weekends, since the state park has been booking out months in advance since opening March 1, 2026.

tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palo-pinto-mountains/fees-facilitiesWhen is the best time of year to visit Strawn in an RV?
Late March through May and October through early November are the sweet spots for an RV trip in Strawn. Spring highs sit comfortably in the 70s to mid-80s, wildflowers carpet the Cross Timbers, and Tucker Lake is perfect for paddling. Fall delivers crisp 65 to 80 degree days and beautiful oak color along the Russell Creek Overlook. Summer (June through August) is intense, with highs often in the mid-90s, so plan early-morning hikes and run the air conditioning on shore power. Winters are mild (highs in the 50s), making December and January great for budget-friendly stargazing trips when the park is quietest.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Strawn?
You'll be totally fine, first time renting an RV in the Strawn area is honestly a great place to learn. The roads in and out of town (I-20, US 180, and FM 2372 into Palo Pinto Mountains State Park) are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked compared to the DFW Metroplex. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slides, tanks, hookups, and braking. You can message them anytime during your trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is built into your booking. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller 20 to 25-foot travel trailer for your first run, they handle just like a big pickup truck.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Strawn?
Help is one call away. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the way to Possum Kingdom or a stubborn battery at Tucker Lake won't ruin your trip. One call dispatches a service tech directly to your location, whether you're on I-20, parked at Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, or boondocking near Thurber. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app to talk you through quick fixes (the generator pull-start, the propane switch, slide overrides). The nearest full-service RV repair and parts shops are in Mineral Wells (about 25 miles) and Stephenville (about 35 miles south).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Strawn rental on a longer road trip across Texas or into Oklahoma?
Yes, an RV road trip from Strawn across Texas state lines is welcome, and Oklahoma is just a few hours north. Popular routes from Strawn include the Hill Country loop (Strawn to Fredericksburg to Enchanted Rock, about 200 miles south), the Big Bend run (roughly 450 miles west via I-20), and the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma (200 miles north). Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. If you're planning a multi-state trip, just confirm mileage limits with your host through the listing page, many offer unlimited mileage or generous allowances for long hauls.
travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Mexico.htmlWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect?
Budgeting for fuel is easier than you'd think out here. A Class C motorhome averages 8 to 12 miles per gallon, a Class A gets 6 to 10 mpg, a campervan rental Strawn travelers love (Class B) gets 16 to 20 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer averages 9 to 13 mpg. Gas prices in Palo Pinto County typically run a few cents below the Texas average, and the closest fuel stops are in Strawn proper, Gordon (8 miles east on I-20), and Mineral Wells. A round-trip weekend from Fort Worth to Palo Pinto Mountains State Park and back is roughly 150 miles, so plan around $40 to $90 in fuel depending on the rig.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Strawn?
Book early and you're golden. Palo Pinto Mountains State Park opened March 1, 2026 as the first new state park in North Texas in over 25 years, and weekends have been booking out up to five months in advance through the Texas State Parks reservation system at TexasStateParks.reserveamerica.com. Reservations open up to 12 months ahead, so claim spring and fall weekends as soon as your dates are set. Lake Palo Pinto RV Park and private parks like Lake Mineral Wells fill faster on holiday weekends but usually have midweek openings within a week or two. Pro tip: weekday arrivals are wide open even during peak season.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palo-pinto-mountains/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are the local driving conditions like around Strawn?
Driving around Strawn is refreshingly low-stress. I-20 runs just south of town with wide shoulders and gentle grades, and the main route into Palo Pinto Mountains State Park (exit 361, then 3.5 miles north into Strawn, then west on FM 2372 for about 4 miles) is paved the whole way. The Cross Timbers terrain has some rolling hills and cuesta-shaped ridges, so use lower gears on descents in heavier rigs. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, especially along FM 2372 and US 180, and keep an eye on spring weather, severe thunderstorms and occasional hail roll through April and May. The North Texas tornado season peaks in late spring, so check the National Weather Service Fort Worth office before driving.
weather.gov/fwd/What hookups and amenities will I find at Strawn-area campgrounds?
Expect modern, well-equipped sites. Palo Pinto Mountains State Park offers 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer at concrete-pad RV sites, plus a dump station, accessible restrooms with showers, a fish-cleaning station, and an accessible kayak launch on Tucker Lake. Lake Palo Pinto RV Park has 20/30/50-amp full hookups, laundry, renovated showers, a camp store with ice and bait, and three large stone firepits. Most private parks around Mineral Wells have Wi-Fi, propane refill, and pull-through sites for bigger rigs. To dump and fill water on the road, the state park's dump station and the Pilot/Flying J in Weatherford (40 miles east on I-20) both work great.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palo-pinto-mountains/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat's actually inside an RV I'd rent in Strawn?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Strawn travelers book includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, three-burner propane stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, a furnace, and a TV with antenna. Most include a generator for boondocking, outdoor speakers, awnings with LED lights, and seatbelted passenger seats for travel. Travel trailers offer similar layouts minus the drivable cab. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the Palo Pinto Mountains (cell signal can be patchy in the canyons), so download maps and shows before you leave Fort Worth or Mineral Wells.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/wireless-connections-and-bill-shockWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Strawn rental?
You can really customize your trip. Popular RVezy add-ons in the Strawn area include camp chairs and outdoor mats ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, bikes, kayaks (handy for Tucker Lake), generators, and propane fills. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Strawn, Gordon, Mingus, Mineral Wells, or Stephenville, with mileage policies ranging from 100 to 150 free miles per day up to unlimited. Many hosts will meet you at Palo Pinto Mountains State Park directly. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book on RVezy to confirm a campervan rental Strawn weekend in seconds without waiting for host approval, perfect for last-minute planning.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palo-pinto-mountainsHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Strawn RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never cash or off-platform transfers, which keeps your booking and protection plan active. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment, and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid issues: take dated photos and a short video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with fuel and propane at the levels you received, and empty the black and gray tanks at the Palo Pinto Mountains dump station or your host's preferred site.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for first-time RV renters in Strawn?
Here's the move locals swear by: after a day on the trails at Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, drive 4 miles back into downtown Strawn for dinner at Mary's Cafe on TX-16, home of one of the most famous chicken-fried steaks in Texas (Texas Monthly has called it one of the best in the state for years). Park your rig along the wide main street, eat early to beat the cowboy crowd, then head back to Tucker Lake for a sunset paddle, motorless boats only, which keeps the water glass-calm. Add in a quick detour to the Thurber ghost town and the W.K. Gordon Center for Industrial History (10 miles south) and you've got a perfect family RV trip Strawn weekend.
